...time academic career and you have the makings for a real disaster. How do we find a good balance in order to have the happy and satisfied life that we desire? There is a quote I heard once that says “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something”. I have always remembered that, I believe it was on television around the time hurricane Katrina hit. Although it was referring to volunteering but I think it applies to life too. Maybe we can’t do it all on our own, after all God didn’t put Adam here alone, he gave him a companion, Eve, and they worked together to raise a family and work and learn. I would like to start off by discussing our work life. Although a person might want to climb high on the corporate ladder, one should not neglect the other important aspects of his life. Do you often find yourself missing out on sleep, not exercising, eating unhealthily, drinking or smoking too much, or otherwise neglecting your body for the sake of work? Do your friends and family members complain about you spending too much time at work? If you are nodding along to some of these, you might be a workaholic. If you focus all of your effort on your work you may not only be missing out on your children’s growth and life experiences, but your relationship with your spouse can suffer as well as your relationships with your friends and other family members. Many people use the idea of “I want to be able to give my children opportunities I did not have” only to find their children...

...1. Backers of the B-2 bomber have argued that it would be wasteful for Congress to stop their manufacture because so much has already been spent to develop the B-2. Advise Congress on how to deal with this argument. Answer: This is the case of huge fixed cost involved in production, so the argument goes like this, if they will stop manufacturing, there will be a huge loss for them including the total fixed cost and sunk cost, which cannot be recovered. I would suggest them to check there total revenue and their total variable cost, if the firm is able to cover its total variable cost and even a small portion of fixed cost, it would be better to run the business. On the other hand if firm is not even able to cover its total variable cost also, it would be wise to shut down the business, because the loss would be equal to the total fixed cost and more in running the business. 2.On a recent trip to Chicago I had an opportunity to eat at the Berghoff Café. This famous restaurant was founded in 1898 by Herman Joseph Berghoff and was still run by the Berghoff family. We entered the restaurant at 3:10 P.M. were escorted to a table and presented with a menu which said, "Saturday Luncheon Menu." Apparently dinner begins at 4:00 P.M. at the Berghoff. Thinking that the prices were lower than I had remembered for past dinners at the Berghoff, I requested a Saturday dinner menu and compared some prices with the following result. The luncheon menu had prices for Sauerbraten, Weiner $chnitzel...

...a misunderstanding you experienced when communicating with someone else at work, home, or school. Then fill in the blanks of the chart below. Who was the sender? Me Who was the receiver? My wife What was the message? “why didn’t you make dinner?” What channel was used to send the message? Text message What was the misunderstanding that occurred? I texted my wife a question, “whats for dinner tonight”? Her response was, “Nothing”. I texted back, “why didn’t you make dinner?” She took this as my jumping on her, and that I was upset. I meant the question more as a ‘what happened today, are you ok’ question knowing she must have been too busy to make dinner, and just wanting to know how her day went. How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? I could have called her instead of texting. So many times true meaning gets lost in text. What did you learn about the communication process from this activity? I learned that words are often the words purveyors of truth What seemed to be the main causes of the misunderstandings? The words I asked texted her seemed to her to be in an upset way, so immediately her defenses went up. Instead of calling and asking her where she would hear my tone and that it wasnt upset, she took my meaning as upset, and that made her upset because she was already stressed out from her long day. Assignment 1.1: Communication Process Model Directions: Think of a misunderstanding you experienced when communicating...

...No Turkey for Thanksgiving “What do you mean we aren’t having turkey for Thanksgiving?” My family has become set in our ways when it comes to the food menus for holidays. You could say my family has created folkways for our holiday meals governing the “when and what to eat” -- concept. Folkways are defined by Joan Ferrante, as norms that apply to the mundane aspects or details of daily life (Ferrante 50). My family has developed many folkways around the holidays, so much so that if anyone tries to change them up it disrupts the norm of the holiday for us. The traditional family does everything by the book as far as preparing holiday meals but sometimes changes up the menu. In my family, we are so set in our way that if something is missing, it can cause drama and make for grumpy family members. My family has developed many folkways that are centered on the foods we eat for certain holiday meals, such as 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The typical 4th of July meal that my family prepares is barbequed hamburgers, hot dogs, potato and/or pasta salads, chips, dips, and fruit, usually cantaloupe and watermelon. Thanksgiving dinner consists of turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy and all the other traditional Thanksgiving dishes. Christmas dinner is usually prime rib, baked potatoes, salad and all things that go along with a prime rib dinner. Our most traditional Christmas meal is prime rib, and it would be really strange if that was not on...

...cultural differences. Although both have labeled their situation as “embarrassing”, it is clear that both situations are coming from two different aspects. The story Sisters Flowers depicts educational differences, whereas Fish Cheeks describes a young lady facing the embarrassment of pride and cultural differences. According to our text book, the idea of descriptive writing is the kind of writing that describes person, place or thing in such a way that is forms a picture in the readers head. In order for one to capture such an event one would have to pay close attention to each detail by using their five senses. As I read the story of Sister Flowers, I felt as though this story definitely follows the guidelines of a good descriptive story. For example: Sisters Flower by Maya Angelou discloses a revelation of an important mentor in the life of Marguerite. The character, Sister Flowers, is painted as an individual who was kind, respectful, educated, and inspirational. She was an aristocratic and highly cultivated person who had the ability to reach out and bring forth a positive impact on the lives of those that resided in her community. Marguerite was a young girl who was trapped in her own shell and had a hard time speaking to, so much, that her mother thought that Sister Flowers could assist with breaking her out of this structure. Mrs. Flowers begun to gain unbelievable control over Marguerite and over a period of time, Marguerite would considered Sister Flowers to having...

...something I knew I would have to learn to do at some point. Being able to observe different cultures without judgment is a very hard task to accomplish, especially when you are someone like me who has an opinion about everything. It was a challenge for me to learn that I had to be able to look at someone or something that is different than what believe and accept it for what it is or isn’t. I had a hard time, in the beginning, not judging the people I observed or worked with throughout this experience. One of the hardest times I had with not judging people was when I was in the nursing home. Being around elderly people is tough to begin with, but working with them in a setting that they do not want to be in is even more difficult. I worked in the nursing home over a period of time during the weekends. I would do different activities each time I was there, and I worked among many different types of people. Some of my favorite days were the days that I would get to sit with the elderly women and paint their fingernails. They loved having all the attention on them. I never realized how unloved they felt because of the fact that they were in a nursing home. These women would tell me stories of their childhoods, their families, and things they wanted to do at that time. It was incredible how all of these women craved attention. I also loved being able to act as a granddaughter to these elderly men and women because many of them either did not have grandchildren,...

...Tissue time!!! BEING A MOTHER... After 32 years of marriage, I asked my husband to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. I said, 'I love you, but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you.' The other woman that I wanted my husband to visit was my MOTHER, who has been alone for 40 years, and not been taken out by a man in a long time. Living in another state makes it impossible to visit her like it should be. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. 'What's wrong, aren't you well,' she asked? My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. 'I thought it would be pleasant to take you out to dinner,' I responded. 'Just for you.' She thought about it for a moment, and then said, ‘I would like that very much.' That Friday after work, as he drove over to pick her up he was a bit nervous. When he arrived at her house, he noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about their date. She waited in the door. She had a new wig on and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last birthday on February 18th. She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel’s. 'I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son-in-law, and they were impressed,' she said, as she got into that new white van. 'They can't wait to hear about our date'. They went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was...

It looks EXACTLY like a killer's house. Resume. “Welcome,” Rellik said as he invited them in. Pause. RELLIK? Everyone knows that's killer spelled backward. ...that came from the era during the Prohibition and the many speakeasy people would attend. Just like the speakeasy, underground restaurants are strictly word of mouth and never advertised in public. Even though the guests of the underground events enjoy the experience of the elegant dinner they are served, the health department is another story. The health department and other officials worry of the guests who are attending because the ventures are unlicensed, the cooks could lack food-handling education and also have no idea about the fire code. The disadvantages of owning an underground restaurant would be the fact that the health inspector could find out of the business and close the place down if the right steps are not taken. Chefs would need to be hired who know about the health code along with the servers and others who will be handling the food. For the safety of my company, I would have the whole business include the venue up to code and cancel out as much risk as possible, not only for the business but also for the safety of the guest. Another disadvantage is making a profit from the underground restaurant. Most just charge the guest the amount that is needed to buy the ingredients for the dinner and leave the rest to the customer to tip because of the underground business not claiming taxes. Tamara Reynolds even made a point in the article that she just charges $25 a head for the dinners and she has the guest put the money in a cash box so if someone from government...

...Over the years I have developed a distaste for the spectacle of joie de vivre, the knack of knowing how to live. Not that I disapprove of all hearty enjoyment of life. A flushed sense of happiness can overtake a person anywhere, and one is no more to blame for it than the Asiatic flu or a sudden benevolent change in the weather (which is often joy's immediate cause). No, what rankles me is the stylization of this private condition into a bullying social ritual. The French, who have elevated the picnic to their highest civilized rite, are probably most responsible for promoting this smugly upbeat, flaunting style. It took the French genius for formalizing the informal to bring sticky sacramental sanctity to the baguette, wine and cheese. A pure image of sleeveless joie de vivre Sundays can also be found in Renoir's paintings. Weekend satyrs dance and wink; leisure takes on a bohemian stripe. A decent writer, Henry Miller, caught the French malady and ran back to tell us of pissoirs in the Paris streets (why this should have impressed him so, I've never figured out). But if you want a double dose of joie de vivre, you need to consult a later, hence more stylized version of the French myth of pagan happiness: those Family of Man photographs of endlessly kissing lovers, snapped by Doisneau and Boubat, not to mention Cartier-Bresson's icon of the proud tyke carrying bottles of wine. If CartierBresson and his disciples are excellent photographers for all that, it is...

...Personal Action Plan Comm/315 March 14, 2016 Personal Action Plan Intro I would consider myself to be in the middle class, not upper middle class nor lower middle class. My husband and I live comfortably he is Active Duty Army and I work in an office setting getting paid decent money. We are able to buy things we want and not only things we need. When it comes to outings and restaurants we usually pick something the average person would choose; Olive Garden, Chilis, Apple Bee’s, a restaurant in that nature. Nothing extraordinary nor fancy. We go out to a nicer dinner on special occasions but it is not an every weekend thing, because we simply cannot afford dinner that cost $60+ per person on a regular basis. I have decided to observe people in the upper class at an expensive restaurant, my paper will cover observations that I have made, what I have learned, and how my experience has helped me feel more comfortable, and socially conscious. Observations; Comfort level My husband and I decided we would go out to a more expensive dinner so I can make some observations. We decided to go to an upper scale restaurant in Washington Dc, Fogo De Chao. It is a Brazilian steakhouse, where they serve an all you can eat amount of different types of meats. We took a seat at a table where there was a candle in the center of the table they serve your drink in a wine glass they have white cloth napkins perfectly folded on the table. The age group here ranged from mid to late 20’s to...

...No-No If you picked up this book because of difficulties in your own relationship, then your simple act indicates two important things about you. First, it signifies that you’re feeling some pain. I’m not talking about the obviously physical, just-cut-your-finger kind of pain. I’m talking about the kind of pain that hurts somewhere in your spirit. But even though your pain is spiritual, it can still be described in physical terms. If your relationship is in acute crisis, then the pain may feel sharp and piercing. Or if your frustration is chronic, then the pain may feel like a dull ache or perhaps an empty, hungry kind of sensation. Another possibility is a stifling, suffocating kind of feeling. You may associate it with your chest, your heart, the pit of your stomach, the back of your neck or even your head. But wherever you feel it, whether it’s subtle or intense, you’re still feeling some form of pain. You may also have the disturbing sense that your life wasn’t supposed to turn out this way. You started this marriage with dreams that you hoped your relationship would fulfill. You wanted love, respect, and a soul-mate with whom you could share life’s experiences. You not only wanted to be nurtured, but you wanted to be appreciated for being the loving person you always knew you could be. You wanted the opportunity to let your love unfold, and now you fear that the opportunity is passing you by. The second thing indicated by your picking up this book is that you still harbor...

...Eight hours doesn’t seem like a long time. However wearing earplugs, simulating a life with no hearing, surely can an ear opening eight-hour experience. When first being assigned this assignment, I could not help myself but to laugh. The thought of going through a normal day wearing small, bright yellow earplugs seemed humorous to me. Looking back now, that brief eight hours allowed me to step into the shoes of someone who can’t control their hearing. When deciding when to partake, I didn’t want to participate on a day when I would miss a class lecture or a day I had to babysit. So the appropriate day was narrowed down rather quickly. Friday it was. I had no classes but enough scenarios where I could get a proper trial. I had a simple day, filled with a trip to the mall and grabbing dinner with friends. Having warned my friends of the assignment ahead of time they found it just as funny. Upon my first confrontation with them, and with the earplugs in, they were full of questions; “Can you hear anything?” and “How about now?” gradually raising their voices. I found myself in the passenger seat, turning my body eagerly to figure out who was talking so I could read their lips and answer their questions. Being secluded in the car with just four of us, music off, I grasped how vital our visual system is, especially for...
