...HCS/587 September 24, 2012 Dr. Margaret Walker We Need a Change The Autauga-Elmore Mental Retardation Board has decided an electronic medical record system should be purchased and implemented. The board and team feel an electronic medical record would help to bring cohesion between the nurses, case managers, physicians, and families. However, there are barriers to the change and factors that could influence the proposal and implementation of changing to a paperless system. Lewins’ theory of change is the model the agency will be using to implement the change process. However, as the change process takes place, there are methods the organization will use to monitor the change process. An examination if the relationship between the organization’s related processes, systems, and personal or professional roles and their affect on the proposed organizational change will be completed. SPECIAL FEATURES: PRACTICE CONCEPTS The Child Welfare System: Through the Eyes of Public Health Nurses Janet U. Schneiderman ABSTRACT Objective: This qualitative descriptive study investigates how public health nurses working within the child welfare system view the organization and the organizationÕs effect on their case management practice. Design: Semistructured interviews were conducted utilizing the Bolman—Deal Organizational Model. This model identifies four frames of an organization: symbolic, human resources, political, and structural. Sample: A purposive sample of nine nurses and one social worker was selected to participate in comprehensive interviews. Results: Data analysis identified two main themes. The first theme was the presence of organizational structural barriers to providing case management. The second theme was the lack of political influence by the nurses to change the structure of the organization; hence, their skills could be more completely utilized. Conclusions: Public health nurses who work in child welfare will need to systematically analyze their role within the organization and understand how to work in Òhost settings.Ó Nursing educators need to prepare public health nurses to work in non-health care settings by teaching organizational analysis. ...The role of the supervisor in managing absenteeism According to the most recent CCH Unscheduled Absence Survey, employers are losing ground when it comes to keeping workers on the job. Unscheduled absenteeism rates have risen to their highest level since 1999. What continues to be of most concern is that almost two out of three employees who don’t show up for work aren’t physically ill. For most companies, the responsibility for managing absenteeism has fallen primarily on immediate supervisors. These supervisors are often the only people who are aware that a certain employee is absent. They are in the best position to understand the circumstances surrounding an individual’s absence and to notice a problem at an early stage. Therefore, their active involvement in the company’s absence procedures is pivotal to the overall effectiveness and future success of an absence policy or program. Sadly, however, most supervisors have not received any guidance or training in managing absenteeism. They have been left on their own to carry out the often unpopular task of identifying, confronting and resolving absence abuse. To ensure that supervisors are comfortable and competent in their role of managing absenteeism, they need to have the full support of senior management. All parties must be aware of the aim of absence policies and procedures. Should there be discrepancies between departments; a policy can lose its effectiveness. To provide more consistency, supervisors should be trained...

Metropolitan Motor Company (MMC) decided to open a new assembly plant in southwest Tennessee for their new compact passenger car line. The plant would require a workforce of approximately 1700 production workers, 370 supervisors and managers, 125 engineers and engineering technicians, and 110 administrative and office personnel. The cafeteria and security functions would be outsourced to independent contractors. Below, we describe the sequence that was used to staff the hourly production positions in this new facility. Before announcing the location of the facility, MMC did some investigation of the educational characteristics of the labor force in Tennessee, as well as a review of the secondary school system in a five county area surrounding the plant site. It decided to give first priority in employment for entry level and skilled positions to residents in the five county area, then to Tennessee residents, and finally to anyone, regardless of place of residence. The VP of corporate HR took several trips to talk to state and local officials about locating the facility in the area. State Department of Labor officials agreed that the state employment offices would accept and screen applications for entry level positions, using criteria developed by MMC.
