Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Pablo Picasso, 1907 Primitivism. What is it? Primitivism is when those of one culture try to imitate that of another ‘simpler’ culture in their creative works. This becomes important in modern art for artist were looking for something different, artists wanted to be different. Many visited other countries to have the area influence their art although many were just there to influence their own art not appreciate the culture for that of itself. Braque’s The Portuguese is so put together like a city, while Kandinsky's piece is loud and forceful. The way these pieces differ is shown in everything you look at in the two pieces. Braque is expressive through uniformed lines, shapes, and an earth, sepia palette. It’s very industrial, steampunk-esce; expressive of a ‘new’ developing city. Kandinsky throws out any rules Braque is trying to place with The Portuguese. Kandinsky paints with more feeling than the calculating scape of a city that Braque implies. Kandinsky was one of the first artists to paint with music and it shows. I don’t know what he was listening to when he painted this piece reminds me of a whole song paint over and around this canvas at various points. In a way you can place them in a similar abstraction though; Braque’s piece physically implies a city, Kandinsky shows us more of what it is like to feel anxious in a city. He shows us the large sounds and how it comes from everywhere and grows. Composition VII looks literally like a panic attack building and growing in a plaza where many people are. This may just be my interpretation but it’s how it makes me feel whether he intended this sort of interpretation I do not
