Many have noted that there are community members, who are all suffering from like symptoms. This clearly is linked to the environment surrounding the community. After personal research I have discovered the reason for these symptoms is because of a reckless gas company and their poor and lenient policies. When a gas company is not forced to maintain strict standards and government safety regulations, they are likely to release chemical run-offs onto the land which are absorbed by the soil and into the water supplies. Likewise, chemicals can be released into the air and cause additional pollution. Community members can absorb the harmful chemicals through their drinking water or through breathing the air around them which will cause members to become very ill and possibly die. When I sought this information I made sure that I had questions in mind as well as credible sources from which to receive my information. By speaking with experts on the harmful effects of chemicals, I was able to obtain the best factual information. If certain gas companies lack concern for the pollution they cause then they should not be allowed to build additional plants near communities. Introduction To whom it may concern, I am writing this to inform all residents living in or around Bayside that we have had many of our residents become ill with similar extensive symptoms. We have been doing thorough research to get down to the bottom of the problem, and have narrowed the illness down to a possible improper chemical disposal at a nearby company. We are doing everything in our legal power to get this unfortunate matter taken care of. II. Diagnosis The first thing I would do would be to contact those residents whom I know have been contracted with the illness, and ask them questions related to, where were they at the on-set of the illness? How long have they had said symptoms? Did anyone who may have been with them get sick as well? Were they exposed to anything unusual that may have gotten them sick? I would ask many questions that could help me get to the cause of the problem. a. Symptoms Here I would keep a book and log every symptom from every person I interviewed. This would allow me to find a possible pattern in related symptoms. I would also document ages and genders of residents who got the illness, so to see if there is a difference in children versus adult symptoms. b. My primary aim is to explore the use and functions of the passive voice in English, examining the reasons which motivate an author to prefer the passive form to the active one. Secondary interest is devoted to the function and the use of the passive voice in Czech. As research material I have chosen the short stories by the American writer O. Henry and their Czech translations by Stanislav Klíma. The reasons why I have chosen the genre of a short story are that it is noted for the unity of time, place and action. I believe that due to this fact, the results of my research will give higher evidence of the use of the passive voice since the basis for comparison is unified and compact contrary to, for example, a novel. For the same reason of evidence, I explore just the translations of one translator, since everyone has his/her personal style and different way of thinking and understanding of original text. I am interested in the issue of information packaging, especially in the different ways of expressing one and the same reality in the two languages: when both active and passive versions are formally permitted, what factors favour the choice of one over other?
