Terrorism from the left and right
Terrorism can be defined as the indiscriminate use of violence to cause fear amid people to achieve an objective that may be financial, political, and religious or based on some specific ideology (Fortna, 2015). Terrorism from the left and right refers to left-wing terrorism and right-wing terrorism. Also, Left-wing terrorism can be related to Marxist–Leninist or revolutionary terrorism. It usually targets capitalists or conservative regimes to overturn their rule and replace them with socialist systems. Occasionally, left-wing terrorism may be witnessed in governments that are socialists as a form of rebellion against the regimes that are in power. Right-wing terrorism, on the other hand, refers to a type …show more content…
Nevertheless, left-wing terrorism is thought to be making a comeback. The recent shooting of republican representative Steve Scalise is stated as an example of increasing violence from the left. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that more violence may be rising amongst left-wing groups, fueled by the polarization caused by Trump`s election as president. In the United States, left-wing terrorism grew from fragments of the Weather Underground and other groups such as the Students for a Democratic Society. Some like the Symbionese Liberation Army were involved in kidnappings, murders and stealing from banks. Studies conducted in the nineties show that the number of leftist attacks were quite high and accounted for more than seventy five percent of all domestic terrorist strikes (Fortna, …show more content…
The said attacks are mostly orchestrated by white supremacists, neo-Nazis, neo-fascists, anti-government extremists, anti-abortion groups and other movements. In European countries such as France, there have been cases of right wing terrorism as witnessed in the recent past. Following jihadist attacks in France in November 2015, there was retaliation by right-wing terrorist that targeted six mosques with undertakings such as shooting, launching grenades and use of other homemade explosive devices. In 2014, a German right-wing terrorist group, known as Old school Society plotted an attack on a refugee shelter. Nevertheless, the group's leaders were arrested before the attack and

...and were short-lived. Aldo Moro, a relatively left-leaning Christian democrat, inspired this alliance. He would later try to include the Communist Party as well, with a deal called the historical compromise. This attempt at compromise was, however, stopped by the kidnapping and murder of Moro in 1978 by the Red Brigades, an extremist left-wing terrorist organization. The Communist party was at this point the largest communist party in western Europe, and remained such for the rest of its existence. Their ability to attract members was largely due to their pragmatic stance, especially their rejection of extremism, and to their growing independence from Moscow (see Eurocommunism). The Italian communist party was especially strong in areas like Emilia Romagna, where communists had been elected to stable government positions. This practical political experience may have contributed to their taking a more pragmatic approach to politics. [edit] The Years of Lead See also: Strategy of tension On 12 December 1969 a roughly decade-long period of extremist left- and right-wing political terrorism, known as the years of lead (as in the metal of bullets, Italian: anni di piombo), began with the Piazza Fontana bombing in the center of Milan. Neofascist Vincenzo Vinciguerra later declared the bombing to be an attempt to push the Italian state to declare a state of emergency, in order to lead to a more authoritative state. A bomb left in a bank killed about twenty, and was initially...

Are Parties Becoming Less Ideological?

...illustrated clearly with Fukuyama’s book, titled ‘the end of history and the last man’ which depicts how with the introduction of the 3rd way on the left, and many right wing policies now too extreme, the collapse of conventional ideology. He suggests there is now a final form of government since the end of the cold war. This is some what clear in the UK with the birth of New Labour in 1997, and the less extreme Conservatives, many argue they are simply both competing on economic grounds. The famous quote being ‘its economy stupid’, almost suggesting the economy is a new form of ideology. The same can be said for the US, but on less of a severe basis. Although Clinton is said to be most similar to Blaire, centering himself from extreme left wing policies, the rise of the TEA party in America, and to some extent Obama’s health care reforms can be said to be a revival of traditional ideology. Although to a less of an extent, Cameron’s Big Society can also said to be a revival of traditional Conservative policies. In terms of the economy parties are moving more centre-right and on social issues more centre-left. Although perhaps appearing very ideological in the US in particular American Politics is still very ‘catch all’. In terms of the economy it can be said parties and not becoming more ideological. Traditionally parties on the left intervene more in the economy and the right favor a free market economy. This can be seen clearly in the UK with the response to the banking crisis...

...Prof. Gadd March 29. 2011 La Shawn Early The Marketing of Evil: How Radicals, Elitists, and Pseudo-Experts Sell Us Corruption Disguised As Freedom Summary Marketing is the application of the knowledge of human psychology to the task of persuasion." (p.99) David Kupelian. Marketing Evil is a must read for those wishing to understand the culture war that the left has declared on American institutions, values, and ethics. Kupelian, with a calm, steady and patient hand, exposes the left as master marketers’ selling an agenda of ever increasing recklessness and corruption as a designer substitute intended for classical American ordered liberty. His chapter on the three step process (desensitize, jam, and convert) devised by sodomites to sell their spectacular species of wickedness to main street America is worth the whole price of the book. Chapters detailing the rotting corruption of the liberal education establishment, showing the manifest moral bankruptcy of modern feminism, and exposing the blood thirsty, predatory nature of the pro-abortion movement give a chilling glimpse into the cynical techniques used by the left to manipulate people into waging war against their own enlightened self interests. There is a chapter written on "Media Matrix" which is nothing short of brilliant. Kuplelian pulls back the curtain and exposes the wizards pulling the levers of fraud and deceit that has masqueraded as news for the last 40+ years. The author addresses each topic head-on without...

Double Take

...“Double Take” In Melissa Lafsy’s “Double Take”, the author takes a trip to China to get an adventure of a different culture, but is left perplexed from being reminded of the nuisances she had left behind in the United States. Her story portrays that American culture is viral and contagious to other parts of the world. A couple of years ago, I made a trip to Haiti. The day before the trip, my mom advised me to leave my trendy clothes and jewelry at home. “You wouldn’t want to stand out!” she exclaimed. She was afraid that someone would notice that I am not from the area and would rob me. So, I packed clothes that were ragged and mix-and-match, confident I was going to fit right in. After getting off the plane, I caught a taxi to Port-au-Prince where I was to meet my aunt. Children in the street welcomed me and the other tourists yelling “meeyami people!” When I got out the car, they were startled by, what it seemed like, my appearance. Why did my mom tell me I was going to fit right in wearing my red and black Freddy Kruger striped tank top, a green baseball cap, and nearly torn pink shorts?! Most of the people had on trendy clothes. They were even named brand! They looked up to me; instead they were left disappointed, perhaps insulted. Melissa Lafsy and I can agree that celebrities spoil foreign cultures through music and films. She was welcomed by a 20-foot billboard of Mariah Carey in the South China Sea coast. That would be the last thing any American would expect to see...

What Makes Us so Different? Understanding Political Ideology Through Partisanship

...Govt-2301-WS3 What makes us so different? Understanding Political Ideology through Partisanship People today think that it doesn’t matter how you vote, the outcome will always be the same because the Democratic and GOP parties are run by corporations. Some think that in order to break away from the special interests and influences, there should be a strong third party and that party with a different platform is the Libertarian Party. Historically the main two parties were not much different. In the beginning both parties believed that “men (not big government) was to rule them” (The Fundamental Differences Between Republican and Democrats). There was a mutual desire for individual freedom. Currently it seems that their fundamental beliefs have changed. The Democratic Party wants to increase government involvement in the lives of the American public, whereas the Republicans would like to see decreased national government and have each state govern themselves (The Fundamental Differences Between Republican and Democrats). The Libertarians seem to want to get back to what the founding fathers envisioned. Each party has very strong convictions on the topics that confront America today. The hottest topic facing the nation is Same Sex Marriage. Since the beginning the Democrats have defended Civil Rights and supported the expansion of opportunities for all. They fight to end all forms of discrimination, but this is an uphill battle. “We support marriage equality...

...#8, Cabugao Dayanara Rose Ticlao ARC2 9:00 am – 11:00 am CTHM 2H3 Asst. Prof. Robinson V. Laxa What is Arnis? Arnis is also known as kali, escrima, baston. It is the best known and the most systematic fighting art in the Philippines. The origin of the term ‘Kali’ is uncertain, the word ‘Eskrima’ and ‘Arnis’ are of Spanish origin “ Esgrima” which means fencing, and Arnis meaning “armour”.Consequently, practitioners of this style are referred to as Arnisadores,  Eskrimadores  or Kalistas. Before I took up arnis, I asked my self about the reason of taking it. Initially it was for self defense, but now it was more a philosophical reason. Arnis is really focused on techniques. So while it can benefit me physically, it’s really about self defense. At this age, 18, I really expect to have many encounters where I need to defend myself. Also the fact that I am studying in Manila, I know I really need to know some techniques for me to protect myself. It is nice to know that I would be able to protect myself and my family if needed with this simple knowledge about arnis. But I guess really the philosophical part comes not directly from knowing how to disarm and subdue an opponent, but from more of the indirect aspects. Arnis forces you to focus so course it will help you to improve...

...Abstract expressionists , James Pollock created an abstract full of symbolically hidden messages , called The Portrait and a Dream , 1953 First impressions that are given off by this painting sends messages of confusion , anger , hopeless dreams , perhaps the inner thought and feelings of the artists when he made the abstract . The art work portrays someone who furiously scribbled many lines across the canvas in no controlled manner , working from hostile and angry emotions . If music was made to match this painting , it would not be smooth jazz or classical br but like rap with an angry fast techno beat producing violence When considering the title of the painting , and looking at the line arrangements , Pollock was telling a story about his frustrations over empty dreams . Dull , plain off color canvas is chosen as the background for this art . To the right is a very black and Halloween orange colored head , perhaps an indication of what is going on in his mind as he was painting or it could be a resemblance of him in his sleep at night . The main theme or point behind this painting appears to send messages to let someone know this person is upset . Many artists write songs , create paintings , choreograph dances to get certain points to someone who has made them upset . Pollock seems to be sending an underlying message to one person , a person who somehow blocked him from his achievements , even though many people are fascinated with this abstract . To the center gearing...

What Is the Right Supply Chain for Your Product - Summary

...What is the Right Supply Chain for your product? -Marshall Fisher Summary prepared by Sunny Bhambhwani for Great Lakes Institute of Management Chennai Need for the Right Supply chain Before judging the correct supply chain for your organisation, we first need to understand what a supply chain is. A supply chain is a system of moving a product/service from supplier to customer. It involves organisations, people, technology, resources and activities. Hence, a right supply chain would be the one that not only delivers the product/service to the customer, but also helps the producer match the demand of the product/service to his supply, thereby causing no excess or shortage of inventory. In the current competitive marketplace, a producer cannot afford to lose any customer due to unavailability of the product when the customer needs it, nor can he afford to bear excess cost for inventory surplus which might be unsold for a long time. Hence, deciding the right supply chain is of prime importance in the operational functioning of the organization. Types of products To judge the right supply chain, the producer first needs to identify his product as functional or innovative. A functional product is the one that generally satisfies basic needs, has a long life cycle and has a predictable demand. Basic commodities fall under this category. Due to the stability in the demand, competition is fierce for functional products and hence, producers tend to differentiate their product from...

Basic Defense

...EXS 237 8/15/2012 BASIC DEFENSE Basic stance is one of basketball defense fundamental which the feet is position as wide as the player shoulder with weight balanced on the balls of his feet. This is the best position however if the foot is flatted, back on heels or legs closing together then it’s hard to move causing the dribbling of offensive player around the other. So it’s always better to keep their knees bent slightly with your back low and then making sure that one hand is extended high to guard shots and passes while the other hand extended low on the ball. Then next defense is focusing on the waist where you avoid getting faked out but rather focus on the part of the offensive player’s body that doesn’t move. Focusing on the eyes, head and legs of the opponents is not right and can be easily failed to do the defense. While the other player focus on the ball the offender will then do a fake pass, fake shot or fake going one way and go the other way therefore this is not suggested to be happened because some player may end up sucking air as the offensive player goes in for the lay-up. Also remembering to watch the mid-section of the opponent because they can’t go anywhere without it thus making it hard for them to fake their pass or shot because you know which side they really intend to go. Positioning and footwork are very important principles in playing good basketball defense. So to avoid the legs crossing, moving from side to side is suggested and when doing...

I think it would help if Epstein and Zimmerman agreed on someone he trusts to monitor his behavior. She can also simply threaten him asking him to “change or find another job.” A couple of great points that were mentioned in “How to Manage Difficult People” is to check whether the troublesome employee is in the wrong job and to assess the group dynamic. Assessing your personnel is vital to a team’s success. Zimmerman is someone who can run your team to the ground but because of his production, you have to have him. Maybe Epstein can create a different position where he does not have to interact as much with others and he can be left alone to do work. To go along with this, group dynamic is important. Conformity

...According to Leon Mann, conformity means "yielding to group pressures". Everyone is a member of one group oranother and everyone expects members of these groups to behave in certain ways. If you are a member of an identifiable group you are expected to behave appropriately to it. If you don"t confirm and behave appropriately you are likely to be rejected by the group. Like stereotypes, conforming and expecting others to conform maintains cognitive balance. There are several kinds of conformity. Many studies of conformity took place in the 1950"s which led Kelman to distinguish between compliance, internalisation and identification. Compliance is the type of conformity where the subject goes along with the group view, but privately disagrees with it. Internalisation is where the subject comes to accept, and eventually believes in the group view. Identification is where the subject accepts and believes the group view, because he or she wants to become associated with the group. Leon Mann identifies normative conformity which occurs when direct group pressure forces the individual to yield under the threat of rejection or the promise of reward. This can occur only if someone wants to be a member of the group or the groups attitudes or behaviour are important to the individual in some way. Apart from normative conformity there is informational conformity which occurs where the situation is vague or ambiguous and because the person is uncertain he or...
