Is Social Networking Taking Over? Social networking sites have been around since the mid-nineties and have continued to gain popularity through the years. New sites are constantly launching. Computers, smart phones and TVs, and tablets have become household fixtures for the majority of the population. We have incorporated them into our daily lives and routines and because of this we have access to social networking sites 24/7. Spending too much time on these sites creates the potential of a more sedentary lifestyle, becoming more egocentric, and withdrawing from activities and relationships. Social networking sites help connect us with the world, but with all that convenience and information comes a new set of social issues. In Introduction to Digital Literacy, Bowles (2013) gives in depths look at Web 2.0, its tools, and its significance. Web 2.0 gives us the ability to blog, tweet, email, and generally interact with others by using our computers or mobile devices. Bowles goes into some great detail about how to use social networking sites properly, protect one’s privacy, and the computer slang that has now become a part of the English language. While the exciting and wonderful world of social networking is celebrated, it is also mentioned that there is a dark side. One must be discrete and private about information they choose to share on social networking sites. Bowles (2013) cautions and educates one about social networking while making one aware that the positives offset the negatives. One of the main ways we use computer technology is through social networking. Over the years we’ve encountered Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, Classmates, Vine, and so many more. It’s the quickest and easiest way to connect to

Trust and Social Networks

...Is it feasible to be able to trust everyone in a network of millions of people that you may be associated with? Many are evidently signing up to social networking sites and, as such, revealing much information about themselves. Does trust play a role in the use of social networking sites? Discuss and contrast. It could be said that online social privacy is harder to guarantee, so should one consider a higher level of concern for internet privacy and do you believe a lack of trust affects the popularity of social networking sites? According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s dictionary, trust is defined as [1]: “the belief that somebody or something is good, sincere, honest, etc. and will not try to harm or trick you.” If this definition is adopted - as this essay will clearly show - it is clearly not feasible to trust everyone in a network of millions of people one might have contact with. Trust has always played a crucial role in determining the depth of human relationships. This is valid even more now that social networking tools enable people to connect with others in ways that were not possible before their invention. As a consequence, the essay will show that a lack of trust can seriously affect the popularity of such tools. A social network based on the Internet technology can be conceived as a social structure composed of individuals connected by some type of mutual interests. Technology developments brought major breakthroughs like the elimination of barriers of space...

Recommendation

...Recommendation Negatives Not everyone in the 21st century thinks about the negative effects of having social networking accounts - but simple things like not setting your privacy settings properly or liking someone's photo can have bad results. Cyberbullying can be a problem as people can take advantage of the fact that there is no one who can effectively stop the bullying when it happens, due to everything being performed behind a screen. The only way for a bully to be stopped is if they are reported and victims may be too intimidated to do it. Social networking can also ruin relationships as people may get jealous if they find out their boyfriend or girlfriend is exchanging messages with other people. It can also be a waste of time as people can visit a site to check on thing and end up spending the whole day 'behind the screen' and as a result, not doing anything useful with their lives. Positives Social networking has lots of good points You can express yourself, showing off your favourite song lyrics or posting pictures of your new outfit. It is a lot harder to feel embarrassment over the internet than in person, so people find it easier to vent their feelings on sites like Facebook. In fact, it has become so much a part of people's lives that you can learn someone's life story just by checking their page. Their friends, likes and dislikes, relationship status, phone number, address…everything. You can share your feelings and your mental stresses - and it is a great way...

She is a student of class eight and she is studying in holy cross school. Among all cousins we are good friends. Every year during Eid-ul-Fitar we meet together and have fun. But in last Eid I was surprised at something. Nomita was talking with me but I can sense that she was not with me. She was taking with me and at a time she was typing in her mobile. Suddenly she asked me what status she will post in facebook wall. All of her talking was facebook related and I was being bored and moreover our taking was interrupted by her texting. I understood that she wanted to use facebook rather enjoying my company. So I told her to finish her job and join me. Long time passed but she did not come and I was shocked because it never happened before and what I saw make me astonished that she is completely absorbed in facebook. I guess she has a relation in facebook and it really seems to me ridiculous to wind up with a relation just seeing a profile. One may give wrong information about oneself to attract others. I became concerned if she has a relation and concern if she does something wrong. It is easy to done something wrong because people of this age are easily driven by their whim and curiosity. I discussed it with her .She said nothing and smiled. I also see the same scenario in my friend...

Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and MySpace have provided the world a way to interact with others and share information fast and easy through the internet. However, social networks also have consequences to them that many may not be aware of. ‘’Privacy in the age of social web’’ an article by Greg R. Notess, published in 2009, discusses how social networks and search engines can access and share the information users provide online, and how to users can increase their privacy. The author highlights how social networks can save our information provided and once the information is shared it is difficult to delete it. Increasing privacy settings to determine who can view the users profile and information is also discussed. However, the article lacks in arguments as to how much users could actually be harmed by social networks, apart from deleting previously shared information, photos, videos etc. Overall the source is very informative to social networks user on how social networks could use the information they provide and how to increase their privacy against this. The Importance Of Social Networking

...How Social Networking is Changing Lives for the Better Ever wonder what makes social networking helpful in the lives of others and what the real logic behind everyone using it is? Social networking is more than what it seems to be, it is a way of interacting with others to talk about interests or simply connect with people. Opponents argue that social media can be troublesome, and is causing cyberbullying within the internet since bullies believe they have authority over others and can do whatever they desire, even if they do not see the pained expression on the victims face in person. On the other hand, parents can control the problem by limiting texting apps to a minimum that could potentially become a harm to one's life. With the use of...

Social Media and Punishments

...news there have been discussions on online social networks and how teenagers should be disciplined for inappropriate use. A mother in Texas took a new twist on using social networking for punishing her 12 year old daughter when she posted pictures that the mother said was not suitable. After multiple warnings, the daughter posted a picture of herself holding a bottle of vodka with the caption “I sure wish I could drink this.” Her mother decided to take a picture of her daughter that did not show her face, holding a sign reading “Since I want to post photos of me holding liquor, I am obviously not ready for social media and will be taking a hiatus until I learn what I should (and) should not post. Bye-bye.” Psychologist and teenage behavior specialist discussed how this type of punishment is damaging to a teenager because social networking is seen by their friends. By reading the story, a glimpse of using modern parental discipline shows the thoughts of the parents, children, and experts in teenage behaviors. The article highlights the impact on teenage online punishment, but does not give enough information to give a clear defining point of view. Not only did the mother take away her daughter’s use of social networking but also posted a picture stating her daughter...
