...Foreign Literature The career factors used by Richardson (2009) are similar to the pre- and post-entry Expectations examined by Blomme et al. (2009). Blomme et al. found distinct differences in expectations of job content, development opportunities, work-family balance, salary, Performance-related pay and career opportunities. The authors argue discrepancies in what employees expect in the industry and actually experience may lead to negative consequences, such as turnover Richardson (2009) received completed surveys from 379 tourism and hospitality students (25% response) in Australia to measure perceptions of the hospitality industry. The author examined differences between importance and expectations of students on 20 career factors. The authors found discrepancies between what students perceived as important and what they expected in a hospitality career. Richardson concluded hospitality and tourism students do not expect the hospitality and tourism industries to offer them the career factors they feel are important. In addition, the author noted tourism and hospitality students do not have a clear idea of careers and working conditions in the hospitality industry. A study carried out by Chen (2000) which analysed the perceptions of tourism students’ toward work values concluded that one particular group of students categorized as “income movers” expressed a reduced desire to work in the industry due to poor earnings potential. ...Week 4 Career Plan: Culture Preferences After completing the “Work Culture” preferences, I was not surprised by the results. It stated that I like working with a team of close knit people who are independent and supportive, having great ideas and being the “go to person” is my strong point because I enjoy being in control of my schedule and assignments. It also stated that I need a comfortable place to work that is safe and has all of the necessary resources to do my job. In general this description fits who I think I am as an employee as well as a leader. Completion of the Career Interest Profiler and the Competencies exercise was helpful in my search to determine what I needed to work on. Career interest profiler simplifies what career would be best suited for you by how you answer the questions asked. Within the competencies, I found that I have a lot of strength in team building. After completing both of those I found it easier to make a decision to stay with my original career path in entrepreneurship. I will focus on the business administration aspect, later venturing into human resource management. This will allow me opportunity to do all that my work culture results outlined. The work culture preferences were very similar to my personal competency results from week two of the course. In week two, after finishing the personal competency exercise, I learned that I am on the right path. The competency test stated that I was well organized, enjoyed being...

...Globalization and child labor are the two perimeters that are often linked together. Since globalization opens up new jobs in poor countries, as the foreign competitors strive to minimize their costs of production, many argue that this creates countless opportunities for the exploitation of children. Harsh working conditions, subjection to near-slavery, and even physically abusive treatment are some of the taglines that have made globalization into even a more controversial issue. However, as a byproduct of poverty, child labor has been long-standing and not exclusively caused by globalization. Faced with newly available jobs, the decision whether children will enter the workforce or acquire education is solely made by their parents. Hence, the reality is that the preferences of parents are the main determinants of the outcome. According to Jagdish Bhagwati, the author of In Defense of Globalization, “poor parents, no less than rich parents, generally want the best for their children” (Bhagwati, 69). The claim that follows is that these types of parents will most likely put their children back in school rather than send them to work. As new jobs provide higher salaries, parents can feed the entire family and sustain normal living without the help of their children. Extra income that they now earn compensates for the earnings from the children’s work. Parents who highly value the goodwill of their children will also prefer education because their children will enjoy numerous...

Based on over one-hundred questions given that narrow down what I would like in an ideal job setting, I had only the choices of not at all or more likely. I’m excited to find the work culture preference results returned that being ethical was the first of the three qualities it defined me as. Emphasis on fairness and equal rights has always been important to me, I believe that my timed served in the Navy is a reinforcing factor in that you should not segregate by gender, ethnicity or cultures. But it is not simply choosing, there are some factors associated why people choose one above other. ...presentation. Kotler (1973) claims that atmospheric aspect of the store has often been given less importance because managers usually tend to focus more on practical and operational aspects. He also maintained that designing the store area to induce desired cognitive and emotional feelings in the customer is not an easy job. A number of researches have proposed a dependency of satisfaction level and purchase behaviour of the customers on the environment of the store (Donovan et al., 1994). However, the existing literature regarding influence of the entire setting of the store/outlet on the emotional reaction of the customers and their approach to purchase and loyalty, when all components of the store environment traditionally identified by music, lighting, colour, smell, temperature, decorative, etc. come into play together, is limited. Problem Statement: Theoretical frameworks to adequately determine the effect of surrounding or store ambiance in consumer behaviour are lacking which leads managers to depend on their intuitions while designing the store area. This leads to a selection of specific design without knowing the effect of that design on consumer preference. Such selections...

...March 25th, 2014 Mrs. Carr BCOM 275 Work Culture Preference It’s all about being around different work situations that help you determine which work cultures you do best in and which ones may not work as well. It is obviously good to be in a safe place to work and be comfortable but it is also good to be helpful in all the ways in which your business expects. I also learned that it is good to put more emphasis on subjects that matter in any career and with more engagement these will encourage you to do much better and be more creative and dynamic in different work conditions. I think this also helps me tremendously organize my communication strategies and how I influence a group of people or team type atmosphere. I really like to make others see that their job choice is the right one and that if you work together you can all be leaders in your own ways and have the jobs that you want in any type of condition you choose to put yourself in. I like to think of every job I get as an opportunity to do something important for people and have the opportunities to show that I can be a very important and strong influence on my fellow workers and team mates. Another reason I felt that this was so important is because it shows you what you have to be to succeed at other jobs and what it takes to keep your organization at a professional level and so really you never slack at what you do. Very important to take this work culture preference resource because I have a better picture of what...

...given class of situation, an individual will choose their preferred way of gathering, processing and evaluating information (Hayes & Allinson 1998). The style is a better predictor of “job behaviour than intelligence” (Sadler-Smith & Badger 1998, p. 248), as it is not measurable in term of aptitude of handling. Learning Style Learning styles are several ways or methods that help individuals to learn and gain knowledge. Unlike personal style, it is often expressed in the way individuals select one particular mode of learning over another, e.g. I simply don't like training but I greatly prefer coaching (Sadler-Smith 1996). There are several studies on how individuals can identify their best learning style. In Kolb's (1984) experiential learning model, there are four different styles of learning identified – “accommodative, divergent, assimilative and convergent” (Mullins 2007, p. 191). “Individuals may have a preference for one of the key stages and therein lies their learning style” (Mullins 2007, p. 190). Seen this way, managers' learning styles can be assessed based on their approach to acquire and apply knowledge through practice. In a recursive learning cycle, individual can spot and strengthen their “weaker preferences” by adapting to various teaching styles, while strengths can also enhance learning outcome (McCarthy 2010, p. 136). Honey and Mumford (1992) developed their learning style questionnaire...

...Work Culture Preferences Marcia P. Smith BCOM/275 June 24, 2014 Jacqueline Gray-Crawford Work Culture Preferences My results of the Career Activity’s Work Culture Preferences survey showed that I prefer high powered, demanding jobs that are well-resourced and have a professionally ethical environment. These results tell me a lot about how I should communicate and what channels I should use to achieve effective communication. Presently I prefer to communicate via meetings and telephone conversations, but my survey results reveal that I will need to transition to faster more effective ways if I want to operate at the highest level of efficiency. In high-powered work situations, time restraints are real and the way in which we communicate in these situations are very different from the way we communicate when time is not “of the essence”. Knowing that my work culture preference is a time-restraining, fast career advancement environment will now force me to rely on the fastest channels available to relay my messages. Communicating using channels like cellular phones, emails, teleconferencing and texting will prove most effective for me in my ideal work environment. To successfully work within my time limits, I will not be able to attend or schedule many face-to-face meetings, do much travelling for conferences or meetings nor use paper based correspondences as these channels require more time. My results disclose something else about my messages – the quality of them will...
