Introduction
This report is to analysis an appropriate price of a Bic pen. To plan on purchasing 10,000 Bic pens each year for total five years. Through analyzing the material, Mfg costs, labor costs, SG&A and packaging, transportation and profit of a Bic pen to get a reasonable price. Material
According to Lemon (2016), Bic pen is made of tungsten carbide ballpoint, Brass tip, link, polystyrene barrel and polypropylene cap and tube. To be more exact, the ballpoint is made of tungsten carbide which can be found the price is USD 60/Kilogram in the Alibaba website. To use the density of the material(15.63g/cm3)and the volume formula of ball(r=0.5mm),to get the weight of the ball is around 0.00817g, thereby we can get that the price of each ballpoint is 0.06USD. Secondly, the brass price is USD 8/kilogram, which can be found in Alibaba.com. The weight of each tip brass is 1.28g (Pen Modding, 2016), so the each price is 0.0102USD. Thirdly, due to the length of ink tube is 10.2cm, the internal diameter is 2mm and the density of ink is1.11 g/cm3. Therefore, the weight of the ink is approximately 0.36g, and the link cost is about 0.003USD for each pen. Fourthly, the polystyrene barrel for ink remains in the pen which cost USD 1800/metric ton. It is necessary to use the outer diameter (3mm), internal diameter (2mm) and density of the material (0.95 g/cm3) to get the weight of barrel is about 0.45g, thus, per barrel cost 0.00081USD. Finally, the weight of a Bic pen is 6g (Start Right Supplies, 2016), and then reduce the weight of the link, barrel, ballpoint and brass tip, we can get the weight of pen cap and tube(3.9g), so the price of cap and tube is around 0.00464 USD.
Mfg Costs
According to the Bic Half-Year Financial Report (2015, Bic’tween us, p26), it is easy to see the production machinery depreciation and amortization cost was 43,033,000 Euros (46,871,543USD). There are 34% parts for production stationery (46,871,543*0.34=15,936,324 USD) (BIC'tween us - N°5, 2015), so, the Mfg cost for per Bic pen was around 0.0036 USD in 2015
Labor Costs
Due to the labor cost was 303,132,000 Euros (329,989,495USD) (2015, Bic’tween us, p26). Meanwhile, 34% parts for production stationery (329,989,495*0.34=112,196,428 USD), therefore, for each Bic pen, labor cost was approximately 0.0256 USD in the year of 2015.
Overhead Costs
Based on the Bic Half-Year Financial Report (2015, Bic’tween us, p26), the other operating costs was 239,849,000 Euros (261,099,621USD), for the stationery part, there are 261,099,621*0.34=88,773,871 USD. Thus, the overhead costs of per Bic pen was 0.02024 USD in 2015.
SG&A Costs
As Bic Half-Year Financial Report (2015, Bic’tween us, p14) noted that the expense of SG&A was 114,717,000 Euros (12,483,503USD). Then, for the stationery part, it is easy to get the data: 12,483,503*0.34=4,244,391 USD. Therefore, for per pen was 0.00969 USD in 2015.
Package
According to the packaging shipping boxes price (0.01 USD/carton) which shows in Alibaba.com, then, 10,000 Bic pens needs about 167 boxes because there are 60 pens in one box. Thus, each Bic pen needs to be paid 0.00167 USD for packaging.
Transportation
We choose UPS shipping company for shipping the 10,000 from Mexico to Canada, and according to the charge standard of UPS, the transportation price is 645.95(UPS, 2016). Therefore, per Bic pen can cost about 0.0645 USD.
Profits
The price of Bic Round Stic ballpoint pens, Medium Tip, 1.0mm, Blue, 60/packs is 10.19CAD (7.194 USD) in the Staples online shop. Thereby, each Bic pen is 0.1199 USD.
Conclusion
After analyzing eight steps of the Bic pen, the cost of per Bic pen is approximately 0.32USD, so that we will buy totally 50,000 Bic pens among 5 years, which expense 0.32*50,000=16,000 USD.

...Supply Chain Management: CEO Decision on West Coast Expansion Yunior A. Espinal Colorado Tech University SCM 210 – Intro to Logistics / Supply Chain May 1, 2015 Supply Chain Management: CEO Decision on West Coast Expansion Section I: Introduction The main pro for having multiple distribution centers and shipping locations across the U.S. is to have the ability to meet customer demand at all major locations. Other pros include lowering the transportation and freight costs to diverse customer locations. Reducing the travel area when establishing multiple distribution centers and shipping locations lower transportation costs. The expectation is that multiple distribution centers will help to lower the time frame for customer servicing by meeting current customer demand. Effectively, linking demand with inventory (Fortna, n.d.). Intuitively, cons include the cost of land, buildings, labor, and equipment, for the development of multiple distribution centers and shipping locations. The rate of domestic sales for each region should increase faster than the rate of cost of operations for each regional distribution center. The benefit of having more than one international distribution center is to manage more effectively the distribution of international sales. Cons include the higher cost of labor (Blackerby, 2003). Cost of labor is reflective of the underlying exchange rate of the euro/USD or 1 euro = $1.50. The cons of an international shipping location instead shipping from the...

Inventory Management

...Inventory Management | Intro to Logistics and Supply Chain Management | Susan Calhoun | Gettemeier, Alexandria | 4/1/2012 | Inventory Management “Inventory Management is the process of efficiently overseeing the constant flow of units into and out of an existing inventory.” (BarcodesINC 1) An inventory manager supervises the product from the manufacturer to the warehouse where it is being stored; then from the point of sale to the customer. An inventory manager becomes involved in the fine lines between replenishment lead-times, storage costs, asset management (to include returns and defective material), and demand forecasting. It is very important to balance these competitive requirements in order to determine the optimal inventory levels required to meet business objectives. The success in managing the inventory determines the overall health of the supply management chain and has impact to the financial balance sheet. The Inventory manager must be a very detailed person who must continually monitor material as it moves in and out of stockroom locations, maintain accurate records of inventory levels, and take the appropriate action to ensure stock is available when it is needed. Important Factors in Inventory Management The factor that is the most important in inventory management, in order to have a successful business, is meeting the demand of the customer. The supplier must have the products available when the customer needs or wants them. If the...

In the face of growing competition from road and low-cost airlines, to retain its customers, IR has responded by changing its business rules. The Railway Ministry expects a rapid response from Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) to incorporate all these changes in the passenger reservation system (PRS). The old PRS, which is time-tested and reliable, and has been serving the customers’ needs for nearly two decades, is now proving to be relatively inflexible to match the rapidly changing business requirements. Although the current scenario of a constant need to change the programming logic of PRS has been making maintenance tougher for CRIS officials, they have realized that PRS is a time-tested...

...INTRO: AN OLD CHAMPION PROBING INTO THE FUTURE In this group assignment, we analyze Haier Group’s strategic position and outlook in China’s home appliances industry. By only focusing on the most up-to-date articles and resources available, we have come to the somewhat surprising realization that Haier Group is at the forefront of maturing into a networks platform and a solution provider to an ever-segmented market. While this transformation seemed only logical to any multinational corporation under the sea change brought about by the Information Age and the new paradigm spearheaded by Google and Amazon, Haier Group’s strategic response to what time has called upon them has been quite elusive and subtle. We will demonstrate how Haier Group, with so many success stories from its past, along with the cultural baggage it could evolve beyond, should adapt to the present and fulfill its future promise. PART I. Environmental scanning and industry analysis The STEEP analysis in this section will focus on the most relevant aspects with Haier Group in China: Chinese consumer’s recent socioeconomic development and technological development; the two aspects obviously have huge cultural and political ramification which we also include in the scanning. Toward the end of this section, we will demonstrate these aspects have presented both challenges as well as solutions. 1. Outsourcing

...the true Impact? Cameron D. Rafford MGT 580: Intro to Organizational Behavior University of New Hampshire INTRODUCTION Outsourcing has quickly become one of the most controversial business tactics in the United States. Nowadays, if you call the customer service line of a major business or corporation, there’s a good chance you’ll end up talking to someone thousands of miles away. If you go shopping for new clothes, it’s likely that some of the shirts and pants you try on were manufactured by people from foreign countries, in shops far less glamorous than the ones the finished products end up in. Outsourcing is so commonplace in certain industries, we don’t even think twice about it anymore. But over the past few years, the trend has spread to practices far beyond call centers and apparel manufacturing. In fact, you might be surprised at the industries that rely on outsourcing now (Divine, 2010). This paper will examine the effects that outsourcing has already had on business, as well as look a little bit into the future to see what it holds for us down the road. It will focus on how it has affected our economy and society as a whole, as well as the individual organizations and their employees. There are both positive and negative impacts of this way of doing business that need to be realized and accounted for in order for the economy and American business to remain strong. We will reflect on both sides of the...
