Even though the technology that Iridium offered was far more sophisticated and ahead of its time than iPod; nevertheless, Iridium failed because of poor marketing strategy and false assumptions about their tentative customers. iPod, on the other hand, was not a technological breakthrough rather a design breakthrough and was highly criticized and considered a flop idea. ...About Venture Capital (VC) | Starting and growing a business always require capital. There are a number of alternative methods to fund growth. These include the owner or proprietor’s own capital, arranging debt finance, or seeking an equity partner, as is the case with private equity and venture capital. Private equity is a broad term that refers to any type of non-public ownership equity securities that are not listed on a public exchange. Private equity encompasses both early stage (venture capital) and later stage (buy-out, expansion) investing. In the broadest sense, it can also include mezzanine, fund of funds and secondary investing. Venture capital is a means of equity financing for rapidly-growing private companies. Finance may be required for the start-up, development/expansion or purchase of a company. Venture Capital firms invest funds on a professional basis, often focusing on a limited sector of specialization (eg. IT, infrastructure, health/life sciences, clean technology, etc.). The goal of venture capital is to build companies so that the shares become liquid (through IPO or acquisition) and provide a rate of return to the investors (in the form of cash or shares) that is consistent with the level of risk taken. With venture capital financing, the venture capitalist acquires an agreed proportion of the equity of the company in return for the funding. Equity finance offers the significant advantage of having no interest charges. It is "patient" capital...

Performance Persistence in Entrepreneurship

...Performance Persistence in Entrepreneurship 1. Introduction In this paper, we address two basic questions: Is there performance persistence in entrepreneurship? And, if so, why? Our answer to the first question is yes: all else equal, a venture-capital-backed entrepreneur who succeeds in a venture (by our definition, starts a company that goes public) has a 30% chance of succeeding in his next venture. By contrast, first-time entrepreneurs have only an 18% chance of succeeding and entrepreneurs who previously failed have a 20% chance of succeeding. The answer to the second question of why there is performance persistence is more complex. Performance persistence – for example, among mutual fund managers, stock analysts, or football players – is usually taken as evidence of skill. This is certainly the most straightforward explanation of our finding. Indeed, we will provide additional evidence to support this view. However, in the context of entrepreneurship, there may be another force at work. The perception of performance persistence – the belief that successful entrepreneurs are more skilled than unsuccessful ones – can induce real performance persistence. This would be the case if suppliers and customers are more likely to commit resources to firms that they perceive to be more likely to succeed based on the entrepreneur’s track record. This perception of performance persistence mitigates the coordination problem in which suppliers and customers are unwilling to commit resources...

Discuss with explicit reference to at least 3 of the guest speakers. An intrinsic quality of a problem is demand itself. Demand is a major, if not the most influential variable on a business opportunity, whether that be from a single individual or the entire population. As a result, a problem is arguably the primary source of an unexploited populace and/or economy and drive of innovation. The scale to which the problem is solved, measured relative to its complete effectiveness.
