Leonard Cohen

...Leonard Cohen Leonard Cohen was born on September 21, 1934 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He started playing music in his teenage years by learning how to play guitar, at around the same time he started to write poetry and novels as well. As a middle aged man, Cohen had become intrigued by the Greenwich Village folk scene and, with his background in music and writing, music composition was a natural step. He soon began to compose and release folk-rock and pop songs. Leonard Cohen is not famously known for his singing abilities, instead his unique voice tone in songs he sings, as exemplified by our choir class as well as critiques. Cohen’s most popular song by far was Hallelujah which is even now a TV talent competition staple, who’s many ironies include the fact that its parent album was rejected by his record company in 1983. Hallelujah's path to ubiquity has so many meanders that there is an entire book devoted to it. Hallelujah even appeared in the movie Shrek boosting its popularity as Shrek was one of Disney’s biggest hit. His other songs did not reach quite far as Hallelujah as he is commonly referred to as “that guy who wrote Hallelujah”. Though Hallelujah was the most popular Cohen song, it was no necessarily the best song that he wrote What makes him distinctive is that he is both a poet and an artist, but those are not the only factors that make him different. His type of music is folk music, but unlike other artist his music does not specifically stick to folk...

Nba Kawhi Leonard

...Kawhi Leonard has quietly returned to first-round production after struggling out the gates and missing 17 games with a hand injury. Leonard posted four-straight 20-plus point games for the first time all season this week and his usual defensive stats came along for the ride, too. Check out these lines: March 8 vs. Chicago: 20 points (9-for-20 FG, 0-for-4 3P, 2-for-2 FT), 8 rebounds, 0 assists, 3 steals, 0 blocks, 0 turnovers, 39 minutes March 6 vs. Denver: 25 points (10-for-17 FG, 1-for-5 3P, 4-for-4 FT), 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers, 36 minutes March 4 vs Sacramento: 21 points (9-for-11 FG, 2-for-4 3P, 1-for-4 FT), 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover, 29 minutes February 28 vs. Phoenix: 22 points (9-for-18 FG, 0-for-1 3P, 4-for-4 FT), 10 rebounds, 0 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 0 turnovers, 31 minutes While these numbers may not look overly impressive, consider this. Of the 20 players averaging 20-plus points since February 28, Leonard leads in field goal percentage (56.1%), turnovers (0.8 per game), and is the only player to average both 2.5-plus steals and 1.5-plus blocks. This across-the-board production was key to the Spurs' 4-0 record over the span and pushed Leonard to 6th in Yahoo! Fantasy rankings over the last two weeks. This increase in usage and health for Leonard has caused Danny Green's tremendous season to dip. He posted only 11.8 points, 2.5 3s, 4.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.3 blocks over...

Poe V. Leonard

...Case: Poe v. Leonard (2002) Rule of Law: The conditions for determining whether or not a government officials' denial of qualified immunity based on interlocutory appeal is reviewable if it otherwise satisfies the test of the collateral order doctrine. Facts: A woman (Poe, plaintiff, appellee) was surreptitiously videotaped unclothed while under the pretense that she would be assisting in the creation of a training video for the trainees' program at the Connecticut State Troopers Police Academy by Trooper Pearl, videographer, under the direct command of Captain Leonard(3rd party defendant, appellant). While Pearl's actions were grossly negligent to the point of a violating the plaintiff's Constitutional rights, it is Leonard's actions, or lack thereof, in properly supervising Trooper Pearl that are under question in this case. Issue: Did Leonard's inaction, be it by failing to review the personnel files of those he would be assuming command of, specifically Pearl, or by constructive knowledge of Pearl's history of unbecoming behavior, violate the doctrine in place for qualified immunity, thereby placing Leonard in a liable state, and lead directly to Pearl's ability to have "carte blanche" control over the creation of the training video, which then lead to the Constitutional tort committed upon Poe, on or about the fall of 1992? Poe argues that Leonard acted recklessly by failing to review personnel files, therefore forfeiting his right to qualified immunity. Leonard countermands...

At the end of this television commercial, this “suburban” teen landed a Harrier Jet near a bike rack at his school and the plane’s jet stream stripped a teacher to his underwear, then “suburban” and “smug” teen said: “Sure beats the bus.” at the same time the words “Harrier Fighter: 7,000,000 Pepsi Points” appeared on the screen. Poe V. Leonard

...Police ("CSP") and the Connecticut Department of Administrative Services began to revise the testing procedures for trooper candidates at the CSP Training Academy ("police academy"). Captain Leonard, who had just assumed command of the CSP Bureau of Selections and Training,[1] supervised this ongoing project along with Dr. Martin Anderson ("Dr. Anderson"), the Chief Personnel Psychologist for the State of Connecticut. A particular focus of this project was the development 127*127 of several testing videos, designed to screen out those trooper candidates with poor observational and communicative skills. In essence, trooper candidates would be required to view a videotaped scene of a crime or other representative "real life" scenario that CSP officers typically confront and then to explain what they had observed. As originally planned, the video scenes would include a variety of circumstances: a depiction of a person driving while intoxicated, a man with a weapon who stops and robs a victim, a simple trespass, a "static" crime scene, and a scene with a distraught victim. During this project, Leonard met with Dr. Anderson and with Pearl, who was the trooper responsible for the production of training and public service videos. Although Pearl had several supervisors at the police academy, Leonard directly supervised Pearl in connection with the testing videotape production. Pearl, unfortunately, had a history of inappropriate or otherwise problematic...

Leonard V. Pepsico.

...Case Review/IRAC Case Citation John D.R. Leonard, Plaintiff v. Pepsico, Inc., Defendant 88 F.Supp.2d 116 (1999) Key Facts Pepsico conducted a test of a new promotion in the Pacific Northwest from October 1995 to March 1996 where plaintiff saw the advertisement and contended that it offered a Harrier Jet. Through acquaintances, plaintiff raised $700,000, and wrote a check to Pepsi along with 15 pepsi points and a filled out order form for 7,000,000 additional Pepsi points. Defendant’s fulfillment house rejected plaintiff’s submission. Plaintiff’s counsel responded on May 14th, 1996 forewarning that they will file an appropriate action if they do not fulfill their offer of a Harrier Jet. Procedural History This case went straight to the United States District Court. Legal Issue Whether the television commercial constituted an offer of a Harrier Jet. Legal Reasoning Although the plaintiff filled out the Order Form with a check, etc.; -Under these principles, plaintiff’s letter of March 27, 1996, with the Order Form and the appropriate number of Pepsi Points, constituted the offer. There would be no enforceable contract until defendant accepted the Order Form and cashed the check. -The commercial cannot be regarded in itself as sufficiently definite, because it specifically reserved the details of the offer to a separate writing, the Catalog. -As the Mesaro’s court explained, the absence of any words of limitation such as “first come, first served...

The Story of Stuff: a Review

...The Story of Stuff: A Review The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute film aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of excessive human consumption. Presented by Annie Leonard – an activist for consumerism and environmental sustainability (Story Of Stuff Project, 2013) – this video provides a simple yet well researched explanation on the ‘behind-the-scenes’ management of the life-cycle of common items consumed daily in the United States. From mining and manufacturing to distribution, consumption and waste, this presentation takes viewers on a journey to explore many missing fragments that are hardly ever reported in the system (Leonard, 2009). Watched by over 12 million people worldwide, and translated into over 15 languages (Roosevelt, 2010), Leonard has received both applauds and criticisms for her unapologetic condemnation of humans (especially Americans) – for their excessive consumption and wasteful habits – and her rather conspicuous allegation of the devious relationship between the government and private corporations. One significant issue that Leonard (2009) presented in the video was that, due to human activity, natural resources around the world are rapidly diminishing. Natural resources such as minerals and trees are constantly mined and felled to satisfy men’s insatiable appetite for more goods. The presentation revealed that in the last decade, one-third of the world’s resource base has depleted. Furthermore, it is said that only four percent...

Democracy vs Democracy

...Langston Hughes’ poem, “Democracy, and Leonard Cohen’s poem, “Democracy”, both authors share the common theory that there should be democracy. However, the two stories have completely different perspectives. Langston Hughes wants democracy for African Americans and Leonard Cohen wants democracy for the world. Despite these differences, the two authors use their rhyme scheme, their stanza structure, and their point of view to express their demands. In Leonard Cohen’s poem, “Democracy” Leonard Cohen’s rhyme scheme in the fourth stanza shows that change could happen, but people don’t want it. For example, in the fourth stanza of “Democracy” by Leonard Cohen, “It's coming to America first/The cradle of the best and of the worst/It’s here they got the range/And the machinery for change/And it's here they got the spiritual thirst/It’s here the family's broken/And it's here the lonely say/That the heart has got to open/In a fundamental way/Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.” In this stanza the rhyme scheme is A/A/B/B/C/D/E/D/E/F. Leonard Cohen uses this rhyme scheme so people could understand where he’s coming from better and two, it helps him emphasize on places that don’t have democracy. In his stanza structure, he uses 10 lines (Or at least in this copy) in one stanza. This not only shows that he emphasized on this stanza but it also shows that its related to one another. In the line, “ It’s here they got the range/And the machinery for change.” Leonard Cohen puts this line so he shows...

Ward-Leonard Control System

...Ward-Leonard Motor Generation System Introduction: A control system generally controls, regulates, and updates its output continuously based on present inputs, nature of the system, and the past outputs. In other words, there is a feedback mechanism that is inherent in the system, and is called a closed loop control system. For example, adding an emitter resistance to a common emitter amplifier, results in a negative feedback mechanism in the amplifier system – if the output current increases, the input voltage decreases accordingly so as to reduce the output current; if the output current decreases, then the input voltage increases in order to raise the output current level. Negative feedback thus ensures that the output is always controlled to stay within an optimal range. Similarly other systems may exhibit a positive feedback mechanism. In either case, a control system can be represented as follows: Figure 1: Control System representation In Figure 1, G represents the forward loop function and Fb represents the feedback function. In case the Fb function is absent, the system is reduced to an open loop system. The most popular representation of control systems is using the ‘Block Diagram’ approach (Balakrishnan, 1988). Each component in the system is represented as a block, with its role represented as a mathematical function. From the block diagram representation, the overall function of the system, called the transfer function, is obtained. The transfer function...

Capitalism

...industrial revolution, the traditional trade has evolved to a new global platform and some of economic system like capitalism came into prominence. According to Cambridge Dictionary, capitalism is a political and economic system in which a country’s trade is controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. With this system, the numbers of producer increased because of the private owners. Until the last few decades, it seems beneficial and useful breakthrough for humanity but today, increasingly people criticize this system. While Peter Saunders in his article “Why Capitalism Is Good for the Soul” defends that capitalism provide a profitable result for us; Clive Hamilton in his books “Grown Fetish” and “Affluenza”, Annie Leonard in her video “The Story of Stuff” and Tim Kasser in his book “The High Price of Capitalism” claim that capitalism has damaged people in some ways. Although some people argue consumerism provides an easy life and a better world; it actually makes people materialistic and dissatisfied with life, kills people’s free time and damages the plane. With capitalism, people become materialistic and dissatisfied with life. They become addicted to money and their possessions. Preoccupation with money has invaded every piece of people’s life and people have become too materialistic. However, being materialistic doesn’t make people happy and dissatisfied with life. Today, people no longer care about moral value and norms but only themselves and their...
