...When talking about my history as a writer, I always think of my big change in writing between the time when I lived in Vietnam and when I came to America. When I was in my country, Vietnam, writing is my favorite thing to do when I went to school there. At that time, I really liked to write journals, poetries, short stories and even novels. However, when I moved to America for four and half year ago. I started to hate writing. I don’t feel confident to write anymore. It’s probably because of the language. I tried to learn how to write in English when I move to America, but it was so hard for me at that time. I remember the first time when I wrote an essay in English, it took me two days to write a short paragraph. The big problem is I didn’t have enough words to write, and my huge mistake is that I always thought in my own language, then tried to translate to English, which was the slowest way to learn in writing. That habit changed when my professors kept telling me to think in English during writing time instead of thinking about Vietnamese, and that helped me a lot in writing. I’m a narrative writing person. I love creating different characters and telling stories about my characters. When I was in middle school, I used to write a lot of actions...

...Love a girl who writes because she will be able to recall in detail the dialog between you two, and while it gets you in trouble, it's endearing and sweet at the same time that she remembers. This also forces you to choose your words carefully and you will become an expert in diction. Love a girl who writes because she understands the complexities of characters, and knows you are more than your successes, failures, winnings, or losses. She loves all the layers of you, all the deep parts and even the shallow. When you are acting like the villain, she will see the goodness in you. When you are the hero, she'll still secretly admire your flaws. All the depths of you become her big adventure. Love a girl who writes because she will give you the most beautiful settings you've ever seen. She writes about the paradises she imagines, the paradises she has been to, and shares them with you. Love a girl who writes because sometimes a little silence is welcome. Love a girl who writes because the post-it on your refrigerator reminding you to buy milk will be original and full of adorable metaphors. And because she is so creative, she'll put the post-it in your shoe rather than on your fridge. In the fairy tale that is your life together, she will always make you prince charming, and happily ever after is a guarantee. Love a girl who writes because when the poetry dies, she will make sure her prose keeps you alive. Love a girl who writes because she understands the value of word choice...

...family. After memorizing the Koran when he was a teenager, he began to practice mysticism and to write poetry in his early 20s. It is estimated that he wrote somewhere around 5,000 poems, each of them divinely inspired, before he died in 1389. Of these five thousand poems, only 500-700 have survived, and there is some doubt as to whether or not all the poems ascribed to him are authentic. The majority of his work is thought to have been destroyed by the religious and political authorities of the time who were threatened by the ideologies of Hafiz. Regardless of this, his poetry remained hugely influential, with his Divan, or collected works, becoming a classic part of Sufi literature. People who find themselves in need of guidance will often use his poetry as an oracle, a practice that began shortly after his death and continues to be used today. They will use randomly selected couplets or poems to find wisdom and make important decisions. It is perhaps fitting that Hafiz’s greatest impact would be on Sufism, the very thing which greatly influenced his own life and work. Sufism is the “belief and practice in which Muslims seek to find the truth of divine love and knowledge through direct personal experience of God. It consists of a variety of mystical paths that are designed to ascertain the nature of humanity and of God and to facilitate the experience of the presence of divine love and wisdom in...

...Critical Thinking Reading and writing are things that I am very well at. The difference is, I’m stronger in my writing skills than my reading skills. The reason for this is that when I’m writing I get so into my words and imagination to where my hand with the magical pencil does the talking. My skills in reading only depend on one thing, if it catches my attention or not. Stories have to get me involved with the story somehow in order for me to get interest. If it’s not catching my attention, I’m not reading it. But most importantly, critical thinking is what ties reading and writing together. I am very picky about the books and articles I read. Stories for me have to have a mystery or even sometimes a sappy love story. Of course I’m going to love romantic books because I’m a girl, right? Yet again, some love stories bore the living hell out of me because it’s a “typical” love story. Reading books just all depends on how the author grabs his reader’s attention and how he plays the story throughout the book. When I find a book that I’m interested in, I will read the entire novel. Or even something that is scary will keep hooked on the story. Scary stories are my favorites because the story just keeps my suspense in play. Celebrity gossip is definitely something that I get into reading. There is always something new with these celebrities. Since these celebrities are well known, their lives are somehow interesting to us. We love the celebrity gossip because they’re famous and...

...Myself in Writing Certain people don’t like to write and others can’t get enough of it. Personally, I swing both ways about writing. I enjoy being able to express my feelings down and share them with others, not all the time because there are some things I like to keep to myself. I love the idea of letting my ideas and thoughts stream out and come to the surface. Reading other people’s stories or thoughts inspires me to be free and write down how I feel. Sometimes it’s hard to express the feelings I get and how to incorporate them into words for others to comprehend, but I guess that’s the reason. To have others approach your feelings and figure out the emotions they capture through your piece of literature. Now, the part I dislike about writing is having to follow structure and regulations. I do understand why there are building blocks to literacy writing, I just don’t feel you get to allow yourself to come out of your shell as much. For example, me, I am writing this essay allowing myself to express what I feel and about my writing history, but it’s going by some guidelines of the class. The font, margins, and the minimum length of the essay are just the beginning of them. In high school I remember we had to write about how we felt about a book that was assigned in class, but we had to have a thesis statement, a full-circle ending, and it had to be 3 pages long. I did enjoy reading the book, the analysis behind the words and writing what we got out of the book. It...

...This is me, as I take a breath, staring at my keyboard, trying to rack my brain on what I should write. Who am I, three simple words to a complex question that I am still trying to solve. There is something about the fact of writing something “heartfelt and true and meaningful” about myself, that is much more scarier when you have to go to class the next day and face the people who read your writing. So, here I am trying to face the fear of others reading my work. Fair warning all of it’s just a mixed of complex thought and the effort of me scrabbling for words to use. Like many, I started writing because of my love for reading. I love when I would spend all day and night reading because I was so developed into the story. Though it might sound...

A compliment, an affection or a quick “Hello, You are being thought of” via text can spark anyone’s day. E-cards are fast, and convenient. There are many sites that allow you to send them for free. You can find any type of sentiment from cute and funny, to serious and romantic or teasingly sexy. The bonus is that you can include a personal message along with it if you’d like. Hold hands, hug and give quick kisses often. Nothing is as good for the soul and the emotional health of a person as the human touch. Why not keep that sense of youth no matter how old we are or how long we have been have together as a couple? Holding hands keeps a connection and closeness, no matter what we are doing. ...pictures, and telling stories about love. With this theme a lot of poets around the world wrote a huge amount of poems and stories. I chose to analyze a couple of Robert Browning’s poems and Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s, his wife. Robert Browning was born on May 7, 1812 in Camberwell, England. He was the eldest child of Sarah Wiedemann and Robert Browning, a wealthy clerk who was also a collector of books; his gigantic library was a great source of study for young Robert. Both his parents encouraged him to study and write, and he did start to write poetry at the age of twelve. In 1846 Robert Browning married fellow English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861). They were devoted to each other, “for after their marriage they were never separated,” writes their son in his introduction to The Letters of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Vol. 1 (of 2) 1845-1846. After they settled down in Italy and Elizabeth’s health began to get better she went on to write many highly acclaimed works. The few works Browning produced in the next fifteen years including Christmas Eve and Easter Day (1850), and Men and Women, which he dedicated to his wife Elizabeth (1855). (Merriman) I have selected two poems “Meeting at Night” and “Parting at Morning” by Robert Browning and one poem, “How Do I Love Thee?” written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The main theme in these poems is this amazing feeling which we often like to describe as love. The poem, “Meeting at...

...A Sinful Society An act regarded as a serious or regrettable fault, offense, or omission defines a sin. Ayn Rand’s novel, Anthem describes the journey of Equality 7-2521 who retaliates against his collective and communist government. The idea of individualism does not correlate in a communist society that Equality lives in. However, he harms nobody within his society. Freedom and individualism should not be considered sins. Equality commits a sin when he discovers new ideas, commits multiple transgressions of preferences, and writes his actions down in his journal. Equality creates his own ideas and inventions and begins to realize how to become an individual within himself. He works alone in a tunnel he discovers for three hours each day and working alone defines a sin in their society. Ironically, with the name of Equality, he does not believe that everybody should be equal to one another. He believes this when he ponders, “The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them” (Rand, 52). Equality gathers items from the streets and other houses and takes them down to the secret tunnel continuously. He continues to do so due to the lack of yearning from all of his brothers to explore and discover. International discovered the tunnel with Equality but he did not want to return due to the consequences that would occur if they were caught. After he escapes the community and the Uncharted Forest, he discovers a house with his soon to be wife...

...At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very basic posts on facebook expressing one’s opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit discussing topics I find intriguing. Perhaps it’s the severe senioritis that has overcome me as I enter my last semester at Chapman University. As I’ve gotten lazier I can see it start to reflect in my everyday life. Deep down I still love to read but I rarely find myself getting truly invested into the action unless it relates to something I am very passionate about. My passion for reading began back as second and third grader in Elementary school. One thing I remember is I always got excited when the teachers would pass out the booklets advertising all the scholastic books you could choose from for that month. I would be very meticulous in my process of picking books based on the pictures and description as I only wanted to get ones I thought were best. There was no better feeling walking into class and seeing the piles of books at the front of the room. I would sometimes sneak a peek to see which kid had the biggest stack for that month. Once I got my books I would treat the books with the utmost care, as if they were precious treasure. And to me that’s really what they were, my...

...The hate side of my relationship with writing stems from school. This is because most of the writing assessments dont allow me to have creative freedom. 9 times out of 10 we have to write about something like why we love school (we don't) or sometime you had to do something specific that you can't remember ever doing. And then when you get to write something that has a plot instead of a 5 paragraph essay about why school shouldn't be start earlier, you have to write from a prompt that sounds like something you would find in a children's story contest. I understand why we are given prompts, i just wish we could have more creativity with them instead of writing with a specific prompt. That is why i partly hate writing. The love side of my...
