17 November 2013 Criminal Justice major
Criminal Justice is an academic field as well as job field that is never dull. Secondly, if naturally one likes helping others and have great patience and communication skills, whether as a police officer, probation/parole officer, child protective services worker, etc. a criminal justice degree is one possible degree for one. If ones wants a job to where they aren’t at a desk all day, and their moving around constantly talking to different kinds of people, Criminal Justice is a good field to enter. The money isn't as good as some other fields, but the field is definitely one of the more interesting and exciting ones.
Growing up, every child wanted to be a police officer or something dealing with the Police enforcement. I was one of those children who played cops with all of their siblings and overall just loved policemen. As i grew older, things began to change because I started to notice the dirt that cops can do and also the good in police enforcement. Through personal experiences with my family, and also myself i grew to hate policemen and their work. This only began to motivate me to do the right thing in my community which is help someone in need. I began getting involved in as many programs as i could that would get me one step closer to living my dream. I feel that I am a step closer now than i ever was. I am not majoring in Criminal Justice to become a police officer anymore, I am now wanting to pursue a career of becoming a police detective which is a little more advanced than just an officer.
Majoring in Criminal Justice seemed to be so perfect as i viewed others on television undertake this career. I was greatly influenced by the television show Criminal Minds, which is a fictional show about crime scene investigators catching murders. So, i decided to major in Criminal Justice, I’ve always wanted to become a crime scene investigator. I chose this particular major because i would like to go out in communities and help families receive some type of support. Helping someone is always a good deed so i figured why not go out and try it. I actually want to be a police detective which is similar to crime scene investigators in a way. A police detective works with the police department in many different ways such as conducting interviews, and arresting suspects. I am very strengthening in communication. I have a great deal of communication skills that will definitely help me in this career. Becoming a police detective you must know how to communicate with different sorts of people because not everyone that you have an encounter with is going to be intelligent. While there are many skills needed to pursue this career I will need extra help in some areas. I am nothing for being a social worker to someone when they need it. Social perceptiveness is one of the acquired skills used in police detectives work. Grasping onto learning this will not be very difficult to me but i will need some improvement. I haven’t been so good at multitasking throughout my years neither. Police detectives have to multitask, going back and forth from computers searching up information to talking to other to convey the information effectively.
Going into this field of work I believe I can bring a lot to the table. I always thought that there shouldn’t be anyone working in the criminal justice field that is a crook, and I have come to realization that there’s many crooks. I want to not only set out to help families, but to also help get rid of the ones that are successful in there career but are doing it for all of the wrong reasons. This career should be taken seriously and not everyone is taking it seriously. I can and will make contributions to this field that will forever be remembered.
My love for working with a police department is at an all time. I also want to look into crime scene investigation. Prior to becoming a criminal justice major I was studying forensic science. I was confused on whether I wanted to be on the scene of the investigation or in the office helping solve the investigation. Forensic Science is way more detailed than Criminal Justice, not that its any harder but for my preferences I chose to stick with Criminal Justice because its way more interesting things to do besides working crimes. With Criminal Justice, you can just about doing anything such as paralegal studies, criminology, or social worker. When you choose a career in criminal justice, you are opening the door to many other career possibilities down the road. Once you gain experience working in corrections or law enforcement, if you want to change careers, you likely will find that opportunities abound for a person with your experience. Companies and public institutions will view you as trustworthy and will value your experience working with difficult people. Some hiring officers believe that if you can handle the stress of a job in the criminal justice field, you can handle anything.
I plan on graduating with a BS in Criminal Justice and maybe a forensic concentration. I also would like to move away from Louisiana and become a great help to the FBI. Even though, some folks seem to think chances of that happening are very slim. I am aware that it takes a lot of hard work and time to get where I’m going but I’m willing to do whatever it takes. My head is tight on my shoulders and with a little motivation I can be great at it. I have faith in this career that I chose for a reason and I’m sticking to it. I plan on becoming a very successful detective and hopefully my children will grow up one day and take on this great major as well.
