...Different leadership styles used in the public services - P1 Abbie Wood In this assignment I will be writing about all the different leadership styles which are used in the public services and everyday life: Authoritarian – This is a direct leadership style where the leader gives clear instructions for what needs to be completed. It is a style where the leader maintains power/order. The leader makes decisions on their own (independently) and no one in the rest of the group has a say or has an opinion. This leadership style would normally be used by an officer in the army, like Hitler, this is because they normally generally are loud and bossy also, this leadership style helps to motivate teams. They think that they are always right (which in most cases they normally are) and that they’re way is the best way. This type of leadership style could be used in a situation where the/a team needs to do something fast and successfully (For example – on the battlefield, if a team is under fire the leader shouts instructions and the team (unit) must respond quickly because everyone in that groups life’s are on the line). This style however wouldn’t work effectively in a situation where a group needs to plan something because only the leader (‘boss’) has a say and therefore some members of the group might not listen and do their own thing or they wouldn’t pay attention and maybe won’t have a clue what they need to do. This leadership style is similar to the ‘task orientated’ style because...

...MGMT-6000 Final Exam Question #1 The coaching staff at the newly racially integrated T.C. Williams high school was one that was assembled from different schools in segregated communities. Upon receiving their coaching positions, they did not yet have a unified culture of beliefs, assumptions, or feelings because they didn’t know each other and had not worked together. Coach Boone’s values were clear from the beginning; race was not to be considered. Those who work hard enough and do what is expected will play football. Those who do not, will sit on the bench. The same was expected from the coaching staff; if they did not want to be there, they were free to go. Coach Boone was fine finding another staff member who was willing to fill the role. He displayed his values at all times to the coaching staff and the players and never swerved from that standard. Coach Yoast’s values were not so consistent. He started the movie angry that he had proven himself as a winning coach over the years yet didn’t get the head coaching position. To add to this, he had lost the head coaching position to a black man who offered Yoast a position as the defensive coordinator. Yoast expressed frustration about working under the newly appointed black head coach but Boone made it clear that they would be alongside each other. Yoast’s original plans were to quit to find a coaching position at another school, but his loyalty to his players, many of whom he had coached since they were little...

...Leadership Development. In this essay, I am going to look at my leadership skills through my roles as charge nurse in the Surgical Services Department and my cross training as a House Supervisor. I feel my strengths are communication, flexibility, encouraging teamwork and staff motivation. Skills of leadership are many and vary from one person to another. Leadership development is essential for an individual’s growth as well as company's success. First, communication, which is an effective tool in leadership as it enables staff to learn what is expected of them by their manager/supervisor and can work towards it. Furthermore, communication enables one to identify the problems facing people he or she is leading and, therefore, creates a conducive work environment. Secondly, I am flexible to the needs of the House Supervisors and the Surgical Services Department. I assess situations and set short terms goals based on required changes in the immediate environment. I assure that these goals are pursued in a systematic manner, that they are clear, achievable and met with minimal struggle. This could be as simple as covering the schedule for a House Supervisor who needs to be off. Or a need for additional staffing in the Surgical Services Department, where I will staff to cover the need and assist until the crisis is over. Teamwork is my third strength. Encouraging teamwork and offering praise for a job well done is a professional way of doing things. Assuming this...

Team members seem to always lay blame on other members. Leadership needs to convey that teamwork is a must, and this should be a sustainable teamwork approach to help ensure no further loss in the business. Team Dysfunctions The Chattanooga Ice Cream Team is dysfunctional for several reasons. Some of those reasons are related to the team members themselves, and others are related to the leadership. ...HR Update - Importance of Teamwork Whether in the workplace or on the football field, or even amongst members of a community, effective teamwork can produce incredible results. However, working successfully as a team is not as easy as it may seem. Effective teamwork certainly does not just happen automatically; it takes a great deal of hard work and compromise. There are a number of factors that must be in place to cohere together as a team and work seamlessly. • Good leadership: Effective leadership is one of the most important components of good teamwork. The team’s leader should possess the skills to create and maintain a positive working environment and motivate and inspire the team members to take a positive approach to work and be highly committed. An effective team leader will promote a high level of morale and make them feel supported and valued. • Clear communication: Communication is a vital factor of all interpersonal interaction and especially that of a team. Team members must be able to articulate their feelings, express plans and goals, share ideas and see each other’s viewpoints. • Establishing roles: It is absolutely necessary for team members to understand what their role on the team is, what he/she is responsible for. The team leader can enable this by defining the purpose in a clear-cut manner in the beginning of the formation of the team. • Conflict Resolution: Conflicts will arise no matter how well a team functions together. The best way...

...order to fulfill the purpose and functions of operational leadership within his or her area, a first-line leader would be highly well-informed and skillful at his or her tasks, which would invariably motivate assistants to follow this example. The first-line leader would also make a sincere effort to give 100% at all times, as well as to continuously seek methods to make his or her assistants feel involved and knowledgeable about what is going on within the facility. To implement the operational infrastructure, first-line leaders returns conceptually to the basic contribution of the organization, fulfilling needs that the stakeholders cannot fulfill by themselves, and improves the processes for reaching decisions rather than focusing on the decisions themselves. When these processes are aligned, the chances of correct decisions those that optimize the long run contribution to the mission are maximized. The operational topics that I would include in a training program for new leaders are rhetoric and composition, intro to business information systems, effective speech, financial and managerial accounting for decision making, and elementary statistics. This has examined the influence of front-line managers' characteristics and scope of responsibility on teamwork. Scope of responsibility considers the breadth of the manager's...

...Leadership skills Leadership means different things to different people everywhere in the world but Yukl.G (2013) explains that leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. In line with this definition Kotter.J (1999) mentioned that leadership is a progression of social inspiration in which a person can procure the aid and support of others in the achievement of a common task. Drawing from the above definitions Northhouse.P (2013) highlights that both definitions on leadership lay emphasize on the importance of inspiration and preparation, although effective leadership is centered on ideas which would not materialize except this ides can be communicated to others effectively in a way that involves them. Gill.R (2006) explains that when leadership or the people in control do not have the appropriate leadership skills there is a drop down effect through the rest of the organization, which can negatively impact the general contentment, success, competence, and productivity of firm, group or team. For example the movie Remember the Titans (2000), were Julius claims that his altitude it’s a reflection on his captain Bertie. As the movie advances, Bertier changes his attitude and leads by example. This simple behavioral change unites an entire team, and changes the ways and attitudes on every level. Although this was a movie, I learnt that it is important for us to understand that as a leader devising an optimistic and high held altitude...

Thus successful group dynamics in terms of co-operation and collaboration are essential to the achievements of the company’s objectives. Over the years, teams and teamwork have replaced groups in much of the literature as it highlights a greater synergy than the connotations of an arbitrary group. “A team consists of two or more individuals who must interact to achieve one or more common goals that are directed toward the accomplishment of a productive outcome(s).” “Teamwork has traditionally been described in terms of classical systems theory in which team inputs, team processes, and team outputs are arrayed over time. Here, team inputs include the characteristics of the task to be performed, the elements of the context in which teamwork occurs, and the attitudes team members bring to a team situation. Team process includes the interaction and coordination among members required for performing team tasks and achieving specific goals. Team outputs consist of the products that result from team performance. With regard to teamwork, the process phase is the defining point at which teamwork occurs; it is during this...
