...Politics of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Janell Fogle Strayer University U.S. Government Professor Stallo 11/15/2015 Politics of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Introduction Civil Rights Events that Influence Social Responsibility in American People Today In the American history, several Civil liberties events have played an indispensable role in shaping the approach of Americans to social responsibility. For instance, the signing of executive order 9981 by President Truman in 1948 was critical in eliminating discrimination among Americans (Carson, 2013). The executive order declared equity of treatment among all persons working in the department of defense. Indeed, this was a milestone in getting rid of the discrimination that was rampant among the armed forces personnel. Before, the signing of the order, only African American served in the American military frontlines. This act was highly criticized by people of African-American descent as it was an apparent show of discrimination based on color and race (Carson, 2013). However, the signing of the executive order brought about equity by eliminating discrimination of the armed officers depending on their color and race. To date, the signing of the executive order has been fundamental to eliminating discrimination and bringing about equity among Americans. Secondly, the second amendment of 1968 was crucial in enhancing the freedom of speech among the American people (Jackson, 2009)....

...POWER AND POLITICS Politics in work places simply put is about getting noticed and liked by the right people in other to advance up the career ladder in an organization and also to achieve position of power that confers a status of relevance in the scheme of affairs in an organization. This definition is supported by an old saying that ‘’it’s not what you know ,but who you know’’. It is upon this premise that human beings are classified as political animals and as such it is difficult to eliminate politics from workplaces.’’ While teamwork may be extolled as an organizational virtue ,in the real practice, workplaces are likely to be characterized by competition and conflicts as it is by cooperation (Fineman and Gabriel,1996). Politics is a means through which individual self-interests are pursued without regard to the their effect in the realization of the organizations objectives .Organizational politics is arguably one of the most researched concepts in the field of management’’ ( Boateng et al ,2013)the researches here are to understand the impact of organizational politics on business entities. ...How Company Politics Can Affect Projects & the Selection of Projects by Jonathan Lister , Demand Media Company politics can have a vast influence on the project proposal process of a business and which projects the company chooses to undertake. These influences can encourage and discourage competition and innovation, depending on the nature of the company's political climate. Employees and managers at a small business must work together to manage company politics and not allow these maneuvers to overshadow the formal hierarchy. Loudest Voices Win Those who show no fear in participating in company politics are able to establish the relationships necessary to gain a powerful voice in the decision-making process. This can provide employees with an opportunity to display important job skills, which can turn political influence in the company into very real promotions. According to CNN Money's website, those who attempt to remain above the fray miss out on chances to establish a leadership presence and influence the progress of company projects, including deciding which projects get endorsed. Circumventing Formal Hierarchy Company politics circumvents normally established hierarchy within a business. This means a lower-level employee can establish a connection with an executive and gain a voice in decisions she may not otherwise have an opportunity to participate in. She can influence the decision-making process informally to gain approval for projects that benefit her...

...INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIZATIONAL POLITICS POLITICS Power is the capacity to influence others through the control of instruments of reward and punishment – which can be tangible or intangible. Definitions of power abound. German sociologist, Max Weber defined power as "the probability that one actor within a social relationship will be in a position to carry out his own will despite resistance." Along similar lines, Emerson suggests that "The power of actor A over actor B is the amount of resistance on the part of B which can be potentially overcome by A." Power appears to involve one person changing the behavior of one or more other individuals – particularly if that behavior would not have taken place otherwise. Sources of Power are: (vi) Legitimate power – derived from the position e.g. kingship, managerial (vii) Reward Power – derived from control of resources e.g. promotion, recommendation, training etc (viii) Referent power– derived from association with powerful people (ix) Coercive power – uses the ability to force other people to act against their wishes through the fear of punishment. (x) Expert power – derived from the possession of expert knowledge or information that others need but have no alternative access. Politics is also the study of influence and the influential • Influence is measured on the basis of the number of shares one or a group has in the preferred values or attributes • The more values or attributes shared...

...at their current positions, so they may catapult to the next level. The ability to obtain a powerful position solidifies the feeling of having control over the future of your career and well being. Power is a multifaceted resource that most individuals crave, and would go to any lengths to obtain. Although it is important to solidify your future, you must also remain ethically and morally sound while doing so. Having read a scenario from a case study that proposed an ethical dilemma, I found that the rise for power and political gain in the workplace can test both an individual’s ethical judgment and strength. The issue here is that Michael is faced with an ethical dilemma regarding whether or not to participate in politics in order to capture a higher position within another sector of his organization. He is aware that his opponent Danielle has entered workplace politics at full speed, and is using every opportunity to gain leverage against Michael. The executive that will choose the best person for the position is Pierre, who is fair and diligent when choosing the appropriate candidate for the job. Michael however, has a real problem with trying to strategically place himself at the center of Pierre’s attention for the U.S. job. He has observed Danielle making great strides to win over Pierre by attracting him with her new ideas and the social alliances she is making within the company. He is truly reluctant about playing office politics, but feels that if he completely shies...

In a business big and small, the impact of power depends on whether employees use positive or negative power to influence others in the workplace. Politics may directly influence who has the power and determine whether the workplace encourages productivity. Positive power in an organization involves encouraging productivity. This includes giving employees the power to make decisions, rewarding employees for strong performance and appointing employees who perform strongly to supervise other employees. Positive power builds employee confidence and motivates employees to work harder. Negative organisational politics may be very destructive for an organisation.Negative politics includes the use of subversive methods to promote a personal agenda which may undermine organisational objectives, distract away from organisational goals and compromise the interests, cooperation and fulfilment of other employees. Such tactics may include filtering or distortion of information, non-cooperation, allocating blame, dishonesty, obstructionism and threats. ...One of the social maladies of India is the participation of the students in political activities. Their interest in politics has a deleterious effect on their academic career. May be, a student who engages himself in politics and is drawn to the charismatic political leaders will grow to be a politician and carve a niche for himself in the political arena. But generally a student’s participation in politics is not advisable, for, politics is a forbidden area to the young, immature student, whose unrestrained enthusiasm may land him in trouble if he follows in the footsteps of a misleading leader, whose policies and programmes may be sectarian and adverse to the nation’s weal. One important reason why a student is cautioned against straying into the political field is that his attention is diverted from his studies which should be his main concern. The purpose of education is defeated once he deviates from pursuing his educational career. He cannot devote his attention to politics and studies in equal measure, and if he does so, his mind is divided between two pursuits, and he is neither here nor there. This pitiable situation should be foreseen by a student before taking the step of taking part in politics whose turbulent current may take him away to unknown depths, may wash him off to some unknown corner, where caught up in a whirlpool, he may meet with his doom. This is the fate sought by him through his immaturity. The youth should again and again be warned that they should...
