A disability is a condition that limits ones full ability to complete a task be it a physical condition, or a mental condition. In 2010 there was a report done by Mathew W. Brault titled ‘Americans with Disabilities,’ he came out that approximately 19% of working Americans had a disability. That is very overwhelming statistics which means that 1 in every 5 American’s who work have a handicap. At the same time this shows how the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990) has taken massive strides in the right direction. In the report he went thru all the possibilities. He went from the nonsevere to the severe. To some non-disable people a disability is just a disturbance in their daily lives, but to others it can be a way to help someone less fortunate. I will be discussing how Human Resource Management plays a vital role to people with daily physical challenges cope and excel in the work field, whether it be a cashier at CVS to the CEO of a fortune 500 company. I will explain how the ADA has helped HR deal with people who are less fortunate to become respected and given an opportunity to make it in any given company.
The ADA is the Americans with Disabilities Act. It was amended in 1990. Senator Tom Harkin was the main push behind it, reason being that he had a brother who was deaf and had a hard time getting a job. The act was established in order to decrease the discrimination of people with disabilities in employment, transportation and any other possible places of work. The ADA is enforced by many other federal departments some being the FCC and the Dept. of Transportation. The act goes on to explain how a company has the obligation to meet the needs for people who can’t live a normal life for example a company must have a well maintained elevator or ramps in order to accommodate those with an issue.
I personally feel this is a very important topic. There
