...What is sustainability? The ability to be sustained, supported, upheld, or confirmed. Environmental Science. the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance. Solar Energy The greatest advantages of solar energy are that it is completely free and is available in a limitless supply. Both of these factors provide a huge benefit to consumers and help reduce pollution. Replacing non-renewable energy with this type of energy is both environmentally and financially effective. Carbon Trading: * Market based system * Aimed at Green House Gases Climate Change: * Change in climate patterns * 20th century onwards * Increases the levels of carbon dioxide What is Earth summit? * 1992 it started * It is a united Nations conference where the powers of the world discuss how we can save our planet What is an eco-terrorist? * A group of environmentalists * They break laws for a higher cause What is the Global commons? * Earths unknowns space * Eg. Atmosphere, space and Antarctica What is Global warming? * Rising temperature * Rise in carbon dioxide and pollution What is Greenhouse Gas? * A gas in the atmosphere * Traps heat in the atmosphere and makes the Earth warm * This contributes to global warming What is the Kyoto Protocol? * International Treaty * Based on the premise that Global warming exists and that Co2...

... Ozone Depletion The atmospheric issues that we are facing are now becoming more of a major problem now more than ever. The biggest major issue I believe we are facing is ozone depletion and it is depleting at an alarming rate. We now have major holes where the ozone molecules have been ripped to shreds by chlorine and bromine. (National Geographic) The biggest ozone hole is over the Antarctic which has been getting bigger since the mid 80’s. The biggest contributor of producing these deadly chemicals, are the industrialists that use aerosol sprays that contain the chemical chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s). The government has recently within the last 16 years started to face this on- going problem and banned CFC’s from being used. This reduced the percentage rate of the chemical chlorine but experts still say it will take another 50 years for that chemical to balance itself back out. Even so the damage has already been done and the ozone molecules will not heal which means our earth’s protective layer will never be rebuilt. All we can do now is do everything we can to save what protective layer we have left, by reducing the amounts of the chemicals used to kill our ozone layer dramatically. The problems that ozone depletion is causing, is deadly radiation which causes cataracts and skin cancer, which is on the rise as well. It not only hurting humans though, it is also Affecting animals and the food chain as well. For example...

My purpose to write this is to show people some ideas that can be sustainable. When reading this essay think about some reasons of your own to make a building more sustainable. The idea of this essay is to talk about benefits of solar panels, greenhouses, and finally wind mills. Solar Panels “When the solar energy from the sun it gets trapped and stored and can be used in in various ways to generate power. Solar energy can be used as direct or indirect, active or passive. The two main ways that solar panel work is solar...

...Examine the claim that our environment is ruined by greed. As societies begin to transform and people in many parts of the world grow in affluence, many start to view the pursuit of material goods as a worthy goal. Consumers of today have ever-changing preferences in all aspects and are almost never content with what they possess currently, always searching for another more technologically advanced gadget, or more fashionable handbag. People's desires for more are seemingly insatiable. Wants are more than often deemed as needs and this habit of man can only mean trouble for our environment. The more we crave for what is beyond necessity, the more our environment is degraded to quench our thirst. The production of our "needs" devours the Earth's fast depleting resources and emits large amounts of pollutants, further wrecking our fragile environment. Yes, it is true that our environment is being ruined by mankind's greed. However, sometimes greed can actually be a force of good. Man has an innate desire for more, be it individuals who seek to improve their standard of living, or firms who seek to increase their profits. Firstly, as people get more wealthy, they want to purchase more goods and seek material comforts. This creates a generation of people who often buy goods they have absolutely no need for and throw away goods they view as outdated, even if these goods still work perfectly and serve their function well. An example would be the recent launch of Apple's latest...

...Macklin Begaye English 111 Final Draft Renewable Energy With a growing population around the world, the need for energy is grows as well. In modern society, we use electrical energy for multiple tasks such as operating vehicle, machines, for everyday uses. Every year the electrical energy needed requires mass amounts for such purposes. Which is created in power plants, for example, the Hoover Dam. Scientists continue to look for alternative sources to quench our thirst for more power. Renewable energy is a great example of what scientists are striving for to help quench the thirst. It is a natural resource that can also be naturally replenished. Renewable energy is the best solution for energy consumption, to ensure our survival. Renewable energy is the most reliable resource due to that it provides benefits globally and to human individuals. It helps maintain our energy infrastructure, well as provides long-term benefits. It helps combat global warming and other problems associated with fossil fuels. The environmental quality and preservation is the goal of the use of renewable energy. Renewable energy should be considered throughout the world because of the potential impact we may have on the environment. Renewable energy sources are very beneficial to the earth and it atmosphere. Many cities are struggling with obscenely unclean air, so causes unhealthy living environment for people to live in (Craddock, D, 2008). Fossil fuels are one of the main reasons behind...

...distinguish their work from the ‘traditional, paining-on-the-wall’ view of art. Explore this view in relation to how audiences can experience these works. “My work starts with the basic premise that in order to communicate an idea and create maximum empathy with an audience the work has to be authentic”-Rod McRae. Rod McRae is a children’s book author and illustrator, taxidermist, designer, photographer and sculptor, and a dedicated artist and educator. McRae has exhibited his work around the world, with exhibitions in Australia, Italy, Japan, Spain and Czechoslovakia. McRae is deeply concerned with issues surrounding human activity and its effect on the natural world. Through his latest work, ‘The Tent of Wonders’ for Sculpture by the Sea in Bondi, McRae pursues an emotional connection with his audience to convey issues about biodiversity, hunting, pollution, colonisation, ownership and climate change through the use of non-traditional taxidermy specimens as the principal medium. The Tent of Wonders covers 180m2 under canvas and contains 16 installations. The work is offered in easy to understand portions with an element of humour to enhance the accessibility of the work. Through the use of real animals McRae is able to create a more interactive and confronting work as opposed to making sculptures out of bronze, metal or clay. McRae believes that if you want to get people to save an animal species you have to show them the real animal; and only by recognising the skin and bone, the fur...

...Calculating Ecological Footprints A major reason Bangladesh has a relatively small ecological footprint is that it is a mainly agricultural and fishing nation of generally low income people (Bangladesh.) Thus they consume basically what they can grow and catch. With low income they have little import and export and do not affect the world ecological system as much as nations who have large import and export, such as the United States. The United States on the other hand has a large footprint because it is an industrial country with a high level of income, with the higher level of income there is a much greater demand for goods from other countries. The U.S. is the world’s largest importer and the third largest exporter (World’s 10) having a tremendous impact just in those factors alone. Importing goods means we are affecting other parts of the world by consuming the resources of that particular area. Also, since we are consuming more goods, we also affect the pollution of not only the originating areas but our own, we generate more waste and this waste affects our soil and air. Since we are a country of wealth and power we need to use it to help save our planet for ourselves and future generations, by setting and implementing standards in sustainability. Based on the data in the table, average per capita income does affect ecological footprints but the major factor according to Global Footprint Network, is the nation’s consumption based on adding or subtracting imports and exports...

...us towards our advantage. Planet earth’s resources, one way or another, are used to support the creation of these inventions. We must come together to conserve our resources, the resources that are vital for human existence. Individuals are creating alternative ways to everyday life that directly influence our impact on Mother Nature; these developments are subject areas for green technology. To learn about green technology we first have to understand what it means to be green and the terminology of technology. When a co-worker come to you and says, “I am going green”, more often than not, they are not talking about the color green. They are referring to their decision to become eco-friendly. The second part we must try to understand the meaning of technology. The “Business Dictionary,” defines technology as, “The purposeful application of information in the design, production, and utilization of goods and services, and in the organization of human activities” (Business Dictionary, 2013). When combined these two entities lead to the creation of eco-friendly designs, products, services, and organizations. Numerous amounts of new technology are becoming readily available, while older technology is being revamped. Subject areas of green technology include: energy, green building, environmentally preferred purchasing, green chemistry, and green nanotechnology (Green Technology, 2006). These areas taking tiny steps in the right direction, they are reducing our footprint...

...The society we live in today is depleting our water resources in a way that it is hard to restore the damage. Out of all the states in the U.S., California is in an extreme drought right now and it could get worse than it already is. There are a lot of inconsiderate people out there that waste gallons of water on unnecessary things that are contributing to the drought. Therefore, it is time that people are informed on how to take appropriate action towards not wasting valuable water. Water is an important substance for the everyday necessities for both human beings and animals. It is used for drinking, washing, and irrigating plants. In one single word, water is used for everything. There isn’t a single thing we do that does not require us to have contact with water. In this paper I demonstrate that water conservation is important because we are in a severe drought, and show that taking shorter showers, watering the lawn every other week, and fixing leakages can reduce water usage....

...Call for Change By: Nicole Hurley Our trash has become a growing problem not only for our environment, but for our economy as well. In America in one day, a single person creates 4.6 pounds of trash, which is more than any other country in the world. Only 1.5 pounds of this trash is recycled per person per day. This totals out to us having created 251 million tons of trash in America in one year, and we have only recycled 81 million tons of it. These statistics need to change, and one way we can do this is with mandatory recycling. Mandatory recycling can produce many different benefits, such as improving the economic development of the United States, saving the American family valued dollars, saving our natural resources, and sustaining the environment for future generations. By converting waste into valuable products, recycling creates jobs and adds significant value to the U.S. economy. Recycling is a big industry, and in 2000 it employed over 1.1 million people and provided an annual payroll of $37 billion. This was a great help to our country’s job creation and economic development. Statistics from the National Recycling Coalition show that incinerating 10,000 tons of waste creates one job and land filling 10,000 tons of waste creates six jobs, but the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) shows that recycling 10,000 tons of waste creates 36 jobs (City of Fort Collins, 2008). More job openings would increase the productivity of our economy because people would be making...

...Our society is being forced to deal with uneducated, illiterate high school graduates. You may ask how are high school graduates so ill prepared for the world. Have you ever been to a store where a young employee, maybe a high school student is the sales associate and the register shuts down right before you receive your change? Did you notice the look of panic on their face because they were not sure how much change you were supposed to receive? It is because of the national crisis, social promotion that can be accredited to this dependency on everything except their educated brain’s. We as educated people must help find a way to save our children from wasting their academic careers due to social promotion. "Truly embracing the idea that all children can learn and making sure that all children do, requires that we all take responsibility for ending social promotion." (www.ed.gov) If we accept and aim to prove that all people are capable of learning life’s basic necessities we will start breaking down the wall of stupidity that social promotion has built. "More than half of teachers surveyed in a recent poll stated that they had promoted unprepared students in the last school year, often because they see no alternative." (www.ed.gov) If a teacher sees no option for a student other than failing or socially promoting them, the teacher generally promotes them, because it goes over easier with in society and authority. This is essentially depleting the educational standards...

...Oceans Introduction Recent studies found that overfishing in the ocean is depleting sea life around the world. Overfishing in the oceans is taking the sea life at a rate too high that the fished sea life is having a hard time replenishing itself. Part 1 Overfishing started in the early 1800’s when humans started seeking blubber for oil lamps. When humans started overfishing for blubber it drastically reduced the whole population. The fish population like the Atlantic cod, herring and sardines were fished to the point it was almost extinct by the mid 1900’s. The disruption of the food chain became catastrophic by the late 20th century. Large commercial fishing ships in today’s industry are equipped with aggressive state of the art sonars to find schools of fish fast and accurately. Some of the large commercial ships have powerful engines that can drag really big fishing equipment through the ocean, so fish really don’t have a chance to escape. There is a type of fishing that is blamed for unnecessary damage to the bottom of the ocean called bottom trawling. Marine scientist compare bottom trawling to a bulldozer, except it has nets that collect turtles, coral and everything that is in its path. It causes irreversible damage to the coral reefs, slow growing fish species and even kills the sea turtles. Part 2 Solutions that we can do to help prevent over fishing in the oceans are, for one to change our eating habits. We don’t have to stop eating fish but if we were to replace...

...terms, the key principal of sustainability is to support, endure, perpetuate and supply the necessities of life on earth without depleting resources at a rate in which they cannot replenish themselves, crossing any thresholds or boundaries potential harmful the existence of life or destroy ecosystems that are important to animal and plant life on earth. These principals can also be applied to the life we lead as business owners, manager and other working professionals. In this paper I will be discussing what the key principals and meaning of sustainability as it applies to general terms and in a business context. Sustainable business or green business is an enterprise that has no negative impact on the global or local environment, community, society, or economy. The organization participates in environmentally friendly activities that ensure all processes, products and manufacturing activities adequately address current environmental concerns while maintaining a profit. In other words, it is a business that “meets the needs of the present world without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs. Exemplary examples of a green business are the efforts of Nike and Adidas. They developed a new way of dyeing clothes with CO2 instead of water. The process is a potentially revolutionary technique that they say could save time, energy, and billions of gallons of H2O each year. The previous water-based dyeing process uses several chemicals added in...
