IT Management
Information systems is a vital part of what organizations can do with their technology. The system development life cycle is a powerful mechanism for evaluating an organization's current and future SDLC needs (Norton, 2012). IT methodologies lay the blue print for being able to manage and accomplish projects when developing an organization’s needs. Traditional methodology and agile methodology are methodologies used.
Traditional Methodology
One example of traditional methodology is the waterfall approach. The waterfall follows the belief that all user requirements needed for the design can be collected upfront. This is referred to method makes the assumption that all requirements can be gathered up front during the requirements phase (Hughey, 2009). During this approach, the project manager tries their best to establish the user requirements. Once the user requirements are obtained the process starts. This process is known as downhill. The process goes through four phases. They are design, implementation, verification, and maintenance.
To starts the design phase, an analysis is done to break the design in sub-phases logical design and physical design. During the Logical Design phase, the system's analysts makes use of the information collected in the Requirements phase to design the system independently of any hardware or software system (Hughey, 2009). Once the logical design has been complete, the physical design begins to surface. The physical design determines the specific software and hardware needed for the design. The next phase is the implementation phase. During this phase, the coding for the design is created. This phase belongs to the programmers in the Waterfall method, as they take the project requirements and specifications, and code the applications (Hughey, 2009). The verification phase is next. The verification phase is testing done to ensure design meets user expectations. Lastly is the maintenance phase. During the maintenance phase, the design is being used. When design is being used, problems are being addressed as they are found. User requirements can change during this phase which cause updates to occur.
The waterfall approach does come with advantages and disadvantages. Advantages include design errors are captured before any software is written saving time during the implementation phase, excellent technical documentation is part of the deliverables and it is easier for new programmers to get up to speed during the maintenance phase, the approach is very structured and it is easier to measure progress by reference to clearly defined milestones, the total cost of the project can be accurately estimated after the requirements have been defined (via the functional and user interface specifications, and testing is easier as it can be done by reference to the scenarios defined in the functional specification (Hughey, 2009). Disadvantages include clients will often find it difficult to state their requirements at the abstract level of a functional specification, the model does not cater for the possibility of requirements changing during the development cycle, and a project can often take substantially longer to deliver than when developed with an iterative methodology such as the agile development method (Hughey, 2009).
Agile Methodology
One example of agile methodology is the scrum process. The scrum process uses the project management for development. During the scrum process, working in groups or teams are used. The team commits to a defined goal for an iteration and is given the authority, autonomy, and responsibility to decide how best to meet it (Williams Laurie, 2007). The scrum process consists of sprint planning, scrum meeting, and sprint review.
Sprint planning is a meeting the involves the development team, management, and the product owner. In the planning meeting, the Product Owner chooses which features are included in the next 30-day increment (called a Sprint) usually driven by highest business value and risk (Williams Laurie, 2007). At this point, a sprint goal is created and presented to the scrum team. The development team configures what features are needed for the goal to be met. Once this set of features has been identified, no re-prioritization takes place during the ensuing 30-day Sprint in which features are designed, implemented and tested (Williams Laurie, 2007). Scrum short meetings are held daily. These meeting are 15 minutes held by management. The meeting asks questions to team members in regards to progress on the scrum goal. These meeting are important because they keep the project up to date and keeps project on course. It also gives team members the opportunity to share information among themselves. At the end of a sprint, a sprint review takes place to review progress, demonstrate features to the customer, management, users and the Product Owner and review the project from a technical perspective (Williams Laurie, 2007).
Norton Strategy Norton suggests application delivery for matching business requirements. Pace layered application strategy is a suggestion by Norton. Pace layering is a diagnostic tool that enables CIOs to target efforts on the areas of best return (Norton, 2012). Pace layered application strategy is built to deliver a quicker response and an improved ROI. This is done without having to rule out other operations. Pace layered application strategy allows for organizations to think outside the box when it comes to developing applications.
Conclusion
Cloud computing can bring value to an organization. This can be achieved if the right software is used. IT methodologies assist assuring that the correct software is used. With any process there are disadvantage and advantages. Some disadvantages of cloud computing are not reliable, doesn’t not have security compliance, and not compatible to existing hardware and software. Some advantages are unlimited storage, backup recovery, mobility, and cost efficient. In order for an organization to determine if cloud computing is to their benefit, an analysis of their current technologic conditions would be necessary.
