Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder, common among veterans, that occurs as a delay or "protracted reaction" to an individual's exposure to a traumatic event or experience (USDVA, 2017). Chronic PTSD is associated with the left superior parietal lobule's ability to receive sensory and visual input (Bergland, 2005). Closely linked to PTSD, DID is a controversial disorder not recognized as a psychological disorder by the Mental Health Association (MHA). Associated with amnesia due to the possible origin of the scoundrel character, his lack of memory to who his original identity is could conclude him to choose another persona. "DID involves the loss of integration between past and present perception, memory and self-awareness, and the loss of some bodily functions" (Manning, 2009). These alters each take turns at controlling the person's behavior, leading to memory gaps between these shifts (Manning, 2009).
