Why is Safety important to you?
Safety is important to me because it helps to prevent injuries, deaths, loss of property, and damage to the environment. Safety is a strong passion of mine that goes beyond the workplace. It is a strong desire to ensure that workers leave their homes and return to their loved ones at the end of their shifts.
A couple of years ago, I lost 12 close friends and colleagues in a chopper crash during a routine crew change. The root cause of the incident was an unsafe condition resulting from a safety oversight and a faulty safe work practice. These were 12 lives that were attached to 12 families whose lives never remained the same.
Safety is important because it does not leave anyone behind. Each that I come to work, I want to return home to my Wife and kids in the same form or better that I came to work in. Everyone has a part to play in the improvement of the overall safety performance of an organization. How would you deal with a challenging client?
A few months ago, I was the Lead breathing air technician at a shutdown in a refinery in Edmonton. The refinery’s policy required that every contractor on site must have a confined space entry ticket that must be presented to the confined space watch before entry into the space can is approved.
I received a radio call from one of my confined space attendants that a welder did not have his ticket and was refused entry into the vessel. The said welder was getting agitated and was challenging the worker why he was refused
