...Thunderstorms—Up (too) Close and Personal Submitted by Nicole Cordeiro El Centro College GEOL 1447, Section 51426, Fall 2013 Article Summary of Thunderstorms—Up (too) Close and Personal "It is intuitively obvious that thunderstorms are laden with a myriad of unacceptable environmental hazards to aviation”. While this may sound like fairly common knowledge, many are unaware of the hazards that thunderstorms present while flying. For instance, how often have you been at an airport, experiencing a flight delay due to weather, and witnessed the angry passenger who can’t seem to understand why the aircraft cannot take off in a thunderstorm. After all, it’s just a little rain and thunder, right (Miner, 1998)? To fully understand the hazards of piloting through a thunderstorm, one must first understand what a thunderstorm truly is and how it is formed. Thunderstorms, as reported to pilots through airfield weather reports, are nothing more than local storms which produce thunder – a fairly simple concept. However, often times, accompanying the thunder is also gusty winds, heavy rain, and sometimes hail. These conditions can obviously have an adverse impact on the piloting of aircraft. But, what causes these meteorological phenomena (Miner, 1998)? Quite simply, a thunderstorm is the result of converging air masses, typically warm and cold, which then produces a lifting effect. This lifting effect, or warm air rising over cold air, inherently...

...On Wednesday night October 12th at 8:00pm in the park, I attended a play by William Shakespeare named “The Tempest”, this play was directed by Rene Moreno. The theater play displayed the urges of greed, power, betrayal and love. The name “The Tempest” actually represent the meaning of the play. Tempest means, a violent windy storm, and the play starts off with a tragic thunder storm which strikes a boat and leaves people stranded on an island. The play begins with a thunderstorm that led to a shipwreck on an island. The passengers on the boat were headed to a wedding between Claribel and the prince of Tunis in Africa. The storm and the shipwreck was orchestrated by Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan. He explains to his daughter Miranda,...

...On May 4, 2007, a deadly EF5 tornado ripped through the small western-Kansas town of Greensburg. This deadly monster devastated the town of 1,600. After destroying 95% of the town, injuring 60 individuals and killing another 13, there seemed to be little hope of ever putting Greensburg back on the map. However, those on the outside did not realize that the determination of the folks from this small town, and the support that poured in from the rest of the nation, would result in Greensburg being better known for their positive outcomes than the destruction that was brought upon them. For some individuals, it is difficult to see past the negatives that result from a tornado. What most people don’t understand is that tornadoes and thunderstorms...

...Global Warming: Real or Temporary Climactic Change? Global warming is “the increase in the average temperature of Earth’s near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation” (Wikipedia, 2010). Everybody can participate and cut down on a lot of energy that we use. Some of it we cannot help, like snowstorms, wildfires and floods. Those are some of the affects we are seeing. The Earth is warming up at a rapid speed and melting the glaciers that are causing floods. Some areas are so dry that when a severe thunderstorm occurs and lighting strike, this cause a wildfire. In the news every day we are hearing about earthquakes, volcanoes and flooding. Just this past winter was the worst one we ever had. Global Warming is far from over but we can do some things to try to prevent it but God has the last say so. It was predicted long ago that mankind was going to ruin the earth with all the consumption of gas and polluting the air. If we start now trying to go green we probably can pro long the crisis. You can get tips from Al Gore the former Vice President. He has written books and has video tapes on how we can save our planet. The most talked about effort is called “going green.” Buy all natural cleaning products, use a reusable shopping bag and build energy efficient buildings. Global Warming: Real or Temporary Climatic Change? Global warming has been the topic...

...dream/nightmare like worlds in which authority is chasing crime. In these dark, unknowing worlds the complex characters endure violence and eroticism in life or death situation (Silver). In Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982) he has shown that neo-noir can be translated through any genre. He did this by proving it is more of a style because it is limited to technical elements. The aesthetic, economic and cultural elements of Blade Runner all express to the viewer that it not only has a Neo-noir style but it also falls in the genre of Sci-Fi. A film style is when a cluster of films have the same recognizable traits but it can be used together with any other genre because it can include too many traits from other genres. Scott was able to use shady lighting and...

...his kite during a thunderstorm or when light bulbs were installed in houses all around the world. The truth is that electricity has always been around because it naturally exists in the world. Lightning, for instance, is simply a flow of electrons between the ground and the clouds. When you touch something and get a shock, that is really static electricity moving toward you.Hence, electrical equipment like motors, light bulbs, and batteries aren't needed for electricity to exist. They are just creative inventions designed to harness and use electricity. The first discoveries of electricity were made back in ancient Greece. Greek philosophers discovered that when amber is rubbed against cloth, lightweight objects will stick to it. This is the basis of static electricity.Over the centuries, there have been many discoveries made about electricity. We've all heard of famous people like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison, but there have been many other inventors throughout history that were each a part in the development of electricity.Electricity PersonalitiesBenjamin FranklinFranklin was an American writer, publisher, scientist and diplomat, who helped to draw up the famous Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. In 1752 Franklin proved that lightning and the spark from amber were one and the same thing. The story of this famous milestone is a familiar one, in which Franklin fastened an iron spike to a silken kite, which he flew during a thunderstorm, while holding the...

Each essay will be judged on your capacity to present strong, logical discussions that support your conclusions. Case study 1 Members of Students for Fair Tuition (SFT) decide to protest rising tuition costs at Gigantic State University (GSU) by taking over Dunfee Hall, the location of GSU president Dalton Chandler’s office. As they storm into the reception area of Chandler’s office suite, shouting “Down with fascist tuition increases,” Chandler’s faithful secretary, Prudence Pimply, picks up a phone to call the campus police. Steve Steel, radical leader of the SFT, slaps the phone knocking it from Prudence’s hand without ever touching her. He then pulls out an amazing lifelike squirt gun and threatens to blow Prudence’s head off if she so much as moves an inch toward the phone or the door. Prudence collapses in a sobbing heap on her desk. Unfortunately for their purposes, the students find the only door to Chandler’s third floor office locked from the inside. After a few feeble attempts to break it down, they contend with barricading his door with filing cabinets and singing “We Will Overcome” until the police arrive shortly thereafter. The total time elapsed from the moment the students entered the building until the police arrive is ten minutes. President Chandler was taking a nap and slept through the entire incident. Prudence was so...

...family. Gossip moved fast inside the town walls and Castiel has no doubt that within hours his family will be outcasts. There is nothing he can do except to kneel down, bow his head, and take the oath. His heart is beating so loudly he is surprised that it doesn’t echo through the hall. He almost can’t understand the words of the King, they hardly penetrate his numbness and the rushing of the blood in his ears. He lifts his head to repeat word for word. He still could run. But if he did, he would break an oath. An oath so much older, so much more important. An oath almost forgotten. Castiel has tried everything to forget this oath, but failed. Right now it’s basically thrown in his face. It had been made to comfort during a thunderstorm. And while lightings had lit up the night sky Castiel had sworn to a person. The same person he is pledging to now. He is supposed to look at the King, but his eyes only rest on the person to the King’s side. Just like all those years ago he can’t take his eyes of him. Dean. Dean, who used to be his best friend. Dean, who is an omega now. Dean, who is Castiel’s true...

...People depend on energy everyday for cooking, lighting, cooling, and warming our homes and automobiles. People consume a great amount of energy. Energy is generated from non-renewable fuels. When people use non renewable energy harmful pollutants are let loose into the air and water. The more people operate ones vehicle the energy power plants produce gasoline that burns which releases pollutants. Another problem is the cost; people are noticing that ones public service utility bill is on the rise. People need to get the information that is needed to conserve energy. People need to realize that the negative effects that non renewable energy has on the planet. Non renewable energy resources are coal, oil, and natural gas. Coal resources are too expensive to expand and have the possibility to supply an efficient amount of coal to last. Coal use has risen in the last 4 years. Coal is a difficult non renewable resource to obtain because it is accessed by mining. Oil is a combustible energy that is access by drilling and pumping. When non renewable energy has been used up it can not be replaced. The living factor is that mining damages existing vegetation and the land is sensitive to the wind destruction causing air pollution. There is also water destruction which causes pollution to the waterways and destruction to aquatic habitats. Farmers are concerned about the water depletion in the underground due to the open-pit gold mining which uses a large...

...Learning is acquiring new, or modifying existing, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may involve synthesizing different types ofinformation. The ability to learn is possessed by humans, animals and some machines. Progress over time tends to follow learning curves. Learning is not compulsory; it is contextual. It does not happen all at once, but builds upon and is shaped by what we already know. To that end, learning may be viewed as a process, rather than a collection of factual and procedural knowledge. Learning is based on experience. Learning produces changes in the organism and the changes produced are relatively permanent Measurable and relatively permanent change in behavior through experience, instruction, or study. Whereas individual learning is selective, group learning is essentially political its outcomes depend largely on power playing in the group. Learning itself cannot be measured, but its results can be. In the words of Harvard Business School psychologist Chris Argyris, learning is "detection and correction of error" where anerror means "any mismatch between our intentions and what actually happens. perception noun 1.the act or faculty of apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind; cognition; understanding. 2.immediate or intuitive recognition or appreciation, as of moral, psychological, or aesthetic qualities;insight; intuition; discernment: an artist of rare perception. 3.the result or product of perceiving, as distinguished from the act of perceiving; percept...

...Critique: BTTF Mathew Peppersack ENG 225 Introduction to Film Professor Ryan Ogrodnik March 2, 2015 Critique: BTTF To critique a film is to analyze the substance of what makes up the movie. The story and its plot, characters, technical choices for scenes, and the overall production that the film shown to give the audience a final product. The number of people who visited the movie theater to watch it does not determine greatness of the film; or the amount of money the movie studio made after the budget was settled. A movie is great if it reached a large percentage of the population and that population determined through criticism and good reviews that the movie is worthy to be seen for a second, third, or fourth time. Another justification of greatness is if the film warrants purchasing the film on Blu-ray disc or a digitally copy to put on your computers hard drive. I will be critiquing the 1985 film Back to the Future starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, and Thomas F. Wilson. These are the main characters of the film for which the story revolves around. Michal J. Fox plays the main character, Marty McFly, who travels back in time in a Delorean time machine invented by Christopher Lloyd’s character, Dr. Emmett Brown. Lea Thompson plays Lorraine McFly, Marty’s mother, Crispin Glover plays George McFly, Marty’s father. Thomas F. Wilson is the antagonist as Biff Tannen. There are plenty of supporting roles throughout the film but...
