You need to describe and explain four qualities, four characteristics and four roles of an effective sports leader (P1 & M1):

Complete the tables below ensuring you use examples of famous sports leaders.

Select a quality (#1): Knowledge of sports skill | Describe the meaning of this quality? (P1)Having an extensive knowledge and understanding of your chosen sport, often a coach has to have a better knowledge of skill then the players he is coaching so players will be able to learn from the coach, also it is being able to understand all the skills needed for the chosen sport so players have a better chance of increasing their skill level and ultimately winning. | Explain how a sports leader would meet this quality and why it is important for successful leaders to possess it? (M1)A sports leader would meet this quality by attending coaching courses which would provide the leader with training drills and an understanding of tactics which would help to get the best out of players, a coaching course is an ideal way to gain a knowledge of sports skill because often the course mentors will be very experienced and their skills will be passed down to you so you can then pass down the knowledge of skills you have learnt down to your players. A sports leader would also gain a knowledge of sports skill if they have played at a high level during their career because they would have been coached by the best coaches so the coaches knowledge would of been passed down to that player, also if a leader has played at a high level they would know what sort of mental and physical skill is required to improve and win. A sports leader would meet this skill if he is respected, respect is a must because if a sports leader is not respected then the players will not be likely to take on the leaders information that he is passing down so they are then unlikely to improve as players. | Example (P1 & M1): An example of a sports leader fulfilling this quality is Roy Hodgson, the football manager of England. Roy Hodgson has fulfilled this quality because recently England's team have been full of youngsters and they have managed to beat big teams such as Italy. Roy Hodgson is known to always be on the training ground as much as he can and he is always seen verbally communicating with all of his players passing down his knowledge of skill from past experience of being one of the worlds beast coaches. One of the best examples of Roy Hodgson fulfilling this quality was the influence he had on football over in Sweden. Roy passed down his knowledge of sports skill to not only one team in Sweden but the whole of Swedish football, he introduced a whole new format of defending called 'zonal marking' a format which was unknown to all Swedish players and soon after nearly all professional clubs in Sweden were using this style of defending as it was more effective than man marking. Roy Hodgson also taught the Swedish teams to counter attack by playing long passes behind the oppositions defence, Roy also taught the defence to press hard and maintain a high offside line . Roy Hodgson has gained his knowledge of sports skill as he has played at a high level as a youngster before attending coaching courses, Roy has managed 17 clubs in his managerial career and has gained endless amounts of experience which he has passed down to young players and also older players such as Steven Gerrard. Roy Hodgson is the perfect example of someone who has a knowledge of sports skill. |

| | | | | | | | | | | | Select a quality (#2): Knowledge of rules and laws | Describe the meaning of this quality? (P1)Knowing the rules of the game inside out, rules are things we must abide by and they guide us to safe participation and are there for our own safety, rules can also be bent to gain an advanatage. | Explain how a sports leader would meet this quality and why it is important for successful leaders to possess it? (M1)A sports leader would meet this quality by researching rules and laws of the chosen game, also being a referee is an excellent way to meet this quality as they have to know all the laws of the game. watching games is also a way to learn knowledge of the rules and laws of that sport as you can see firsthand the rules of the game in a real game situation. | Example (P1 & M1): An example of a sports leader fulfilling this quality is David Elleray Retired premier league and FIFA referee he is also the president of the Referees Association. when David was 13 he began refereeing football games for extra pocket money and he has been a referee for 36 years before retiring in 2003. David has officiated in 35 different countries and has refereed 78 international matches. David is a good sports leader because post retirement he became president of the Referee's Association which cares for young referee's and David regularly speaks at meetings passing down his Knowledge of the rules and laws of football. Another example of David Elleray passing down his knowledge of rules and laws is that as of 2004 he has Became a FIFA and UEFA referee assessor who assessed the referee's and gave them tips and knowledge to help them become some of the best referees in the world. David has gained all of his knowledge of rules and laws by officiating and has gained experience by officiating more and more matches and at the highest level possible and because he passes his knowledge down to young referees by assessing them and speaking at conferences he is therefore an ideal example of a sports leader that fits this category. |

Select a quality (#3): Understanding the mental needs of participation. | Describe the meaning of this quality? (P1)Research suggests that 80% of a football game is played in the head. being able to motivate players to help get the best out of them and the best results is key to understanding the mental needs. also knowing when to shout at players and when to give them a pick me up is also understanding the mental needs of participation. | Explain how a sports leader would meet this quality and why it is important for successful leaders to possess it? (M1)A sports leader would meet this quality by often knowing his players on a personal basis so they would know what sort of motivation really gets that player pumped up whether it be saying you've done poor, something about family, shouting, giving them a shoulder to cry on even what sort of music you put on in the changing rooms. Also watching players in training and games and seeing how they re act to mistakes such as a bad tackle or giving the ball away and they may need to be motivated again by swearing at them or saying 'it's alright, next time do better' | Example (P1 & M1): An example of a sports leader fulfilling this quality is Sir Alex Fergueson the manager of Manchester united when Manchester United was losing 2-0 to Tottenham at half time, Sir Alex gave the whole dressing room the hairdryer treatment and shouted at every single one of them and in the second half they completely turned their performance around and they were fantastic and although they lost 3-2 they thoroughly deserved to win the fixture. Also Sir Alex knows all of his squad players very closely and he knows exactly what motivates them and de-motivates them as individuals and also as a team. for example, in the past when Manchester united have been doing poor Sir Alex has motivated his players by giving them an individual team talk and man motivating instead of team motivating and this technique has worked for him in the past. Also Sir Alex often arranges team spa days to motivate and relax players for big games and this is one of the ways he understands the mental needs of participation to get the best out of his players. Because Sir Alex is one of the longest manager to hold down a job at any one club he will know the team inside out and he is one of the few managers who does know his players inside out which is why he is the perfect example of somebody who understands the mental needs of participation because he knows exactly how to motivate his players. |

Select a quality (#4): Understanding the physical needs of participation | Describe the meaning of this quality? (P1)Every sport has some sort of physical demand, research suggests that 20% of the game is physical and 80% mental. However a coach must be able to train his players so that they are at peak fitness for big games in order to get wins. | Explain how a sports leader would meet this quality and why it is important for successful leaders to possess it? (M1)A sports leader would get the best out of his players physically by giving them their own individual training schedule to ensure they work on skills that need improving before game days. Also a leader would meet this quality by knowing his players on a personal basis so they would know what sort of training to do to get the best out of players. | Example (P1 & M1): An example of a sports leader fulfilling this quality is Harry Redknapp the manager of Tottenham Hotspur. Harry fulfilled understanding the physical needs of participation as one of his players called Ledley King was constantly suffering from leg injuries so Harry Redknapp decided to take him off the team's training schedule and give him one of his own that would give him the same benefits but would be a lot easier on his legs, the training consisted of running on inflatable floats in a swimming pool and doing all of his cardio vascular work in a swimming pool as it was easier on his legs and prevented injury during training so he would then be physically fit for games on the weekend. Another example of Harry Redknapp understanding the physical needs of participation is that he sent Aaron Lennon Jermaine Defoe and Gareth Bale to do sprinting training with Olympic runners to give them even more of an edge against defenders. These examples are the ways in which Harry Redknapp has understood the physical needs for participation. |

(P1)Taking your time to with things and letting players develop naturally and letting them settle in, patience is also the state of endurance under difficult circumstances, which can mean persevering in the face of delay or provocation without acting on annoyance/anger in a negative way. Patience is the level of endurance one can take before negativity. | Explain how a sports leader would meet this characteristic and why it is important for successful leaders to possess it? (M1)A sports leader would meet this quality by persevering With their players so they can settle into the club without feeling pressured. Also if a player is young and has a rather bad attitude or if a player is suffering from a rather bad recent run of form then giving them time to mature naturally and find their own form is also how to meet the characteristic of patience. | Example (P1 & M1): An example of a sports leader fulfilling this characteristic is Roberto Di Matteo the manager of Chelsea FC when Roberto took over Chelsea they were going through a terrible spell of form and also their £50m striker Fernando Torres was going through an awful spell of form and was being left out by the ex Chelsea manager AVB. Roberto Di Matteo brought the whole team together and during his fixtures he didn't change the team much apart from bringing torres into the line up, Chelsea's first few results under Roberto were not brilliant but in time the results picked up and they beat the best team in the world FC Barcelona and then won the European Champions Cup after coming from behind in the last ten minutes and also Torres regained his form and scored a decent amount of goals in the last few fixtures of the season and champions league and he has had a good start to the 2012/2013 season. Because Roberto Di Matteo was patient with the team and with Fernando Torres they both found their own form without too many changes and because he was patient he led them to European cup glory and Fernando regaining his form. Because Roberto Di Matteo showed demonstrated this patience it makes him the ideal sports leader to write about. |

Select a characteristic (#2):Persistence | Describe the meaning of this characteristic? When John McDermott was a player for Grimsby town he was right footed and could send a ball to a target with his right foot very accurately however when asked to send the ball the same distance and accuracy with his left foot he was un able to do this, he then spent weeks on the training ground just practising sending a ball the same distance and accuracy with his left foot and after being persistent and sticking at it he then was able to use his left foot as good as his right. Also john McDermott has played 754 games for Grimsby town and has spent his entire 20 year playing career at Grimsby town which is very persistent as over 80% of players have at least 5 clubs during their careers. Because of this john McDermott is the ideal sports leader to list under the characteristic of persistent. |

Select a characteristic (#3): Consistent | Describe the meaning of this characteristic? (P1)Consistency is doing something always to the best of your ability and always giving 100% effort and if you are consistent You are rarely wrong and often have a good ratio of win: loss it is an essential characteristic for a sports leader to have. | Explain how a sports leader would meet this characteristic and why it is important for successful leaders to possess it? (M1)A sports leader would meet this characteristic if they are Always on time for training and always give players 100% and never really make any sort of mistakes, also being at a club for a long time shows consistency. | Example (P1 & M1): An example of a sports leader fulfilling this characteristic is Sir Alex Fergueson the manager of Manchester united. Sir Alex is the ideal sports leader for this characteristic because he has been at Manchester united since 1986 and has won 24 titles including wining the treble, the league the fa cup and the champions league all in one season which is an unprecedented feat for an English club. they have also won the league 19 times and rarely lose more than 15 games in one season. being at a club for 25 years and winnining trophies nearly every single year and rarely losing more than 15 games per season is why Sir Alex is the ideal sports leader to list under consistency. |

Select a characteristic (#4): Approachability | Describe the meaning of this characteristic? (P1)Being able to have people come to you when they are in going through a hard team either with family or professional situations. it is about making yourself available at all times and having a good set of ears and calm communication skills. | Explain how a sports leader would meet this characteristic and why it is important for successful leaders to possess it? (M1)A leader would meet this characteristic if he let his players know that his door was always open for them to come in a have a chat, also being polite and calm is ideal because it instantly makes you seem more approachable and therefore if you are calm and polite people will be able to approach you a lot more easier. | Example (P1 & M1): An example of a sports leader fulfilling this characteristic is Harry Redknapp the manager of Tottenham Hotspurs. When Tottenham's striker Jermaine Defoe's father passed away Jermaine instantly turned to harry Redknapp for comfort and consolidation. Harry Redknapp made himself approachable to Jermaine Defoe and he gave the player time off and this gave him time to grieve for his loss and recover from the emotional trauma properly so when the player came back from compassionate leave his performance in games did not drop. (M1)A sports leader would meet this role if they have a good sense of time management because it's no good having everything organised for you then to turn up late. Also if you know the club you are working with inside out so everything can be organised to the finest detail. | Example (P1 & M1): An example of a sports leader fulfilling this role is Brendan Rodgers the manager of Liverpool FC. Brendan Rodgers is known regionally for being one of the most organised managers in the game because everything he does is organised right down to the finest detail. For example before every single game the Liverpool players will eat exactly 3hours before each game and training is the same time and duration every day.
