Week 4 – Leadership Qualities

1. What lessons about being a successful entrepreneur did you learn from Ryan and Aaron?
Both Ryan and Aaron had a vision and drive to become entrepreneurs. Both wanted to make a difference by helping others, they had a goal in mind. They knew what the potential profits they can make and the costs involved per customer. They analyzed their target market and identified a need for their services. Aaron was good at developing the software while Ryan was good at marketing the product. With both having complementing skills, they were able to expand their business using their technical and marketing expertise.

2. Who are the stakeholders of iContact and how are their needs balanced by the company? iContact's stakeholders include Ryan and Aaron as the owners and all of their employees that want to see the business to keep making profits. Other stakeholders include companies that hire Ryan and Aaron for their email campaigns as they use iContact for their services, the potential customers that read the emails sent using iContact as they are the target audience and hence they will be measured to assess the effectiveness of iContact’s business model. Lastly, iContact’s competitors are their stakeholders (in the same business, and businesses not using the Internet for advertising and hence potentially losing revenue due to iContact’s business methods). Ryan and Aaron balance their needs by helping small businesses compete with larger businesses. Their company has hired many people, providing training and competitive salaries. Additionally, they practice environmentally friendly activities by advertising through the electronic mail medium, thus saving paper and trees.

3. What most impressed you about these two entrepreneurs? Did they seem very different from the typical college student? Did they inspire you to think about being an entrepreneur yourself?
We’re impressed that Aaron and Ryan took such a risk early on in their life to wanting to be entrepreneurs and help others. They however made calculated risks ensuring they would make a profit per customer. Other college students were probably enjoying parties, having fun, studying, and writing assignments; we’re sure they were doing some of the same, but they also had the vision and strived to create a successful business. Some of the team members always knew they wanted to go into business; they just haven’t gone into it yet but this story similar to Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook story and how that social networking giant began, are both very inspiring. They can look forward to becoming a successful entrepreneur one day.

Qualities of Leadership

...Qualities of Leadership Leadership is a quality that is not given, but is achieved from personal power and having the strength and self-determination to make decisions for a group and being able to live with those decisions. Leadership consists of many aspects including thinking, imagining, innovation, the ability to lead in a war time atmosphere and possibly having religious influence. In Udall Brady’s short story “He Becomes Deeply and Famously Drunk” the author shows how even a small Spanish man can possess great leadership qualities. Apparently all the other ranch hands do not teach the narrator a whole lot about being a rancher. Instead, Jesus, who is a part time worker on the ranch, actually teaches the narrator the ins and outs of ranching. Brady tells this by saying “He’s worked for Mr. Platt off and on for a good many years and while the other here resented me, pissed on me for being young and ignorant, enjoyed watching me make a fool of myself, Jesus helped me out from the start, taking time to show how to dally a rope, say, or throw calf for branding.” (Brady 535-536) This statement in and of itself shows Jesus’ leadership skills, because even when the other ranch hands shunned him for being young and inexperienced, Jesus was there to back him up and be a friend and lead him into becoming a great rancher. Jesus shows leadership qualities as well when he and the narrator are off to fix the windmill. While driving to the windmill Jesus spots a calf with pink-eye...

Leadership Qualities

...Qualities of A Good Leader Ledership Essay An efficient leader is defined as a person who is followed by the others. Besides that, a leader has to know about the human nature, and be able to direct people reducing the group's doubts about succeeding. Some people believe that a leader is born that way and there is no way, practicing or studying, to create a leader. They are wrong because inside of each and every one of us there is a leader waiting to be awake and holding on an opportunity to come out. A leader is capable of influencing and inspiring the people around him to voluntarily commit towards accomplishing a certain goal. There are different types of leadership people who specialize in trying to understand this important phenomenon. The only kind of leadership in which a person communicates true self are by way resonates with other people. This behavior is highly individual and situational for both the leader and follower and therefore there are a huge variety of ways in which effective leadership occurs. On top of that, when we think about the characteristic of a leader, we often think of leaders that are dynamic, which makes each of us to follow. We could take an example, such as Hitler.  He did not have the values that we should follow, but he had that inspiration for the country to follow.  If we also stop to think about the leaders today, we do not get the same vision of a leader that has a dynamism that is hard to resist, but rather a leader that has a good quality...

...Leadership qualities: Equity theory I. Relevant facts * Equity theory was coined by John Stacey Adams in 1963 on job motivation * It does not concentrate on the “individual self,” but includes the other employees * The “self” compares him or herself with other employees in the organization * When people feel well treated and appreciated in the job place, they get motivated to perform. * When they are not appreciated, they are demotivated and grow a feeling of disaffection * The equity theory measures the level of fairness in the workplace by comparing an employee to the others * The theory does not look at how the rewards exceed the efforts, but looks at the fairness that a person is getting in the workplace compared to his or her fellow workers * A worker compares the reward/investment ratio and how he or she enjoys being in the workplace * According to the theory, the input to work is not hours only, and the reward is not money only * Employees look at what they put into work, and what they get in return * An employee compares these with the other employees (referents) to determine the fairness * In our case, some employees feel that their counterparts are being favoured. * They feel that their contributions are not equal, and their efforts are not recognized II. Leadership & Managerial Qualities

...Leadership & Managerial Qualities Abstract Managers and leaders, whether managing firms, their own organizations, or a platoon must have a good understanding of their habits and leadership traits. Managers and leaders take full responsibility in their communication with their employees to enhance organizations. The way they communicate to their employees ensures whether their team will respect them and work for them, or possibly run the business into the ground. Through truthfulness, optimism, future thinking, and the ability to communicate, managers are the leaders in organizations that keep businesses running smoothly in day-to-day operations. Manager Qualities and Leadership Throughout my life, I have been blessed with the opportunity of being in the presence of exceptional and effective leaders. Many different experiences like being a combat marine for eight years and while serving five years deployed for the OIF, (Operation Iraqi Freedom) and OEF (Operation Enduring Freedom) campaigns. During that time I was given great responsibilities and duties which helped give me the direction and skills that have made me become an effective leader and manager. It is essential for a person to be able to communicate and he/she must be humble. One might question how these two seemingly different characteristics or qualities relate to being a leader, but you must note that without these two qualities effective leadership is lost. Communication is everything...

Leadership Qualities Reassessment Paper

...Leadership Qualities Reassessment Paper Ronald Nance BS, RN August 25, 2015 Mary Jane Sansouci The class has revealed that some of the leadership qualities that I initially thought I possessed were both correct and incorrect. An accurate analysis revealed that my personal confidence scored very high on the initial assessment and I believe that still holds true. However, the assessment also stated that I have a deficiency in providing a vision to the people I lead and I definitely still do not agree with that observation. I believe my leadership style is closely related to a transformational style that motivates and rallies people toward a common goal and belief. Vision is an attribute that I believe I utilize quite often to convey an idea and plan when providing guidance to the people seeking leadership. Personally, I aspire to become a more consistent leader when faced with challenges that I don’t want to take on. Proper education and research will provide me with the tools I need to enhance my leadership qualities. Ultimately, advancing my knowledge will create avenues within the leadership environment. I will enhance my communication style in order to effectively convey perspectives and initiatives according to task at hand. In addition, I will become an avid listener to facilitate discussions amongst my peers. The incorporation of these skills will foster a more effective leadership style. Leadership is not always something that is innate within an individual...

...Charlie Brown’s Leadership Being a leader is a huge responsibility. Leadership requires an individual to possess certain traits that are admirable to followers. Charlie Brown is a leader in his own right. Some would argue with his leadership ability based upon his inability to come out on top with the tricks Lucy so deviously carried out. However, the fact remains that even though Charlie Brown could not win with Lucy, others within his trusted circle believed in him and followed him throughout his endeavors to lead; these followers include Snoopy, Pig-Pen, Peppermint Patty, and Marcie. This paper examines the traits Charlie Brown possessed to make him a leader among his followers and relates the traits to leaders within an organization.
