In the essay "Joyas Volardoras," Brian Doyle focuses on how a heart is mesmerizing in various ways. He uses the hummingbird's heart to describe how small a heart could be so powerful and other examples of hearts to show what it could endure. He mainly tells us with shifts and changes of tone, imagery and sensory being used to convey his message across. Doyle shifts his tone when he writes," ... Mammals and birds have hearts with four chambers" he gave examples of animals because he wants readers to think deeply about what animals could go through like the hummingbird. He also shifts his tone from talking about animal hearts more than hearts in general like when he mentions, " So much held in a heart in a lifetime.", and other examples of what human heart endures.
Doyle creates an image with his words, and he also makes sure the word he uses is very crucial for it the story. He uses a lot of adjectives, which make it wordy. For example, in the final paragraph, he is transitioning from animals to humans. He makes the pace equal to the pace of a human heart beat. Then he uses real sayings that connect with a human being's heart to make people truly think about these occurrences in your lifetime. What's more, he gives a bunch of background information to the mammals and birds. However, when he transitions to the human heart, he doesn't give as much background as the mammals and birds. He just goes straight to the feeling we can receive as human from the heart.
