Introduction Your assignment task for this semester will be to design and build a web site that demonstrates your understanding of the principles of good web site design and implementation. Your client wants to have a site to provide information to grade 7 students in Australia about mammals of Tasmania. You may choose five (5) different mammals and provide relevant information to each. The client would like to see a creative and amusing site to stimulate students to explore more in the topic area. Scientific knowledge as well as understanding of nature that lead into loving and caring attitude towards environment will be the outcomes of the site. The selected topic site needs to be designed and prototyped in this assignment.
Due Date Due date: Tuesday 29th October 3pm Submissions will be done in paper form and electronically through a folder on your network drive in the computer labs (see below for more details of the submission method). Late Submissions • Late assignments will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances and provided that the proper procedures have been followed (see the School Office or the CIS web site for details). Assignments that are submitted late without good reason will be subject to mark penalties if they are accepted at all (see School office or web site for details on this as well). • Forms to request extensions of time to submit assignments are available from the School of Computing office. Requests must be accompanied by suitable documentation and should be submitted before the assignment due date
Assignment Task Your assignment will be an overall plan for the web site and a working prototype of the site. You must submit all of the following deliverables by the due date. The website that you are to produce for this assignment is required to have the following features:

1. Text Documentation ·∙
An assignment cover sheet (available from the School office and on the School web site) that includes a signed statement declaring that the submission is your own work ·∙
A design document – this must contain: A list of the subsections of the site (there must be at least 5 of these) and a brief statement about the kind of information that will be found in each of these subsections. A sketch (may be hand drawn) of the form of navigation that you intend to use for this site. A sketch (may be hand drawn) of the screen layout(s) that you intend to use for the pages of this site. 2. A prototype web site. NOTE: This must be written in the strict version of XHTML and must be able to be displayed using any standard web browser. This prototype should contain: A main page (named index.html) This page must include: One link with a statement of the web site and a brief description of the purpose of the site including mission statements. Another link with a brief statement about the intended audience for this site and any special requirements that they might have. A discussion of the reasons for your design choices (especially layout and colour). A list of the resources that you intend to use in the site (see below for details of the resources you are permitted to use). Note that you do not need to have these resources incorporated in your prototype site yet – this is the list of resources that you plan to use in the fully implemented site. Links to separate pages for each of the sub sections of the site (remember that there must be at least four (4) more of these, 5 in total + main page). One for each of the subsections of the site, with links back to the main page. These pages need not contain any content (other than a return link), but should have a title and some simple text information about the subsection. The site needs to have TWO(2) style sheets that are distinctively designed and linked to each page and include style rules that determine the appearance of the site. Not all of the necessary style rules need to be implemented at this stage, but you must not include in your html code any tags or attributes that directly alter the appearance of the page.

If you want to use your own photos/images, that is fine, but you are required to state their origins clearly. Also when you use images from freely available resources, make sure you state it in the assignment. Please remember copyright issues. This prototype should be validated.

Submission Details (This should be confirmed by the Lecturer in SOU) Written Component Launceston students should submit their individual assignment cover sheet and report, stapled together, and placed in the relevant assignment submission box outside the Help Desk prior to the assignment deadline. Hobart students should submit their individual assignment cover sheet and report, stapled together, and placed in the relevant assignment submission box near the School Office prior to the assignment deadline. Electronic Component It is vital that you follow these instructions when submitting your assignment. If you fail to submit your assignment correctly, it will be deemed to have been not submitted. ·∙
Important note – keep a backup copy of your submitted assignment! The prototype of your web site will be submitted electronically into the submission folder that will be established on the School’s file servers at Hobart and Launceston. The lecturer will disable the main drop-‐box after the submission deadline, and a "late assignment" drop box will be opened. Late assignments will have their marks reduced according to School policy unless an alternative due date is granted. 1.
Place all the required files and folders in a folder on the Desktop. The folder name should be your user name. 2.
Mount your lawson (Launceston Students) or your alacritas directory (Hobart Students). ·∙
From the Finder, select the “Go -‐> Connect to Server…” menu item. ·∙
Type in: smb://lawson/your-‐username
(Launceston) OR smb://alacritas/your-‐username
(Hobart) ·∙
Click on the “Connect” button. ·∙
Type in your lawson/alacritas password into the password field and click the “OK” button. ·∙
You should be presented with a “SMB Mount” dialog box. Make sure that you select the share that is named the same as your account name and click the “OK” button. ·∙
The share mounts and a network share icon is displayed on your desktop. A finder window should also be opened displaying the contents of your lawson/alacritas home directory.

Drag your assignment folder located on the Desktop over the top of the kxx133submit folder. ·∙
The mouse pointer should have a green “plus” icon attached to it. Let go of the mouse and your assignment folder will be copied to your submission folder. Resources The resources that you use for this site are as follows: Any text that you write yourself, if you use text from other sources (books, websites etc) you must include information about the source. Any images that you create yourself. The only other images that can be used are: Any images found on the site http://www.freeimages.co.uk/ or similar sites. Images that you use from this site must be attributed in the way required by the site. Important Information All assessment will be carried out using the same versions of FireFox/Safari on MacOS X as the lab environment. Other browsers and platforms may be used for practice or developing your submission, however it is your responsibility to ensure that the final appearance and functionality are compatible with the assessment platform. Plagiarism and Cheating: Plagiarism, which is a form of cheating, occurs if you claim work as your own when it is substantially the work of someone else. Cheating is an offence under the Ordinance of Student Discipline within the University. Furthermore, the computing profession has ethical standards in which cheating has no place. Cheating involving two or more parties -‐ If you allow written work or your code (in printed or electronic form) to be borrowed or copied by another student you are an equal partner in the act of cheating. You should be careful to ensure that your work is not left in a situation where it may be stolen by others. Where there is a reasonable cause to believe that a case of cheating has occurred, this will be brought to the attention of the unit lecturer. If the lecturer considers that there is evidence of cheating, then no marks will be given to any of the students involved. The case will be referred to the Head of School for consideration and further action.
