Kaitlyn (16), is a popular high school girl who is becoming more independent and growing annoyed with her brother. Danny (10) is an inquiring and clingy child; he looks up to his sister and loves spending time with her. After getting out for spring break, they travel to their grandparents house; a trip they both enjoyed in years gone by, however, now Kaitlyn feels as though her time could be better spent elsewhere, especially apart from her brother.
They arrive at their grandparents’ farm very late, greet their grandparents and get to bed, both exhausted from the long day. They wake the next morning to the sound of pounding rain and thunder. Kaitlyn fights back tears as she listens to these stories, knowing things are going are not getting easier; she wants to be home, and she knows she doesn’t belong here. Nonetheless, Danny is very excited, this is what he has dreamed of. Azrael and Kahleah volunteer to go with them as they set out to find the sacred gem to reanimate the lifeless gargoyles.
As they set off on their journey the royal family gives Kaitlyn a small piece of enchanted chalk, explaining it will allow them to open a door back to the castle once they have retrieved the gem, moreover, it can only be used to take them somewhere they have previously been. Kaitlyn takes the chalk, beginning to understand she must push forward not only for herself but her brother as well.
