Great leaders are not born, they are made. There are many personal and professional qualities that come together to create a leader with great skills. While a person may not be naturally endowed with all of the leadership skills needed to be a great leader, they can be learned. A starting point to evaluate one’s leadership skill level is to take a personal inventory of your current leadership skills. Based upon the information provided from your inventory, you can identify areas where additional learning is needed. The mark of any good leader is having the ability to acknowledge that they do not know everything and that they have room to grow and improve.
My personal inventory of leadership skills and competencies, obtained through the completion of a leadership skills quiz, resulted in a score of 76 out of 90. The results of the quiz were broken down into three major leadership components. They were personal characteristics, emotional …show more content…
It also revealed room for improvement in my level of emotional intelligence. Under transformational leadership there were multiple areas suggested for improvement and learning. My initial thoughts on the leadership skills scorecard were that it was correct in some areas, but inaccurate in others. In particular, I do not agree with my score of 8 out of 10 on the finding that I need more self-confidence. In fact when reviewing the suggested materials to “improve” my self-confidence, they actually open the article with a statement relating to my daily work as the quietly confident doctor. Delving further into my self-efficacy and self-esteem, as mentioned by the article, I again believe myself to be ably proficient in those areas. In sum, I believe my self-confidence to be at a healthy level. I am not over-confident, nor am I lacking in confidence.
