Levodopa: the story so far

Parkinson's disease is caused by the loss of brain cells, which contributes to less dopamine to be produced. Dopamine is a chemical in the brain, that sends signals to the muscles to move, it was first discovered by Swedish pharmacologist Arvid Carlsson in 1957, which he later received a share of the Nobel prize in 2000, for the development of Levodopa (L-DOPA). L-DOPA is converted into dopamine and was recognised as the 'miracle drug' in the late 1960s, for its sudden effect on the Parkinson disease patients, that was immobile for years.

However, it didn't take long before its side effects were apparent. Not only is L-DOPA toxic, but also after several years of using L-DOPA, it provokes two thirds of the patients
