...solution? In this course ( HUM/111- Critical and Creative Thinking) will help you. Since I started this course in December 2012, nine weeks ago this course has helped me become a critical thinker. I have learned what is critical thinking, I can tell you the most significant things I learned about critical thinking and how my critical thinking has changed since this course, and I can reevaluate my stage of development in critical thinking, explain to you why this change has occurred, and how I plan to move from stage five: Advanced thinking to stage 6: Master Thinking. First week we learned, what is critical thinking? Critical thinking is a mental process of reviewing clear, rational thoughts based on evidence to reach an answer or conclusion. Critical thinking helps you distinguish between fact and opinion, ask questions, make detailed observations, uncover assumptions and define their terms and make assertions based on sound logic and solid evidence. Next thing, I can tell you the most significant things I have learned about critical thinking and how my critical thinking has changed since this course. The most significant things that I have learned about critical thinking, that critical thinking is based on concepts and principles, not on hard and fast, or step- by- step procedures. Critical thinking does not assure that one will reach either the truth or correct conclusions. Critical thinking is hard intellectual work. Critical thinking is an intellectual skill that...

...Creative Thinking Name HUM/111 April 28, 2013 Yasmeen Thomas Creative Thinking Of all the political issues present in our country today, the issue of Gay Marriage is one that everyone has an opinion on. There are very few people who will ever say, “I have no opinion.” They may not want to express their opinion, but everyone will have an opinion on this topic. The Gay Marriage debate is explosive because it touches several hot buttons: religion, civil rights, homosexuality, homophobia, race and hatred. In order to properly address this issue we have to consider all sides of the issue. Not just the issue itself, but how each side feels about the issue. We have to ask if their opinions are valid or emotional. We have to ascertain whether their feelings are based on universal truths or religious fervor. By considering all sides we may come up with multiple solutions. We can also put ourselves in the opponent’s shoes and try to argue against ourselves so we can see what the other side sees. We can also take the position of an onlooker to judge the situation impartially. In a topic like this there is rarely one solution. More likely, it will be a series of imaginative compromises that will ultimately take place. As Alfred North Whitehead warned, “Fools act on imagination without knowledge; pedants act on knowledge without imagination.” Living creative means combining knowledge and imagination (Vincent Ryan Ruggiero, 2012). In order to bring groups together...

...Creative thinking. Hum/111 1/26/2014 • How might you use the strategies for applying creativity to problems and issues in addressing this topic? Addressing this topic there is several ways a person can go about using creativity in order to help solve problems or any issues that could come up. Creative thinking is helpful for way that people can answer questions that might come up from reading an article. For a reporter it up to the reporter to make sure every angle possible is looked at and have answers for any issues that may arise from the article. The topic of Obamacare creates so many things to consider for most people, such as, if a person is for it or against it. Whether a person thinks it will work or if Obamacare is even a good idea. While writing, maintaining neutrality is important and might require a great deal of creativity, such as, taking the topic and making it interesting enough to readers to read what you have to say as well learn things from what the reporter has written. • How might you use the strategies for promoting curiosity in addressing this topic? Why do you think these strategies might be effective? The original article is conceptual conflict. The Obamacare website remained unstable throughout the New Year, the pace of enrollment, and what the new law entails, as well Rommeycare coming out in Massachusetts. For more added strategies to promote curiosity, a writer could provide more exploration into the subject. A writer could provide more...

...Critical and Creative Thinking Hum / 111 Version 5 To Drill or not to Drill By: Kelly Dray Date: 09/11/2012 Teacher: Cindy Carbajal I would have to say that when it comes to the situation of oil and expressing my own opinion that I think drilling be a better choice of opinion. There are several options and choices that may or may not be best of for the interest of Drilling or not. The States create many and plenty of way’s, choices, ideas, and solutions to use or pick from, and the way it seems to follow it does include the information many from the outside source such as the public would like to suggest in their opinion or word of ideas to help improve the oil and it make the resources easier and better. That in my opinion would be away to reduce the cost of gas. The oil has fallen so far below and then again and has gone back up in its cost and it has caused the prices to increase over time. Obama talks on how he prefers to work with using the idea of going green, but in my opinion of choice it will cost a lot of money for the states needs and the item to repair the windmills. Drilling I say be4 better we then will not have to depend on other states and be independent for ourselves when it came to drilling oil. Just to imagine the cost of one damage windmill is what and where...

...Saturday, May 19th 2012 Hum/111 – Instructor K. Moore Week 9 Assignment: Personal Reflection Paper Critical thinking is when you use logical thinking process to evaluate things such as decisions, readings and much more. Critical thinking is developed as a person ages and the brain is introduced to critical thinking skills in order to effectively form the final tool of critical thinking. It may not be used as much if a person doesn’t employ the skills that they have been taught. How critical thinking differs from the usual thinking is the fact that there is depth. The three most significant things that I learned about critical thinking during this class are that it aides’ creative thinking, helps you better analyze things and it impacts the decisions you make. Creative thinking is aided by critical thinking because it assists in the thinking department and helps get the juices flowing when it comes to creating ideas because you have to evaluate them to see if they are worthy. Analyzing a situation wouldn’t be the same if you didn’t have critical thinking to help. When analyzing an idea or decision, critical thinking helps you answer those what, when, why and how questions that require an answer. Critical thinking impacts the decisions you make because if you don’t think critically you may find yourself in a whirlwind of confusion and frustration. When you are using critical thinking you will either get a positive result or a negative result. If you get a positive result...

...Questioning and Investigation HUM-111 4-14-14 Dana Greiner Questioning and Investigation As we live through this world full of wonder, solving problems and resolving issues we look back and contemplate on the work or ideas that we had. That contemplation is most likely of a critiquing nature. We use critical thinking as a form of evaluating the solutions or ideas that we had so in the future we could learn from our mistakes and work on them to make them better with less faults. As any problem can simply pop up at any given time, it is important to know about all of the phases of critical thinking including questioning and investigation. If there was a problem such as the developing of illness going around in a new suburban community, I would have to think critically with what I have learned in order to solve it. The first step is to express the problem in order to avoid having assumptions towards it. Assumptions can be easily made as a result of thinking that the problem is self-evident (Ruggiero, p. 125, 2012). Early on we had to avoid the assumption that this would be a problem due to genetics. One way to express the problem is: How can the development planning and execution of the community can be improved in order to produce better health for the community? After the problem has been properly expressed, is now time to think of the questions that would need to be answered. Mostly the types of questions that need to be asked are going to be factual data and no opinion...

...Detecting Media Bias Bobbi Secrist HUM/111 Critical and Creative Thinking Kathy Kildow The first article that I came across when I did a search for national politics was one done by fox news, but since I have a bias against fox news I decided not to go with that one because I was not sure I could remain objective. The reason for my bias against them is that they have a reputation for having a particular political bias and I didn’t want that opinion to hinder my review of the article. Instead I have chosen to go with an article from The New York Times politics page entitled “9 Swing States, Critical to Presidential Race, Are Mixed Lot”. The reporting was clear and concise with plenty of depth and insight about the nine swing states for the presidential race: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. While the story did not consider alternative perspectives or worldviews it did report some very interesting facts without making assumptions. All political implications of which candidate could get the swing states were emphasized and I don’t feel that anything was ignored, but I do feel that the writer showed a little bit of disrespect to our president. Before President Obama I have never seen a president referred to as “Mr. Obama” or simply “Obama” but that is almost always the case with this president and I feel that does show a certain amount of bias. It is important to make distinctions when undertaking a critical...

...Media Bias assignment Week 3 HUM/111 06/10/2012 GORSHA GALBRAITH Making critical evaluation is essential to understanding the underlying facts from media. The Travyon Martin & George Zimmerman case was well known issue in today’s society. Many news stations displayed Travyon depicted as an innocent boy and Zimmerman as a ruthless individual. The media facts were concerned with the entertainment and not the facts; it seemed like each news station was investigating the truth of story, but promoting Zimmerman as a prejudice blood thirsty killer. The Media used bias to depict each individual Travyon and Zimmerman, depending on the news station the media can make anyone seem like the villain in child’s story, the question to ask one’s self is this fair? There have been so many inaccurate information in the new media who can keep track of the assumption and misleading information; some of the information cannot place the role of Zimmerman in the event of the shooting. I believing reading between the lines in any media story or reading a book is essential, if the person and media don’t gather enough Intel it the new article or information is invalid cannot live up as facts, but most individuals don’t read between the media words of facts, not everything is the truth, the truth is whatever sound reasonable in the sake of inaccuracies errors, or bias statement in the media. Long story short, the media will entertain, post valid Intel from time to time, but not all the Intel from...

...Off Shore Drilling Jessica Couture HUM/111 CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING 1/29/2012 Tracie Comer Off shore drilling Our country has been getting foreign oil from other countries for as long as I can remember. The U.S relies so much upon Canada, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela and Mexico for our sources of Net Crude Oil and Petroleum Product Imports. My personal belief is that we should not continue off shore drilling. I think it’s time the U.S doesn’t rely on other countries for our oil. Off shore drilling is a bad idea because it’s the worst impacts of global warming; we need to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy within the next 10 years. The billions of dollars that would be spent on offshore oil drilling just postpone the inevitable transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Renewable energy is available now, so it’s time to walk away from fossil fuels and toward a clean energy future. We burn 25% of the world's oil here in the U.S., but we have only 3% of the world's oil reserves. So even if all offshore oil magically came to market today, the vast majority of our oil would continue to be imported, and we wouldn't see price relief at the pump. The reason why I think the way I do about the situation is because offshore drilling poses serious threats to wildlife and natural habitats. I have always been an animal lover and I adore the ocean sea life. For example in the Gulf of Mexico, an explosion on an oil rig operated by the petroleum company...

...Problem-Solving Process: Part I HUM/111 March 30, 2014 Pam Strunk Problem-Solving Process: Part I The situation in my life what I have chosen to use for is assignment is my sons weight. This is something his father and I have weekly discussions about. The problem is my son is overweight for his age and height and we want him to be a healthier weight. The issue is that his father believes he does not eat a healthy diet and I disagree with this. His father only sees and spends time with our son every other weekend and assumes that the diet I feed him is full of fast food and candy. I spend every day with my son and almost the 2 days every other weekend that he is with his father and know that he does eat a healthy diet that I prepare for him. The way that I distinguish what is a problem and what is an issue in this situation is by thinking about the main thing we both agree on and what we disagree on to some extent. In this situation the main thing we both agree on is that my son could be at a healthier weight, this is the problem. Something we disagree on to some extent is weather my son is eating a healthy diet, this is the issue. Another way is to ask myself the following questions to determine whether it was a problem or an issue. If the answers to these questions are yes then the subject is an issue and not a problem. If not, then it is a problem and not an issue. Does the subject arouse...

...Detecting Media Bias HUM/111 Critical and Creative Thinking February 9, 2014 The article I chose for my critical evaluation was in the Seattle Times, published December 4, 2013, titled “Call for $15 Minimum Wage Moves North to Seattle”. While all parties mentioned in the article agreed on 1) The minimum wage in Seattle does not cover the cost of living, and 2) The city’s minimum wage does need to be addressed. They do not agree on the details like how quickly to move on it and how to put it into place. The article was accurate in the information that was reported, but some information was ignored. For example; Will an employee who is making $15 today ($5.81 more than the current minimum wage) be forced to take, what would essentially be, a pay cut or would that person have their salary raised to match that of the $15 minimum wage co-worker? Another point only showing one side of the issue, the mayor, talking about phasing in the new wage, was quoted as saying, “[starting with] city workers and extending to employees of national fast-food chains and retailers”. Another side of this would be the fairness issue to the employees that aren’t affected by for years, while the minimum wage is phased in, or at all, if some businesses are exempt. A person could not afford to continue living in Seattle if they could never reach the imposed $15 minimum wage. The news article did not cover alternative views such as, local and surrounding area business owners and...
