Tonight I went to a talk with Insecure’s creator and writer Issa Rae. I have long been a fan of hers ever since her YouTube show Awkward Black Girl. Tonight she sat down with Vulture magazine to talk about her new found fame and the success of Insecure and other ventures she is currently working on.
Issa begin talking about her earlier years and how she wanted to be a writer once she graduated from college but, she was having a hard time finding work. “I couldn’t find a damn job in the industry to save my life.” This is all too real for me, the one thing I tend to worry about when I get out of this program is where will I find work. I have gone through this before when I graduated from undergrad. I was thinking I would be able to get a job in the industry and it just didn’t happen. Now that I am graduating in a few weeks from BU, I can’t help but think am I going to have the same fate. I don’t like uncertainty and nothing is Hollywood is certain.…show more content… The inspiration came from her own life. She said “I was the awkward black girl. You know, the one at your job, the only black girl, who just can’t fit in.” She went to say that her experiences with white people and the micro aggressions and cultural difference were driving her crazy in her head so she decided to get with some of her friends and make it show. This resonated with me as I am often the only Black person at work or in a class. The cultural differences and the things that people say that can make you cringe but, you don’t want to act out because then you are seen a “that kind of black person” so you hold it inside until you get around you friends and can talk and laugh about
