The Importance of Immunizations

...For years children have been immunized against dozens of infectious diseases. Routine shots starting at birth protect them from illnesses such as polio, measles and hepatitis. In recent years, since the outcry that too many immunizations, too early may cause autism, many parents have decided against immunizing their children. In this debate that has continued for years, non-vaccinating parents believe that by forcing them to vaccinate or not allowing them to go to school is a violation of the child’s human rights. But vaccinating parents believe that by other parents choosing not to vaccinate they are trampling on the rights of others and putting them at a greater risk of contracting diseases. The way vaccines work is by creating immunity to diseases by injecting a small amount of a weakened germ into a body where it attacks it as if it were a real virus. The body begins to build antibodies to the germ; and later when the body is attacked by the same, or a similar germ, the body remembers it and is able to protect the body from another infection (Elana Pearl Ben-Joseph, 2010). Though vaccines carry risks, refusing vaccinations puts others at risk as well, and the dangers of not vaccinating are far more hazardous than those caused from vaccinating. Churches, Public Opinions, and Advocacy Groups are just three of the community structures that can influence the public health and a parent’s opinion to vaccinate. Many parents choose not to vaccinate due to religious or cultural...

...researching with a couple ideas in my mind. I decided to base all my research on Immunizations because I really think I can deliver a good paper on this subject. I have wanted to dig into the controversy about immunizations for a while now. The main reason is that my wife was not immunized and it was a strong desire of hers that her kids are not immunized. I was immunized and always thought I would immunize my children. I think this subject for me would be extremely beneficial to learn more about. There have been numerous claims of immunizations causing autism, and other serious medical conditions. Are theses claims all hype or are they truth? This is what I intend to learn for myself. In the early 1900's we as a people started with one vaccine against small pox. To vaccinate fully in today's society it means 48 vaccines in the first 6 years of your child's life. That is a lot of vaccines compared to twenty years ago, but is it worth the risk? I am the father of two small children and the idea of something happening to them on my watch scares me to death. For me to take them to the doctor and have an immunization give them brain damage or worse is just not a scenario that I would be able to cope with. The flipside however is that immunizations are there so that when a virus like polio or whooping cough goes viral the child that has had the immunizations are much safer. The research question is, Are Immunizations worth the risk? There is so much information on this subject and I am very...

Finding Inner Peace

...love yourself 100%. Though this sounds easy, its not when you have a society that has made an image of what they consider a perfect male or perfect female. God has made every human on this earth have distintive features. And in his eyes they are all beautiful. If you are one who deals with self esteam issues, every morning look yourself in the mirror and say God does not make mistakes. Our first and last love is self love. The second step is accept what it is. There is only so much that we have control over. If we are presented with a situation that we can not change or affect then just let it be. "It is what it is" is something i like to say. For example say your going to be late for work becasue there is traffic and there is only one route to your job, instead of getting stressed out about being late for work understand that you can not physically pick up the cars and move them so just let it be. Obviously there is nothing you can do about traffic so don't think about it just wake up alittle earlier the next day. If you practice this on small situations, as big obstacles come in your life you will have a stressless approuch to alot of things. Finally never lose hope. Hope is what gives you a path to peacefulness. If you get to a bump in the road, feel in your heart that everything will be ok. Struggle is always only temporary. Knowing that whatever your going through will be over soon lifts all the negative energy off of you. There...

Unit 2 Activity 1

...1. What are Jim’s options? a. In this situation, Jim has a couple of options before him. He could request the meeting be postponed due to the absence of his partner, without whom he cannot complete the presentation. He also could let it be known that he saw Sara at the gas station on his way to work this morning and discredit her. Another option would be for Jim to pick up the slack and put together a presentation with the material he has. 2. What does he actually know and what does he think he knows? Does it matter? b. Jim knows that Sara called out sick and that he does not have her slides for the presentation. He also knows that he is to give a big presentation to the CEO today. He thinks he knows that she isn’t actually sick, but rather skipping the presentation. This matters only if Jim lets it distract him from the task at hand. 3. How could he apply the character qualities you’ve learned about so far (persistence, enthusiasm, optimism, and self-control) in this situation? c. Jim could be persistent and enthusiastic by putting together a presentation with the time he has so that the meeting will not have to be rescheduled. In doing so, having optimism, perhaps the CEO will see that Jim had pulled off the presentation even with his coworker being absent, which could potentially lead to a promotion. Jim needs to show self-control in that he should not mention seeing someone who looked like Sara at the gas station. That information is irrelevant...

My Personal Leadership Philosophy

...MY PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY “To Lead with STRENGTH” My ultimate purpose in writing this is to share to everyone my personal leadership philosophy – what I believe to be important as we go on with the service. I believe that in imparting this set of guidance, you will come to understand who I am, what rules I live and work by, what you can expect from me and what I expect from you, and how I will evaluate your performance. In view hereof, I hope you will learn to trust my actions and know where I am heading. As I round up my values in life, I found out that the foundation of all my feats as I go up the ladder of my career is my STRENGTH. It always gives me the direction; it serves as my compass. The STRENGTH that I’m referring to here is neither physical nor psychological, but rather the energy to organize myself to effectively and efficiently perform my tasks, and the power to unite all of us so that we are able to attain the Army’s Vision of becoming “a professional, capable and responsive Army that is a source of National Pride.” And being your leader, it is my primary duty to impart this STRENGTH so that each of us here will have a moral compass to guide us through the maze of intellectual, philosophical and emotional issues that encompass our lives and the Army. STRENGTH outlines my character and translates to: Selfless service, Trust, Respect, Empowerment, Nobleness, God, Teamwork, and Humility. Selfless Service: When I speak about selfless service, it...

Inaugural Speech of Obama

...Obama Inaugural Address  20th January 2009 My fellow citizens: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet. These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics...

My Birthday Slip

...My Birthday Slip This was my seventeenth birthday and I couldn’t wait for it, although I was going to be in school for it. I was looking forward to all of the birthday wishes, hugs, and gifts. It always happened that way every year, so I shouldn’t have been that much excited; I guess it was because I was turning a year older. The morning of my birthday, I had gotten up and picked out my birthday outfit. I picked skinny leg khaki pants, a white collared aeropostle, shirt, and brown baby doll shoes. To let it be known that it was my birthday, I added a pink birthday stash that read “Birthday Queen” and a pink and silver crown. I made my hair so pretty, with little tight curls and even did my makeup a little. I like to go all out, so of course I had a brand new brown and cheetah print backpack that was similar to my brown baby doll shoes. I was ready to go. By time I made it to my bus stop down the street from my house, I had already received 3 different sets of balloons and a couple of gifts. The whole ride to school I got phone calls and text messages, so I was beyond happy! All of my balloons were in the aisle and in everyone’s way so it was also a difficult ride to school. Still, I didn’t care because it was my birthday. I couldn’t wait to get to school for two reasons: first, to get off the bus with all of my balloons because I started to get a bit annoyed with them and second, to get more birthday wishes, gifts, and attention. Finally, I had made it to school. I was...

John Brown - Notes on Final Address

...John Brown’s Address John Brown Primary Sources Lesson To the Virginia Court, when about to receive the sentence of death for his heroic attempt at Harper’s Ferry, to give deliverance to the captives, and to let the oppressed go free. [Mr. Brown, upon inquiry whether he had anything to say why sentence should not be pronounced upon him, in a clear, distinct voice replied:] I have, may it please the Court, a few words to say. In the first place, I deny everything but what I have already admitted, of a design on my part to free slaves. I intended, certainly, to have made a clean thing of that matter, as I did last winter when I went into Missouri, and there took Slaves without the snapping of a gun on either side, moving them through the country, and finally leaving them in Canada. I designed to have done the same thing again on a larger scale. That was all I intended. I never did intend murder, or treason, or the destruction of property, or to excite or incite Slaves to rebellion, or to make insurrection. I have another objection, and that is that it is unjust that I should suffer such a penalty. Had I interfered in the manner, and which I admit has been fairly proved, -- for I admire the truthfulness and candor of the greater portion of the witnesses who have testified in this case --had I so interfered in behalf of the Rich, the Powerful, the Intelligent, the so-called Great, or in behalf of any of their friends, either father, mother, brother, sister...
