This film starts with a “cheerful” animation of elves singing and dancing with animals and flowers. It was supposed to be cheerful animation, yet to me, it seemed creepy because the animals were not as cute as Disney animals, flowers had mouths but no eyes, and the elves looked like creepy dolls just like in horror films like “Dead Silence” and it became more creepy when the cheerful animation stopped and dissolved into a grave yard shot, and the narrator started explaining that it was not the type of movie we were about to watch.
When the narrator starts introducing the three orphans, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. The first shot looked similar to the painting “Persistence of Memory” by surrealist painter Salvador Dali. In each shot, one of them was in a barren field surrounded by a body of water with a few dead trees. It was expressing the loneliness of the children and was as if telling, if they make a mistake, they will die. The title of Dali’s painting matched with one of the children Klaus’s characteristic too. Klaus remembered everything he reads; “Persistence of Memory.”
House of Count Olaf was very Gothic. His entrance door shape was a pointed arch. As soon as the children come inside the house, there are flying buttresses around the entrance. Most of the light source looked like sunlight through the windows, which is another characteristic of Gothic architecture. Natural lighting made the interior look cold and dirty. The word “Gothic” was used by Giorgio Vasari to describe the culture he considered rude and barbaric in 1530s, and it suits the characteristic of Olaf. Gothic style was used to build castles and palaces. To the kind of person who wants to make the children his own servants, it was a great theme. Gothic style worked very well for Olaf’s house and it helped emphasize the creepiness of Olaf. There are “eye” marks/patterns all over his house and in almost every shot in Olaf’s house scenes, which makes the audience feel like they are also being watched by Olaf as well as the children, no matter how far away they try to escape.
The court, which appears in the film had Greek characteristics; for example columns. Ancient Greek people were the origin of civilization that people in the history and today learned a lot of things from. Therefore, the court which straights people in the film, was built with a Greek style.
In the scene when Olaf first tries to kill the children, they are in his car. Since Olaf is an actor, the car is filled with mirrors so that Olaf can view himself from every conceivable angle. It not only emphasizes his character, but also makes his eye contact a lot more intense, because you are looked at by 12 eyes instead of two. The parallel editing which was used between children in the car and Mr. Poe driving right next to the train approaching children’s car made the scene very thrilling. The next location where the children were taken was uncle Dr. Montgomery’s house. It was difficult to tell what kind of architectural design the house was, but it looked very Renaissance. Renaissance architecture’s characteristic is based on symmetry, proportion, geometry etc… which worked well with the characteristic of the scholar uncle.
After Dr. Montgomery’s death, the next relative that the children were sent to was aunt Josephine’s house built in the air on a cliff. Her house looks like houses in the Medieval Era when there were a lot of wars and fights, and people were scared. It worked very well just like in other scenes, with the characteristic of the person who lived there. Uncle Josephine has a lot of fear, such as: the refrigerator falling down and crushing someone, the doorknobs shattering into pieces, and the stove catching on fire. The children suggest to her to move somewhere safe, but fear of realtors prevents her from it. Whenever uncle Josephine and the children are in the house, they are always nervous because the house shakes hard because of the wind and if it breaks down, they will all die falling into the ocean. This tense atmosphere was everywhere in the scene not only in the house. When uncle Josephine meets Olaf, she is enticed by him and the children get really worried. The house which was easily effected by winds is very similar to Uncle Josephine who also very easily gets effected by Olaf; the house was representing her.
Every time when the children move to the next location, they always have to travel by taking an isolated path. For example, when they go to their uncle’s place, they drive on a street, which is surrounded by water and a grass field. When they move to uncle Josephine’s house, they have to take a ship between cliffs to a small town. They both make the audience feel “why the heck do all their relatives live in such weird places?” and increase the tension of mystery and anxiousness. The next location where they do Olaf’s play is in a dead forest where there is an abundant watch house standing. The theater was not a real theater and looked like it was built instantly just like the play which Olaf comes up in the last minute. It was not a real theater and the play was not a play but a real marriage. Everyone there is manipulated by Olaf. The film was visually so stunning. Their choice of cinematography technique, production design, casts; Jim Carrey was amazing, sound truck contributed to create this masterpiece film.

I don’t always need music to study there are times when it just helps when redoing notes, but not while trying to read information to be retained. My second style was Naturalistic. I enjoy the outdoors or at least an outdoor setting inside if possible. I have moved my desk next to a window with plants hanging as well as sitting around my desk. I allow my pets to join me in the room, but I pet them and sit them down on their pillow or close to my feet. I enjoy the natural lighting from the window instead of the harsh desk lamp at night. The breeze that blows through the window is relaxing to me. I keep a diffuser of lemon oil going most of the time, lemon smell makes me happy and peaceful. I tried to set up my area that makes me comfortable since I knew Nursing School would require me to sit and study away from distractions at home. While spending a lot of time in that space I wanted to make it appealing to me, not dreading to be there. I hope that this will put me in the right frame of mind while studying and help me relax, retain information and learn. My last style was Visual. ...VINEGAR AND LEMON AS A HAND SANITIZER AN INVESTIGATORY PROJECT TO MS. RHEA SIENES OF THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS SCHOOL CEBU INC. In partial fulfillment in Science Submitted by: Regina Lim Rationale: Nowadays a lot of us Filipinos get sick easily. According to the experts, it is because of the germs we accumulate as our day progresses. These germs could pass from one person to another or by just touching anything and doing our day-to-day activities. How can we lessen the germs we get without affecting our activities for the day? That is how I came up with the idea of using vinegar and lemon as a hand sanitizer. Vinegar has anti-bacterial and cleansing purposes; lemon on the other hand can kill germs and remove any bad odors that your hands may have developed. Most hand sanitizers that we see in drugstores contain many chemicals and it can be very expensive at most times. The hand sanitizer I will be creating is the complete opposite. It is natural and eco-friendly and you can just make it with the items that are already in your pantry and refrigerator. Review of Related Literature Lemon The lemon has many purposes and well known for its culinary uses especially its juice. A lemon is a hybrid between a sour orange and a citron. Lemon is also used as a temporary preservative for some food that oxidizes and turns brown after being sliced. The juice is used for cleaning as well. If you mix lemon and baking soda, it...

Supply and Demand

...Interactive Supply and Demand Simulation Lemonade Stand": a game that just oozes the phrase "supply and demand". "Lemonade Stand" was somewhat challenging in the gameplay; the concept, however, was simple, play through seven days, selling lemonade, while buying the components necessary to concoct said lemonade. Sounds easy, but the kicker is the part where you want to come out with as much profit as possible. I played three seven day sessions of this game, and never once did I manage to come out with a profit. It seemed as though the only time I was drawingin customers was when I dropped the price and raised the amount of sugar per pitcher, which would, needless to say, increas my spending and decrease the money I'm making. Obviously, this is not good for business. A game such as this, believe it or not, requires quite a bit of thought, and, if one hopes to be successful, a strategy. My strategy going into my first gameplay was simple: I didn't have one. My brother had played this game before and warned me that it is difficult to know what to do until you see how the customers react. If you get little-to-no customers, drop the price, then see how they react. Even after lowering the price, I was getting customers that were telling me to lower it even more, and some customers just simply said, "Mmm!" So I knew the lemonade I was producing was tasty, but many were not happy with the price. I lowered the price to fifteen cents per cup, and people started saying it wasn't good...

Andy's Recipe

...Case Study 3.3 – Andy‟s Recipe Andy Garafallo owns an Italian restaurant that sits in the middle of a cornfield near a large midwestern city. On the restaurant's far wall is an elaborate mural of the canals of Venice. A gondola hangs on the opposite wall, up by the ceiling. Along another wall is a row of real potted lemon trees. "My ancestors are from Sicily," says Andy. "In fact, I can remember seeing my grandfather take a bite out of a lemon, just like the ones hanging on those trees." Andy is very confident about his approach to this restaurant, and he should be, because the restaurant is celebrating its 25th anniversary. "I'm darned sure of what I want to do. I'm not trying different fads to get people to come here. People come here because they know they will get great food. They also want to support someone with whom they can connect. This is my approach. Nothing more, nothing less." While other restaurants have folded, Andy seems to have found a recipe for success. Since opening his restaurant, Andy has had a number of managers. Currently, he has three: Kelly, Danielle, and Patrick. Kelly is a kitchen (food prep) manager who is known as very honest and dependable. She loves her work, and she is efficient, good with ordering, and good with preparation. Andy really likes Kelly but is frustrated with her because she has such difficulty getting along with the salespeople, delivery people, and wait staff. Danielle, who works out front in the restaurant, has been with Andy the...
