A manager faces many challenges in motivating their employees now opposed to fifty years ago. Three challenges are diversity, fewer entry-level positions, and more employees longing for motivation. These challenges did not appear in the workforce 50 years ago. Now, managers face both genders, all ethnicities, and different sexual orientations rather than mostly Caucasian males. The second one they face is having minuscule entry-level employees, requiring people with experience that are qualified for the job. The last challenge manager's face is having employees that are in need of constant motivation and incentives. The first challenge a manger has to face is diversity. It's hard for a manager to come up with a motivational technique for everyone. Today's workforce is comprised of different job performance styles that are impacted by gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, and religion. Several challenges are entertwined with diversity. These variables affect how the manager interacts with his or her employees. For example, communication is one area that is hugely impacted by diversity and cultural differences. Communicating tasks to a diverse workforce can prove to be more difficult due to socioeconomic or even linguistic challenges such as a heavy accent. If a manager does not pay attention to cultural nuances when doing business, huge misunderstandings can occur. Communication will suffer and the employees' morale will as well. Conflict between employees can also occur due to cultural differences. Employees should see how hard it truly is for a manager to cooperate with a wide range of diversified people. The second challenge manager's face is having fewer entry-level positions available. When applying to go into the workforce, it is a lot more difficult to get a job. For the companies that require past experience workers, they lose out on teaching them their way of doing things. This will make things a lot tougher for a manager because they now have their own way of doing their work and it's hard for people to adjust to the new ways of working. It's also hard to motivate these qualified individuals because now, the manager has to motive them to pursue a higher level of employment when they just started. When a manager and their employee are not on the same page, it's hard to get things going correctly. Lastly, employees are in need of motivation and incentives. Today, people will find a new job if they feel they are not being treated appropriately. Workers now want more raises and bonuses along with constant compliments from their managers. For example, if there was a big assignment completed and the manager congratulates everyone as a group, some people might feel offended that they weren’t rewarded for their duties. If the manager has a large company to run, it's hard to focus on individuals when everyone feels the same way. People now know exactly want they want, and if they are not understanding it, they will leave. In conclusion, it is much more difficult for a manager to motivate an employee today rather than 50 years ago. With a high range of diversity, fewer entry-level positions available, and people longing for more motivation and incentives, it's nearly impossible for a manager to motivate their employees as well as fifty years ago. These challenges can be overcome, but it is very difficult for a manager to do in today’s times.
