...------------------------------------------------- Life Styles Survey Table of Contents 1. Introduction 2. Personal Thinking Styles 3. Impact on Management Style 4. Genesis of Personal Styles 5. Conclusion My “Life Styles Circumplex” profile is surprising to me on many items. My primary thinking style is dependent and my backup is approval. I would guess my styles would have included perfectionist, humanistic or achievement- oriented style as a primary or back-up. I am an “over thinker” and may have did this on the survey as well, causing some of the results to be a little off. We will further discuss this as we begin to review my primary thinking style. Let’s begin by looking at my primary thinking style dependent. The circumplex shows a dependent style as someone who feels their efforts do not count, a person that has very little control over their lives, difficulty making decisions and feeling of helplessness. I do not agree with this as my primary thinking style because as VP of Business Operations and Finance for our company I make many decisions each day that affect the company and the lives of each of our employees. We are a smaller private company with fifty-five employees so the decisions that myself and the other members of the management team make are critical to the success and the livelihood of our employees. I do not take our employees or their family’s financial stability lightly with the day to day decisions I am required to...

...GM591 PREPARATION GUIDE: LIFE STYLES INVENTORY(LSI) Introduction: Thinking and Behavior "The quest for leadership is first an inner quest to discover who you are” (p.391).[1] --Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner--- Self-awareness is foundational to effective leadership and organization success[2]. Research in leadership and organizational behavior indicates that managers who are blind to who they are, and to the effects they have on other people in their organizations, place their effectiveness and their careers at risk. A frequently cited axiom is "the first commandment of leadership is to know thyself." For example, in their studies of managerial and executive derailment, the Center for Creative Leadership found that successful managers: (1) understand their values, personal styles, and strengths and weaknesses; (2) know the impact of these values, styles, and strengths and weaknesses on their ability to effectively work with others and achieve their goals; and (3) are quick to reflect upon and learn from their own experiences. Despite these advantages, we often resist opportunities to increase our self-awareness or to acknowledge error. We fear that learning something new about ourselves will be painful -- doing so may require us to change our treasured and habitual ways of seeing, thinking, and behaving. Self-awareness is also an important barometer to ensure that even the best leadership practices don't become destructive. As Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner caution...

...RUNNING HEAD: LSI Paper I am charged with the task of completing the Life Styles Inventory Survey to give a self-description of my thinking styles. The purpose of this assignment is to determine the impact that the personal styles have on my management style and to identify which one of my thinking styles may be reducing my overall effectiveness. After completing the survey, my circumplex shows that my primary thinking style is the “Conventional Style”(4 o’clock) and my backup thinking style is the “Power Style” (8 o’clock). I agree with the results of the conventional thinking style, but, I do not fully agree with the results of the power thinking style. According to the LSI results, the conventional thinking style is one that measures our inclination to act in a compliant way. Conventional thinkers worry about adhering to rules and established procedures. According to the LSI results, when we depend on on established procedures in determining how we do things, we risk losing our sense of uniqueness and individuality. I would have to agree with the results of this survey that I am a conventional thinker. As a child, my parents had very strict household rules that, simply, were not to my benefit to break. Therefore, I often abided by the rules. I think this is why I tend to do things strictly by the book. Doing things by the book gives me a sense of security in knowing that I followed the policy, in case something goes wrong. As a conventional thinker, I prefer...

These styles are base on the self promoting and behavior that establish your role and meets the needs of security of task orientation. ...LIFE STYLE INVENTORY The life styles inventory is a survey of questions that help us to see our own personality and what type of behaviors we have on others. Also, it helps us to look at the positive and negative qualities of our personalities and ways to improve upon them. The LSI Style Profile helps to identify ones perception on how they reflect and behave in work involved circumstances. The profile is broken up into three style categories. 1. Constructive Styles: Reflects self-enhancing thinking and behavior that contributes to one’s level of satisfaction, ability to develop healthy relationships and work effectively with people, and proficiency at accomplishing tasks. 2. Passive/Defensive Style: Represents self- protecting thinking and behavior that promote the fulfillment of security needs through iteration with people. 3. Aggressive/Defensive Style: Reflect self-promotion thinking and behavior used to maintain one’s status position and fulfill security needs through task-related. Part 1: Personal Thinking Styles (primary, backup, limiting) “Primary” Thinking Styles According to my LSI profile , my primary style is conventional. Mostly people who have conventional style feel that they want to see everything unchanged .Conventional people feel that they are traditional and they like to know exactly what is expected of them in every situation. They are practical and very structured. Conventional people might be good at science like math ,but they may...

...LSI : Life Styles Inventory MGMT591 – Dr. Hallcom 9/13/2013 The Life Styles Inventory survey, provided by Human Synergistics International, measures a person’s personal orientation toward thinking and behaving. The questions contained in the survey measure twelve styles related to the thoughts and attitudes that motivate a person’s behavior, how a person might relate to others, and how a person might problem solve and/or make decision (“What lsi measures”, 2012). Various psychologists and management scholars, i.e. Maslow, Hertzberg, etc., influenced the questions presented in the survey. The goal is to use the results to examine my strengths and those other areas that need improving. My styles profile is broken into three parts: constructive styles, passive/defensive styles, and aggressive/defensive styles (“Your lsi styles,” 2013). Of the twelve styles, my primary style is ‘achievement’ and my backup style is ‘approval’. These styles have the greatest influence on my behavior. In selecting that slice of my circumplex, the achievement style is characterized by “a focus on achieving a standard of excellence; the knowledge that individual effort counts,” and “a belief in the benefits of asking for and giving honest feedback” (“Your lsi styles,” 2013). Most of the items that comprise the achievement style manifest itself in my personal- and work-life. For example, I enjoy being busy, learning more, taking on difficult tasks and accomplishing them. I pride myself in...

...Life Styles Inventory Pedro G. Martinada III PGMartinada@gmail.com GM591 - Leadership and Organizational Behavior Professor Andrew McLeod January 16, 2012 Personal Thinking Styles (primary, backup, limiting) Based on my Life Style Inventory Circumplex, my primary thinking style is dependent, with approval and conventional as my backup style followed by avoidance as my limiting style. All four styles placed me in the Passive/Defensive personal thinking category with People Orientation and Security as my primary needs. According to the LSI Style profile the Passive/Defensive style represent a “self-protecting thinking and behavior that promote the fulfillment of security needs through interaction with people”. I am somewhat surprised that the survey result closely captured my primary thinking style. I think I can attribute my dependent style due to my current transition to the civilian workforce. After twenty four years of active military service I learned to rely and depend on the financial stability along with its rigid organizational hierarchical structure the military had to offer. Now that I have transitioned back into the civilian life and now in the ‘real world’ I tend to think about not rocking the boat when it comes to dealing with my colleagues in my current place of employment. Although I do not think I am overly defensive or aggressive when interacting with people. I do however, tend to listen more to what people have to say. Since I score 91% higher...

...INVENTORY PAPER MEMORANDUM Date: November 6, 2011 Subject: Life Style Inventory Paper As per your request to prepare a personal learning agenda in GM591, I have completed my own “Life Styles Circumplex” profile. Below is the analysis of my “Life Styles Circumplex” profile and my personal learning agenda in GM591. Part I: Issues and Events The biggest challenge I face in the wholesale/retail industry (previous job) is dealing with people from all works of life. It is interesting to note that during the course of the month, at work, I will come across someone that will do or say something that will almost get me upset and in some cases succeed in getting me upset. I have read books that address issues like anger management, customer service and good people skills. I usually exercise good self-control in these areas. Another issue I deal with is trust. Over the years, I have found it increasing difficult to trust people, especially customers. There is an adage in the automotive retail industry that says, “Customers are liars.” The third main issue is discernment of people and their motives for doing and saying certain things. I continuously strive to be more holistic and well-rounded in all areas of my life. I am aware of the dangers of anger, distrust and naivety when they become the dominant part of one’s life, even if it is for a brief period. If these issues are not addressed, they can destroy one’s life, job or other vital relationships, especially the business-client...

...Running head: EMPATHIZING THE DYNAMICS Empathizing the dynamic challenge Jasmine M. Rivera Keller Graduate School ABSTRACT Knowing my behavior personalities and how I manage effectively are vital styles of mundane life because of it’s informational efficiency and consistent characteristic observation. In this study I have found that most of my styles were accurate. Not realizing that my personality traits hinder me from successfully furthering my thought process, thus affecting my progress to grow. Understanding my circumplex style will enable me to become more effective when managing my thought process in today’s society. I will implement my values, personal style from my weakness to my strengths. This paper explores my circumplex survey that was conducted online on which consisted of my personal thinking style. Personal thinking styles are significant to perceptions of everyday life. My primary personal style was passive defensive style and avoidance was my highest expressive style. My primary style avoidance is manifested through my life and work practically. When I'm at work, as soon as I clock in, I go directly to my designated room and fulfill my job description as the teen coordinator. In the workplace I tend to have difficulty establishing relationships with Co-workers from past experience. I'm not a very cordial person. Me being able to communicate more openly to others takes time of getting to know a person. I tend to be very independent...

...Life Styles Inventory Paper Keller Graduate School of Management GM591: Leadership and Organizational Management Life Styles Inventory Paper Who am I? Where do I come from? What am I doing? Where am I going? And How do I get there are all questions we ask ourselves in one form or another throughout our lives. America is a place where one is not confined to who or what they are now. In fact one is in control of whom or what they will be tomorrow. In effect one can change the direction of one’s life. The key to doing so is to first understand one’s self. I recently took a life styles inventory survey to learn and get a better understanding of myself. Within the following paper I will identify the results of my survey to include my thinking styles, the impacts of my thinking styles and where I think I developed these styles. Thinking styles “The Life Styles Inventory measures 12 specific styles of patterns of thinking”(Human Synergy’s 2010) and is done by answering a series of questions. The chart following is a circumplex profile that was generated as a result of my answers to the survey. Primary thinking style The Circumplex indicates that my primary thinking style is dependent and is denoted by showing the higher shaded area. The Human Synergistic website (2010) describes that this style is characterized by “A passive attitude, Feelings of helplessness, the presence of rapid change or traumatic set-backs in one’s life, a lack of self respect, which results in...

...Combating the Aggressive Life Style Inventory and Gaining Success in the Workplace Glenn R November 9, 2014 MGMT 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Dr. Barbara Vallera Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University Abstract This paper explores the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) assessment and pitfalls of the competitive and approval management styles. In this evaluation, I also examine strengths and impacts of these styles. Specifically, how they can be utilized to benefit the organization and how these styles impact the four functions of management. This paper also reviews my circumplex (a person’s personal LSI profile) and critically evaluates and explains how these styles were developed. Through the course, Management 591 (MGMT 591), Leadership and Organizational Behavior (LOB), I also reflect on goals and accomplishments that can be achieved through the analysis of these frames. Combating the Aggressive Life Style Inventory and Gaining Success in the Workplace The LSI assessment helps an individual understand themselves by measuring what motivates individual behaviors. This assessment was developed by Robert A. Cooke and J. Clayton Lafferty, copyrighted by Human Synergistics International. It takes into account one’s thoughts and self-concepts and translates it into how one behaves. It looks at how one’s thinking influences goals, relationships, leadership effectiveness, and the ability to cope with stress (“What LSI Measures”, 2014). The...

...survey known as Life Styles Inventory (LSI). Human Synergistics (2007), the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) is based around the Human Synergistics Circumplex, describing constructive, passive/defensive and aggressive/defensive behaviors. The personal LSI profile dictates that I exemplify a constructive style of behavior. Attributes of a constructive style are Achievement, Self-Actualization, Humanistic-Encouraging, and Affiliative. My primary style is Humanistic-Encouraging, LSI (2007), it reflects an interest in the growth and development of people, a high positive regard for them and sensitivity to their needs. People high in this style devote energy to coaching and counseling others, are thoughtful and considerate and provide people with support and encouragement. My backup is Affiliative, LSI (2007) it reflects an interest in developing and sustaining pleasant relationships. People high in this style share their thoughts and feelings, are friendly and cooperative and make others feel a part of things. This is truly accurate. They are equally manifested in my life. No matter the place nor time, I make the needs of others a priority. I am a firm believer of treating others as you want to be treated. My Affiliative backup style is also limiting for my kindness is at times taken for weakness. This happens more at home more than in the workplace. My work past and present work history validates my LSI profile. Exemplifying this constructive style has benefited me...
