Kiki Smith’s artwork Match Girl uses many elements of art and principles of design used together on this one artwork that makes it come alive such as focal points, contrast, various lines, the dark color of her skin, and light-to-dark values. Focal point on the figures face was established by how much larger and brighter it is than the rest of the girl’s figure along with how her big white eyeballs contrasted with the rest of the dark colored figure in the artwork to draw attention to the girl’s sad emotional face and seemingly puffy eyes. Kiki Smith’s cultural and historical background influenced all of the components in this artwork are how she was raised Catholic and with a father who was a sculptor who let her help him with some of his cardboard works gave her an early taste for use of the components of art. With the artistic experience made with her father and being a Catholic woman in the 1950s meant that she was expected to grow up and become a caregiver caring for her husband and children. But through art she could express how she thought and felt about social equality for the sexes.
3.) Also by looking at this painting one can conclude that she believed people or women to be fragile creatures but armed with some form of inner strength that strengthen them. Like how a single traveler wandering the desert can be given hope by the sight of an oasis. 4.) Kiki Smith used techniques in this art work similar to or the same as other artists but not all of the techniques she used are used on other artworks down to the line and color techniques.
