...Introduction Through the graduate courses at Iowa State University, I have strengthened my understanding of literate environments that foster reading and writing by integrating foundational knowledge, instructional practices, approaches and methods, curriculum materials, and the appropriate use of assessments. Attached is a PowerPoint presentation and it illustrates a literate environment and the importance of creating an environment that fosters reading and writing. Artifact Summary Analyzing My Learning About Literate Environments My graduate coursework at Iowa State has prepared me for creating a literate environment. As a literacy coach it is important to know the importance of creating a literate environment as well as be best practices for fostering reading and writing in a classroom. Additionally, my new understanding of literate environments has allowed for ensuring that literacy integrates foundational knowledge, instructional practices, approaches and methods, curriculum materials, and the appropriate use of assessments....

...AED/202 Reading and Writing Development Sandy Mackey June 28, 2013 Kristen Weiss Reading and Writing Development As a future educator I believe that reading and writing is the utmost import thing in a child’s education. Without these two skills a child will not be able to succeed in school. For my essay, I chose two age groups that I want to teach; middle childhood, ages six through ten, and early adolescence, ages ten through 14. The reason I chose these two developmental ages is because I believe that children enjoy learning; they are like sponges, always trying to absorb as much as possible. The reading development in middle childhood children and early adolescent childhood children seem somewhat different. Middle childhood children start by identifying letters and matching letters with individual sounds, knowing what a word is, and interpreting spaces and punctuation are the earliest building blocks for reading skills (www.education.com). Early adolescent childhood children, usually do not have an issue with reading; they can identify vocabulary words in a book and sound out the words. Children of this stage usually enjoy reading. Writing skills for both middle and early adolescent children develop in the same way as their reading skills. Middle childhood children are more focused on what they are writing, their spelling, spacing, punctuation, and coherence has improved (www.education.com). As for the early adolescent children...

...The course Reading and Writing across the curriculum was expectedly an eye opener for me. As per usual with courses taught by Dr. Saul and Mrs. Rock, I expected to be involved in activities which showed the importance of reading and writing across all subject matter in the curriculum. My first thoughts of reading and writing were that it was linked exclusively to Language Arts but this course has shown the importance of reading and writing throughout the curriculum. The first topic that intrigued me was Chall’s Stages of Reading Development. These six (6) stages show step by step the process of reading development a child undertakes straight up to adulthood. By having an understanding of these stages and the characteristics that children portray in each, a teacher can effectively cater to the needs of the children. For example, in the first stage, the Pre-Reading Stage, aged six (6) months to (6) years, children garner information via being read to by an adult, who responds to and warmly appreciates the child’s interest in books and reading and via play with books, pencils, paper and blocks. This stage creates a foundation for reading and writing as children identify letters and understand words they hear even though they can read few if any at all. Teachers or adults can let children choose books of interest and read them to them consistently to aid in retention of knowledge. Knowledge of Chall’s Stages of Reading Development is also immensely useful when dealing with children...

...standards for this? And how do we know which definition is the correct one if everyone will debate the term because of their different views on it. The readings helped a lot because they served as a base for my argument. Brandt is more interested in the way people view the different aspects of literacy rather than arguing the standards she would set for the term. Young and Kendall also impacted my arguments because they see literacy in a rhetoric way speaking about the importance it carries and the ambiguity it possesses as well. As hard and complex as it was for me to begin this paper, I decided to speak of literacy as a process in everyone’s life. Starting from reading and writing and ending with our employers who are most likely the ones who will be setting the standards for our literacy level. As I read, I saw that the paper wasn’t flowing smoothly and I tried focusing on transitions from one idea to another as I went on to my final draft. As I see literacy as a process that is constantly evolving and flowing through out education and our lives, I thought that my paper should also be a flowing process that allows one idea to follow another in a smooth, yet very detailed way. To conclude, I learnt a lot from this unit. I learnt that with my own experiences, much focus, and good cited quotes, I can form a strong argument that emphasizes my perspective as to what it is to be “literate”. To Become Literate: The Process For a while now I’ve been thinking about the term literacy...

...Ep Reflection During the different processes of making the essay, I felt that it was easier to make the final written essay as we had already made our points and found our quotes. If we had forgotten different events in the novel we could look at our reading log which helped tremendously as we were reading other novels at the same time. These steps helped me stay on track as I would have procrastinated and finished my essay a day or two before the due date. When writing the essay I found that it was easier and quicker as we had already found the quotes and had all our ideas written down. The steps were put into a good order and helped me focus on a topic. At some points I felt rushed as some of the steps were due a few days after we were given...

...humanity with other world citizens as they retain and value their prominent and separate identities. Students can afford the opportunity to confront new ideas and different points of views in classroom, all the while increasing their abilities to discuss and defend their own positions both in discussions and in writing. In my composition class this translates into an interactive, group-oriented classroom that focuses in equal amounts on the three components of critical thinking, reading, and writing. “It is now generally conceded that the art of thinking critically is a major missing link in education today, and that effective communication and problem-solving skills, as well as mastery of content, require critical thinking. It is also generally recognized that the ability to think critically becomes more and more important to success in life as the pace of change continues to accelerate and as complexity and interdependence continue to intensify. It is also generally conceded that some major changes in instruction will have to take place to shift the overarching.” (Paul, 2013). I could emphasize peer workshops, group work, and the use of student essays as reading material in...

...1301-36420 17 July 2015 Traumatized by a Reading and Writing Experience As a kid, most of my early childhood memories about learning to read and write were traumatizing for me. I went through most of my school days disliking reading and writing. I was not extremely confident in my ability to perform and keep up with my peers. I felt like I could not do anything right. One school morning I recollect, it was my first day as a third grader. In a class, all I could smell was crayons and glue as I sat in my desk. Then I hear my teacher calling my name in a classroom activity to read aloud. I took a deep breath and began to read, then realized I could not pronounce must of the words in the book. I was pausing unnecessarily and stuttering out the words. The passage was small but seems like hours had passed as I read slowly. My palms were sweating and my voice was cracking. The students were laughing softly and huffing and puffing, expressing how impatient they were with me. My teacher did nothing to control the students. I finished reading then I put my head down quickly and cried. I was awfully emotional and felt worthless. I was consequently embarrassed and felt humiliated. This teacher was the worst ever I thought to myself. I don't think she knew how to handle this type of a problem. My teacher sent a note home to my parents telling them that I need tutoring for reading. I took the letter home to my parents to read and sign. I felt like my parent would take up for me. Instead...

...business, or marriage. However, there is another type of foundation, which can serve as a ground for advanced education, and this is the foundation of reading and writing. Everyone knows the importance of reading and writing for a college education. Since a student has to do a lot of reading in all the courses, he needs strong vocabulary and reading skills. In addition, great writing skills are primordial to succeed in college and everyday life. In this class (ENGWR 42), I have done a lot of activities to perform my writing and reading skills such as writing reading responses, writing summaries and responses for articles, and learning to write an essay, and I hope all of those skills will be necessary for the next English class....

...Log Section 1 - Two reflective entries Reflective entry 1: New Beginnings Deciding to attend university as a mature age student was a decision I did not take lightly. I am working towards furthering my education in order to gain the necessary qualifications that will help me in my future business endeavour. I have found that after so long out of the education system it has been a difficult transition juggling study and work. The first units that were chosen for me in study period 2, I thought were difficult to understand having never written an essay before and without the knowledge or know how, I was not able to complete these units. SSK12 has given me a good understanding of what it takes at becoming a university student and in particular the skills on writing essays. As I have mentioned previously up until study period 2, I had never written an essay and did not fully comprehend how important the set out of a university essay was. Choosing an Essay Question was an important part of my learning in week 6 because this has now given me the beginning step in writing a university essay using the correct format. I am feeling a lot more confident when approaching the subject of essays as I now understand and have the knowledge on the procedure in completing an academic essay and what is required. I now know that by firstly choosing a question will then help you to with your thesis and this in turn will give you your main idea and sets the way in which to write...

...UNIV103-1104B-276 My Foundations Labs lets you evaluate your academic foundational skill set so you can self-motivate to enhance your strengths and strengthen your weak areas. We completed sections in Math, Reading and Writing in My Foundations Lab. I completed assignments in Math, Reading and Writing sections of My Foundations Lab. I started off by first doing the Reading section of the assignment first. I chose this section first since I thought it would be my stronger section. I then went on to the writing section and then last did the math section since I thought this would be my toughest section. I really enjoyed completing these assignments in the My Foundations Lab. It gave me a sense of where I was and what I needed to work on and really was a big refresher for me. I like the process it takes of letting you complete the work then identifying your weak spots then creating additional work to focus on your weak areas. My strengths were in the reading section of the course and my weakness was in the writing section. I was really surprised by the results. I thought that the math section would be my weak point. I am planning on retaking the writing section of this course to try and better myself and also complete the learning path modules. I think by doing this it will make me a stronger writer and help me with my career. I might have gotten distracted during that section and want to retry. For the Learning Path Modules I completed Writing Module: Basic Grammar...

...The focus of my lesson was to help students better produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. I read to both students, Student A and Student B the book “A Fine, Fine, School”. Afterwards the students and I discussed the importance of organizing a story in an appropriate order, that way it is easier for the attended audience to understand. Later, I would have both students create their own stories. To support my students learning, I opened up the lesson with a discussion. We talked about the organizational traits a story may have and how we as authors can do that. Once I started reading the story “A Fine, Fine School”, I would periodically stop and think out loud about the organizational traits presented in the book. After reading the story, we had another group discussion on what types of strategies the author used to organize the story and the importance of this writing technique. Following our discussion, I had students give a brief descriptions about what they like to do when they are not in spending their time in school. After we brain stormed, I had students create a short story using transitional statements that also helped keep their story organized. We then discussed why using...

...This English class required me to focus on four different learning outcomes: writing, reading, researching, and reflecting. The writing learning outcome included creating an effective and flexible writing process to evaluate various rhetorical situations. The reading learning outcome included reading complex sources from a variety of Medias to also evaluate rhetorical situations. The researching learning outcome included searching for print and electronic sources and imply their information to ideas and integrate them into the writing projects. The reflecting learning outcome required me to look back at previous works and decide what changes can be made and how future works will be improved. This English course successfully improved my...

...The information learned in English 111 will have a major impact in my life. This class was created to teach students how to write properly and understand different genres of writing and to emphasize the importance of writing. As numerous of us continue our educational paths, it will be critical to understand the fundamentals of writing, and I am positive this class will be a great stepping stone. Through the course’s heavy focus on annotation, writing, and analyzation, I hope to learn new information that can act as a stepping stone for my career path. My intentions for this class is to learn the valuable tools of writing and reading, not receiving an A. English 111 is a class focused heavily on writing, so I expect to learn different formats of writing such as essays and articles and how to write them properly. In order to achieve a full, detailed understanding of different writing techniques, it is essential for students to be exposed to a variety of texts. I expect the class to be assigned different forms of writings to achieve a better understanding of different types of texts. As we read our assigned passages, many of us will portray words and ideas that differ from each other. Because of our different backgrounds...

...myself way before I entered BC 12, I would laugh at myself for I thought this wasn’t really important but turned out it helped me more in terms of my grammars. I remember that before I took up this subject I never really knew all the processes of reading. There are so many more different prospective or ideas on reading than I thought. I never imagined the number of research studies that have been done on reading. After reading these studies, I was able to find ways to determine areas of weaknesses of my reading comprehension and then I was able to correct them one by one. The development of reading is a far bigger concept than I thought, it widens the readers’ perspective about reading and imagination while going through words. What I learned after about a month or so about this study is that it can be helpful in many ways. I feel like I have a better understanding on how the reading process really works. I did not realize how complex learning to read really was. It helped me a lot in communicating with other people in English. While taking this subject, I have learned and improved some of my grammatical errors and punctuation mistakes back in high school, though I’m still not that great in writing which this paper explains I am a bit better now than before. Essays, reading comprehension, writing short stories, or writing reflection papers. These are just the things that we might tackle during the semester and these are also the things that we do almost every day...
