...Aristotle Essay Adnan Ahmad Compare and contrast Aristotle‘s concept of mind with that of Descartes. Introduction In this essay I attempt to show Aristotle’s concept of soul/mind*[1]. Then I compare and contrast it with Descartes’ concept of mind. In order to understand Aristotle’s concepts of mind, I shall consider Aristotle’s De Anima, in which Aristotle mostly concentrates on soul/mind discussion. I will examine the work of Kahn and Sorabji, who both considered Aristotle’s and Descartes’ philosophy in relation to soul and body problem. In order to compare Aristotle’s concept of mind with Descartes’, I am going to introduce Descartes’ most famous philosophical work which involves the question of mind directly, namely hisMeditations. …………………………. …………………………… ………………………………. If we look at Aristotle’s De Anima we can understand that pre-Aristotle thinkers were already concerned with corporeal and incorporeal problems. For example, for Plato soul was an ‘incorporeal’ and immortal thing, but body corporeal and mortal. The first impression we get from reading De Anima is that the mind and body problem was unsolved. Perhaps the resolved problem didn’t satisfy Aristotle. Aristotle claims that an incorporeal thing cannot exist without a corporeal thing. Aristotle’s new theory for solving soul and body problems makes controversial debate among most post-Aristotelian philosophers. Rene Descartes was one of them who rejected the Aristotelian...

...Worst Days of My Life A simple life has a different meaning and value for everyone. Life is beautiful, but not always easy, it has problems too, and the challenge lies in facing them with courage, letting the beauty of life act like a balm, which makes the pain bearable, during trying times, by providing hope. I myself experienced a lot of bad days. I may say that because people are more negative, or better to say we remember negative things better than the positive ones. We may handle same problems and facts about life differently, not only because people are different but also it depends on the place, and time the action is taken. One of my worst experiences in life or better to say the worst days of my life was the first year I moved to United States. It was September 9th of 2007, when my family and I went to get our visa for the USA. I remember exactly that day that my brother was standing outside of United States embassy in Turkey. He couldn’t come in because he was over twenty-one, so he was aged out from the family visa that we were supposed to get all together. Everything went well, and after the interview was done we went out to see where my brother is. He was crying outside! He always had a dream of coming to United States, and for that reason that he got aged out, he had to wait for eight more year for his dream to come true. I assume that my mom had the worst day of her life, that she can come to United States, but her son can’t, and has to wait for eight more...

...I am writing to you on the topic of establishing Greek Life on the campus of Penn State New Kensington. I firmly believe that with the establishment of Greek Life on this campus will bring more life to the campus, aid in school pride, and assist in many school and locally sponsored activities. With Greek Life being a major factor at many campuses and schools, it would be a great addition to this campus here. Also with seeing firsthand the great things that Fraternities and Sororities can do at Penn State Erie, the Behrend College, it would make Penn State New Kensington a more enjoyable campus to be at, as well as making this campus a more prominent figure in the Penn State system. The establishment of Greek Life here has the potential to make...

...Annalyn B. Alvarez The Life I Deserve Life would be the best gift God had given us. Without this, nothing seems to be possible here on earth. Life keeps us on breathing and living. But with this topic, I am here to talk about my life specifically on how I made it up to here now. Ladies and gentlemen, I am Annalyn Alvarez. Good afternoon! We do have different lifestyle, for the primary reasons that we came from different families and different places, but one thing is for sure, we all have our dreams and plans with our life. I came from a simple family in Calatagan Batangas. I attended a public elementary school and with the help of scholarship, I attended a private sectarian high school. Living becomes so much tougher during those high school days because of financial problem but still I studied very hard during my three years in high school and became on top. Senior year came and with the help of my sister’s husband it became less stressful with us, though it became that way, I felt that I am flopping in my academic subjects and didn’t concentrate well. I don’t know why but studying is not the priority anymore though I knew that I am aiming to be on one of the top students again to gain scholarships in my chosen university. But, graduation came and I didn’t make it. I am an ambitious person and I really have a big dream so it was a big disappointment and as for me it was my first time! It may seem just a little problem but this started all my regrets. The dream to be...

...there is much more opportunities for me here in the states. My education will improve here, the job opportunities are much higher & well paying for my future family. Me: What steps did you have to take as part of the naturalization process? Sonya: At first, I was in college in Guatemala, I then got a student visa to come here and go to school and have an internship in my future field I was studying in. My visa was only for the summer. I signed up for my permanent green card. I knew I wouldn’t retain it right away because no one does. I did end up finding my husband and we ended up getting married not to long after we met. I then retained citizenship through the marriage shortly after. Me: How would you describe how you felt about the process? Sonya: I felt it was a hassle and a struggle and lots of work to become a citizen of the U.S. Except in the end it all becomes worth it. I realize they do so much and test us on things to protect their country. Me: How has gaining citizenship changed your life? Is your daily life different because of gaining citizenship? Sonya: Gaining citizenship was such a drastic change in my life for the better. I was able to complete school here with a much better education then what was offered in Guatemala. I was able to receive a higher paying job then I had expected and It is also much easier and luxurious to raise my family here in a nice home. ...The sages stood in the fire like the stones in mosaic marbles. He asserted the permanence of the sages in fire . The old man requested those agent of God to purify his souls. So here fire stands for purification. So he appealed to them : “Consume my heart away, sick with desire And fastened to a dying animal.” It is very significant because the old man wants to burn all his animal desires that are the black mundane wishes of our soul. It will be then easy to go to the eternity. Here the burning is not agony but the blessings of God. Through this fiery purification we may take the divine shape. Here Yeats used fire not as destroyer but preserver that remind us God Shiva in Hindu mythology. No doubt here fire stands for purgatory. In this regard the second important poem is “Byzantium” where the poet described the ‘fiery purification’ in detail. In the opening line the poet said -- “The unpurged images of the day recede’ that imply that those ‘unpurged’ should be purged that is the point of view. After describing the skeltonic urpurged shape the poet directly went to the purification episode. He wonderfully described the divine fire that is blazing autonomously...

...Assignment 2: Why are you here now? Anna Jang Why are you here now? This is a very subjective question because it could have several different meaning depending on an individual’s aspects. The three key words in this question are, “you,” “here” and “now.” I believe the answer will depend on an individual’s concept of these terms. To me, “you,” “here” and “now” mean something very general about life. I consider “you” as a person’s own embodiment and physical being. “Here” means the world that person lives in and “now” as in this moment. So in conclusion, the question “Why are you here now?” means “Why am I in this world at the moment?” Of course I realize, my definition would be prejudiced to another individual’s. For example; “Why are you here now?” could mean “Why am I standing in this puddle when it’s raining?” or “Why am I in this course when I’m only in grade 11?” I find that this all depends on perspective. Going back to my original definition of “Why are you here now,” I think the reason I am in this world is unknown at this point in my life. I definitely have not experienced, learned and grown enough to make that assessment but I have faith that I will learn it one day. There is no way to know your reason for life if you have not participated in the fullness of it. There is a purpose to individual life, and to me, the goal is to find out. I’ll never really be able to know until I evaluate my existence at the end of...

...LIFE CHANGING DECISION MGT/230 Life Changing Decision In August of 2001 I made s decision that would change my life forever. Because of some of the choices I had made in the past and the future not looking as good, I decided to leave my home town of Nacogdoches and move to Houston. I based my decision clearly on the facts of doing better in life and becoming another statistic. Being from a small town trouble became very easy to get into so, I decided to remove myself from all elements of the situation and move to Houston to begin a fresh new life. My move was actually rushed and not planned. I had a brother that lived here and suggested I move here for all the work opportunities. I did not have any money saved nor did I have a solid plan of what I was going to do once I got to Houston. I was only driven by the fact I was getting out of Nacogdoches and was starting over fresh. Once here I encountered many difficult obstacles that I had no idea how to manage for less fix. Even though I had my brother here; I was pretty much on my own and left to find my own path to success. My brother had offered me a foundation but it was left up to me build my home. It only took me one day and I found a job and was on my way to great accomplishments. Once I begin to work and get that true since of independence, I begin to reach for more. I enrolled in school and begin educating myself to a whole different side of life. I started thinking more outside the box instead of living within...

...A: Mr. Doherty, you are putting your dream into practice, aren’t you? B: Yes. There are two things I have always wanted to do---write and live on a farm. Today I’m doing both. I am not in E.B. White’s class as a writer or in my neighbors’ league as a farmer, but I’m getting by. A: Compared with the life in the city, how do you like the life here in the countryside? B: I can say my wife and I have finally found contentment here in the country after years of frustration with the city and suburban living. A: Could you talk about your life here? B: Well, it is a self-reliant sort of life, and a satisfying life too. We grow nearly all of our fruits and vegetables. Our hens keep us in eggs. In the summer we canoe on the river, go picnicking in the woods and take long bicycle rides, and we ski and skate in the winter. We get excited about sunsets. A: How nice it is! It’s really a desirable life. Then have you encountered any /some difficulty? B: Yes. The good life can get pretty tough (15). In the first winter, we were buried under five feet of snow from December through March. One storm after another blasted huge drifts up against the house and barn (33). When spring came, it brought a flood. The river overflowed, covering much of our land for weeks (37). A: You are so busy, then do you have time for writing? B: I manage to spend 50 to 60 hours a week at the typewriter or doing reporting for the freelance articles I sell to magazines and newspapers (24). Thanks...

...some atom or molecule, who has in turn morphed into some intelligent life form. Understanding the meaning and purpose of one who does not believe in Christ, but in his or her own worldly happiness or obsessions is all too realistic to me in this World. Having seen so many people fall to their unfortunate eternal state due to what they have viewed as their meaning and purpose in life is and all too realistic reality for me. Whether it being drugs, fame, money or fame it is sad that people of the World put these at such importance in their lives, and do not know the true meaning and purpose. Unfortunately, without a God to guide them to what is right and wrong, people all too often fall into what they believe to be right and wrong with no moral conscience, or authority. What is the true meaning of destiny to a secularist? What could possibly happen after life here on Earth since they do not believe in God or an eternal life? This question for a while has me stumped to think that one could believe that why you die that is it, that’s the end of the road. Secularist believe that there is no such thing as an eternal life in Heaven, so they try to leave the legacy here on Earth whether it may be personally in record books or materialistically for generations to come. In contrast to the secular humanist view of my God, I believe that everything here on this Earth has a meaning and purpose, that everything here on Earth was meant to be. Even us, down to the very strand of...

...I can claim it, and I can testify to it that Jesus is the center of life, and I know for sure that He is at the center of my life. Many people struggle with Jesus today, especially in the last ten years or so. It seems like since 9/11 happened people have lost touch with God, and some have even turned to other gods. It is a sad world we live in, if you look at it from a worldly point of view. This is not the way to look at things; you have to look at it from a spiritual point of view. God is in complete control and always has been, He has a plan and He is definitely putting it into action. Just read the book of Revelation and you will see that God’s plan is coming together perfectly. I could spend all day here with many quotes from Revelation but by the time I got done we would have a thousand pages or so of just quotes, so I will just say this, Just READ IT! Before I continue any further, I will state this and claim it, that there is only ONE GOD AND THAT IS JESUS CHRIST THE LORD!!! He is the “The Way, The Truth and The Life.” (John 14:6 ESV) I will always believe that, no matter what the world says. John 14:6 alone sums it up in my opinion that Jesus Christ is the center of life, and the only true living breathing Son of God; another one of my favorite quotes from God’s Holy Word, and it sums it up as well, that Jesus Christ is the true God, it is in 1 John 5:20, and states it very plainly; “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that...

Undocumented parents come here to better their life, they want a better future for themselves and their family. Its can be tough to live in a place where our president is very racist. They live in fear, children worry about what would happen without their parents. They live in fear with walking out their homes and getting deported. A undocumented person has less privileges as an american citizen does. About 30% of these children grow up without their parents due to deportation. Our the ages 8-10 is when they start to grow up without their parents. Around 46,000 parents have been deported in the past four years. Deportation is...

Human Being have been doing a various sorts’ action according to their age position. In my research I will find out that person’s acting depend on their seven different age according to William Shakespeare but the same age categories’ person do different action based on their outside atmosphere. Person has a different age category but there action totally varied by their outside environment. Beside this also I will analysis couple of question like, why William Shakespeare compare this world’s a stage? And life a play? Actually behind all greatness, there is a small thought. Maybe Shakespeare was desperately related with drama, play and everything related in it and based on his life experience, Shakespeare compare the whole world as a big stage and also based on his life experience, compare our life a play. All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women are merely players “Man is mortal.” Everybody will must breathe his last breath (Quran. Sura ankabut, 2nd para). Each & Every natures born and one day they will die but within born and death there is a time where we live. This time is very much significant for everybody because it’s our lifespan. ...August 15, 1412 BC Well here I am, in the need of that Olive Tree. My life is more than chaotic and I need that peace. You would think that being in a land surrounded by rivers, I would find the peace and tranquility that I seek. Yet there is always a strife. I guess it could be bad like my friend, who had to pay to live here and be treated as an equal since she is not originally from here. She brought over a piece of bronze and told me to look at the shiny beam and always think of my life as such. That was a nice gesture. Friends are sometimes hard to come by. I struggled with the issue of feeling free. A lot of my people feel we should be free as long as we follow the laws of Greece. Not to mention in 508 BC we became one of the first cities to establish democracy. Thinking back over how I arrived at the time in life I am, I think back to my ancestors. I have been told they originated as early as 5000BCE. Maybe even 7000BCE. I know my life is little in comparison to theirs but not much has changed. Due to our location, the soil was not setup for large agriculture so my people had to rely heavily on trade. Thank goodness my husband was and original Athens. That affords us the luxury of not having to pay those darn taxes. He is a metal maker, who helped make weapons. But the thing that makes me mad is he gets to go out and vote and yet I am stuck here mainly in the house. And not to mention he gets to go to the Olympic Games. Always saying he wishes he were in the...
