Irony means to see the opposite meaning in a situation or character, in a way it is similar to sarcasm. Philbrick called the tenements testaments. This is ironic because tenements are usually run down slums and testaments are full of lessons about morals and the hope of eternal life. The irony in this is that the bible is hopeful and full of morals, while the tenements are run down and often house people who have lost hope.

Philbrick used repetition to set up how strong “Killer Kane” was and it also set up for someone to stop “Killer Kane”, therefore Philbrick’s repetition creates some foreshadowing.
When freak says that “You don’t need a time machine if you know how to remember” (142). In this sentence Philbrick means that you don’t need a time machine to review history, all you really need is an education about history and some imagination.
The theme of Freak the Mighty is that everyone has strengths and weaknesses despite differences. This is showed in chapter 22 when Kevin gets his birthday present, “He’s showing Grim how to play 3-D chess, and just watching that makes me dizzy, so after a while I go out to the kitchen and help clean up, which is something I’m good at” (145).
