Using Satellites to Stop Human Disasters

As the capabilities of commercial satellites have continued to improve over the last decade, organizations such as UNITAR/UNOSAT (United Nations Institute for Training and Research/ Operational Satellite Applications Progamme) have been making progress toward a goal of using imagery to stop humanitarian disasters before they start. Although current efforts aren't without problems, the potential for future is promising:

Can Satellites in the Sky Help Prevent Atrocities on Earth?
(Sensors and Systems, November 26, 2013)

Comment: In my opinion, this article has at least three key takeaways:
1. Speed is life when it comes to using imagery for this purpose.
2. Go for a "quick-look" first, then follow up with high-resolution as needed, and as time allows.
3. The Achilles heel is no longer the lack of data to show, it's managing the flood data that's available.

A United Launch Alliance (ULA) unmanned Atlas V rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station this Thursday morning, toting along with it an Air Force top-secret satellite.
Lifting off at 9:09 a.m. EDT, the NROL-33 mission launch was carried out for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), which designs, builds and flies America's intelligence satellites, according to the Associated Press.

Details behind the satellite's mission remain classified for national security reasons, but according to SpaceFlight101, it is most likely a Quasar satellite that will become part of the Satellite Data System. These types of satellites are communication relay satellites for transmitting real-time data in polar areas, and are also used as a means of communication to US Air Force aircraft on polar routes.
Today's launch is on its way to an undisclosed orbit to deploy the clandestine payload, and though its destination and objective remain unknown, officials assure us that any launch serves an important purpose.
"We are committed to smart acquisition investments and practices to ensure the continued coverage and availability of our vital National Security systems and we work tirelessly to continue to deliver these systems on time and within budget," NRO Director Betty Sapp said in a SpaceFlightNow.com article.
This is the 46th flight for the Atlas 5 rocket produced by ULA, but the vehicle has come under fire recently, mainly from SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk, who spent the better half of last month at odds with the Air Force and ULA over these kinds of spy launches.
The rocket is fueled by the Russian-built RD-180 main engine, a country which currently has sanctions imposed upon them by the United States due to the crisis in Ukraine. As a result, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the country would no longer supply the United States with such equipment if they are to be used for national security-related launches.
In the event that Russia follows through on its promise, the Air Force is looking elsewhere for an alternative engine supplier. Musk believes SpaceX is up for the job seeing as how they produce their own rocket engines, and conducting such top-secret launches through them would save American taxpayers $1 billion.

USGS shuts down Landsat 5, the longest-operating Earth-observing satellite

Launched back in March of 1984 with the intent of capturing satellite imagery of Earth, Landsat 5 was initially only planned for a three-year mission. Back in March of this year, it celebrated 28 years of being operational, 25 years beyond its projected lifespan. After 29 years of orbiting Earth, making a complete orbit over 150,000 times, and transmitting over 2.5 million images back to home base, the Landsat 5 will be shutting down for good.
The US Geological Survey made the decision to put the satellite to bed in the wake of a gyroscope failure on the satellite. Landsat 5 was launched with the goal of creating a global archive of satellite photos of Earth, which in turn would help us better understand our planet’s environmental issues. USGS Director Marcia McNutt noted that Landsat 5 most likely recorded any mark left on Earth bigger than a football field, “whether it was a hurricane, a tsunami, a wildfire, deforestation, or an oil spill.” Obviously, Landsat 5′s observations include the larger impact humans have on the planet, from urban growth and deforestation, to disasters caused by mankind like Chernobyl. Landsat 5 can transmit images at a rate of 85Mbps, and it takes the satellite around 16 days to scan the entire planet.
Landsat 5 has experienced a multitude of operational issues since its launch. Back in November 2005, the satellite experienced a problem with the solar array drive, which in turn is responsible for charging the batteries that keep the satellite running. However, the situation was remedied and the satellite was able to continue its extended mission. In August of 2009, for unknown reasons, the satellite spun out of control and power drastically dropped, but the satellite resumed normal operations a handful of days later. In November of 2011, part of Landsat 5′s image transmission system temporarily failed, but was restored 90 days later. Despite all these problems, the USGS has miraculously kept the satellite functional for almost thirty years. Unfortunately, the gyroscope failure marks the end of the line. Landsat imagery, showing the Great Salt Lake in 1972, 1988, and 2002
Rather than crash the satellite into a safe part of the Moon like the recently demolished GRAIL probes, USGS will begin flight maneuvers to bring Landsat 5 home starting sometime next month. Landsat 7, which was launched back in 1999, will continue Landsat 5′s mission, and in February of 2013, Landsat 8 will launch, dubbed the Landsat Data Continuity Mission.
If you want to sift through reams of interesting images resulting from the Landsat program, head on over to the Landsat Missions website. The archive is free, and contains almost ten million images, so if you’ve been looking for something to kill time before the New Year, this should do the trick.

At 5 p.m. ET today, Europe is expected to launch the first of six satellites that will eventually form multi-billion-dollar Copernicus Earth observation project developed to provide valuable data about the planet for everyday applications, for efforts geared toward improving the way the environment is managed -- and which could supply images in the event of a natural disaster or events like plane crashes.
Best of all, according to the European Space Agency, the Copernicus database will not only be open to users worldwide, but are also free of charge.
The Sentinel-1 satellite, which carries a 40-foot-long radar antenna, as well as two 33-foot-long solar panels, is to be blasted into orbit from Europe's spaceport in French Guiana aboard a Russian-made Soyuz rocket and then settle into orbit at a distance of 439 miles above the earth.

Once in orbit, the satellite will monitor sea ice, oil spills and land use, as well as respond to natural emergencies like floods and earthquakes.
The $11.5 billion Copernicus project, funded by the ESA as well as the European Union, is considered to be Europe's most ambitious space mission so far.
The launch of the project's first satellite became especially urgent after Europe lost contact with its 10-year-old Earth observation satellite Envisat in 2012, according to a report by Reuters.
"The big step forward is that we can now cover every place on Earth every 3-6 days," Volker Liebig, director of ESA's Earth Observation program, told Reuters. "This used to take much longer with Envisat. If you want to use images for disaster management support or to find a plane, then you want the images to be as fresh as possible."
Weather satellites have been providing operational data for years, and now the family of Sentinel missions will do the same for environmental monitoring.
"On one side," Guido Levrini, the Copernicus Space Segment program manager, said in an ESA news release, " this launch is the culmination of a decade of personal professional investment and on the other side it is the beginning of a large-scale construction. It is the first stone, the foundation of a soon-to-materialise splendid cathedral -- we already get a glimpse of its cupola from the distance."
The project's six Sentinel satellites, each carrying cutting-edge monitoring equipment, will deliver a stream of images and data that can be tailored to the specific needs of those who access the database.
Inmarsat now giving away free satellite tracking for airplanes – but MH370 is still nowhere to be found

Inmarsat, the British satellite operator that was pivotal to tracking down the final location of flight MH370, will now offer a free tracking service for all passenger airplanes. This free service will carry the aircraft’s exact location (via GPS), along with its heading, speed, and altitude (from the plane’s on-board sensors). This should go a long way towards preventing future planes from going missing — though, sadly, when it comes to Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, there’s still sadly nothing to report after two months and hundreds of millions of dollars of search and rescue efforts.
When flight MH370 disappeared from radar screens just over 90 minutes after lift-off, the only location data available to investigators was the brief handshake “pings” sent between the aircraft and Inmarsat 4-F1, a geosynchronous satellite that sits around 22,000 miles above the Indian Ocean. [The photo above is of the next-generation Inmarsat 5-F1 and F2. Communications satellites are large.] These pings contained no actual data — they were just small packets of data that ascertained whether the plane was still turned on (so-called “keepalive” messages). Your computer or smartphone generates similar messages when it’s connected to a network. Because the plane’s automated reporting system (ACARS) was disabled (we still don’t know why), these wussy satellite pings are all we have to go on. A map showing the location of the Inmarsat satellite that received keepalive pings from MH370, and the plane’s possible radius from that satellite, which led to the current search area in the Indian Ocean [Image credit: Wikipedia]
Obviously, in an ideal world every plane would automatically and reliably report its definitive location — along with its heading, speed, and altitude — every few minutes. And now, Inmarsat is offering exactly that. The cost to Inmarsat will be around $3 million, but it hopes that some airlines will step up to its “premium” reporting packages, offsetting that cost (plus, the company had profits exceeding $230 million last year, so $3 million is a small price to pay for a lot of good will and PR). The company already offers a similar service for ships and boats, which use Inmarsat’s network free of charge for distress signalling. “Our equipment is on 90% of the world’s wide-body jets already. This is an immediate fix for the industry at no cost to the industry,” Inmarsat’s Chris McLaughlin told the BBC.
Beyond Inmarsat’s new service, the last few weeks have also seen proposals to overhaul the hardware specifications of the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR) black boxes. Current regulations stipulate that the boxes must record the last two hours of activity, meaning that data from earlier in the flight is constantly being overwritten. In the case of flight MH370, which continued flying for some seven hours after radio silence, the vital information from the first 90 minutes of the flight will have been overwritten — we will never know what caused the plane to veer erratically off course. As a result, the European Aviation Safety Agency wants to increase that recording time to 20 hours. It also wants to decrease the underwater pinger frequency used by the black boxes (so that it travels farther and is easier to detect), and increase the battery life from 30 days of pinging to 90 days. (The MH370 black boxes have probably already run out of battery, making it much harder to find them on the ocean floor.) MH370 current search area, with ocean floor topography [Image credit: BBC]
As far as the ongoing search for flight MH370, there isn’t a whole lot to report. As of the end of April, we are no longer listening out for the black box pingers or looking for surface wreckage with aerial search teams. The search is now entirely focused on side-scanning sonar of the ocean floor. The USA’s Bluefin-21 autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) completed a side-scan sonar of the original 314-square-kilometer area pinpointed by the pinger locator and found nothing. It has now widened its search area, hoping to find some kind of sonar blip that would indicate a piece of MH370′s debris laying on the ocean floor. Sadly, that’s all we have to go on right now.

Future Trends

...Future Trends Charmaine Saint Surin OI/466 June 6, 2016 Fred Greifenstein Future Trends According to Webster.com dictionary, a trend is usually known as something undergoing change or is developing into something or going into a general or specific direction. Innovation is about timing, but there is not a theory behind it. It includes processes and new ideas and then they are converted into new useful products. It creates value for customers who pay for it. Disruptive Innovation is an all-out risk taker, creating new markets with more practical approaches towards buyer's purchasing power. What we know is that innovation does not have an end, it's the fact that what we want and what we need continues to change. Innovation is not the goal but everything we do to get to that point. I think collaboration within innovation is an revolving trend. This is the concept of an open source. With the internet age, there are so many people connected worldwide, so there is the fact of collaboration. It creates alternatives for companies who which are smaller to have the ability to remain small and agile. If that is the choice, it also allows those less ended businesses to be a part of the larger agenda in innovation. Innovation is a connected function of communities. It seems like we are all trying to come up with new solutions that capture the technologies we encompass and maybe even working with alternatives reworking those technologies. An example of this is universities...

In order for an organization to be successful it is essential that they follow some of these trends so that their company appeals to people. This proves to be true for the event planning and convention industries. Two articles that pinpoint a couple different trends are “Nifty gadgets taking special events to a new level” and “ The article “Nifty gadgets taking special events to a new level” is a great example of trends within the planning and convention industries. In the years 2001-2004 these industries saw a huge decline in business. The reason for this was the failing economy. Companies and organizations could no longer fit events and gatherings into the budget. In 2005 event planning companies such as Dolce parties finally started to see an incline in corporate parties and events. However, these parties and events were at a much smaller scale. It was only the important people that were being invited to these gatherings because the budgets were still not back to where they were. Since the comeback of events was at a slow pace, event planners and convention industries decided to introduce some new gadgets to attract clientele. Business Communication Trends

I use communication every day by helping customers find the products they need as well as interesting them in new products. Communication trends have changed since I first started working but they continue to improve the workplace. At my job I am required to help customers not only find what they need, but also to suggest products that they might be interested in. I communicate with them by speaking and showing them how the products work. Sometimes this requires a lot of demonstration while other times it just requires explaining the product. Flyers and posters are another way I communicate with customers. My job would not be manageable if I was not able to communicate with my customers. Currently we do not offer products online because we are a small business that relies on people coming into the store to purchase our products. However, we are in the process of creating a Facebook page that would allow customers to see what the discounts are at the store and what time the store opens and closes. This will allow customers to see what products we have as well as send messages about what they would like us to start carrying. The business will be able to show customers what is available in the store and why they should come in. This trend will allow the business to expand its merchandise and offer customers...

According to this author, the first strategy, scanning, is to identify the different media outlets, cultural developments and various brands to further investigate how other brands are performing in the market. This will provide insight as to the consumers view and trends toward current brands.
