The Selfish Giant
“The selfish giant” is a short story by Oscar Wilde with the elements of fantasy and fairy tales. Oscar Wild, the author, is a famous Irish story-teller, playwright. A lot of stories show the mastery of Oscar Wilde’s story narrating skills. The Selfish giant is a bright example of his witty, intriguing and absorbing works.
In this story, the writer wants us to know that if we are selfish and vile toward one another, we will always have a storm in our lives. The story explains that the Giant had a continuous winter storm in his garden because he wouldn’t allow the children to play there; this showed us his selfishness. The writer also revealed that the Giant kept company with a Cornish ogre (a giantic hideous monster that ate humans) thus, revealing how vile the Giant was. The Giant was moved with compassion when he saw a little boy struggling to get into a tree. The writer later conveyed that the little boy represented Jesus and because the Giant "blessed" the little boy and other children by letting them play in his garden, God blessed him by allowing the Giant into His Paradise. My opinion is that the writer is trying to inform us that if we give happiness to others we can also feel happiness in our life. This story teaches the reader the importance of the friendship. When love is involved it is important to be careful in the way you treat your friends and the way your things are shared because what it is given is what it is going to be received. The Selfish Giant is about the love of a selfish Giant to a little boy who taught him to share his garden with others and in change, the Giant received the Paradise. In The Devoted Friend a boy shows that although he didn’t receive anything, he gave everything he had and did whatever he can in order to keep his friendship.
The topic the author touches upon in a story is a theme. The story is about the unselfish love. The author reveals the Giant as a representative of the world. But the world is selfish and the author shows that a person living in such a world is miserable and unhappy. Such is the giant. But when he realizes that he is alone, nobody helps him and there is no life surrounding him, the Giant gets down to doing somthing. Once the wall was knocked down, life and laughter was all around.
The story is told in the third person narration. The reason the author uses this kind of narration is quite objective. He wants to relate the thoughts of all the characters: the giant, the children. The author becomes the omniscient. He moves freely in and out of the giant’s and children thoughts and comments freely on what these characters think and say. You can see the mastery of Oscar Wilde’s story narrating skills and turn your mood according to the season. When you are inside the Giant’s garden you can feel the spring season when the children are playing and when they are driven away, you will enter into the winter season and you can even feel shivering with cold. When the “Selfish Giant’ meets the small boy and kneels down before Him, you are filled with a sense of reverence, awe and mysticism. And above all you feel that young children are really children of God and you should be liberal with them. When the ‘Selfish Giant’ lays dead in his garden, you have a feeling of sympathy for him. Therefore, by all means, the story is really a classic in the real sense of the word. This book appeals to all age ranges because of the depth of its meaning. For young children it can be read literally about a giant who is mean and whose garden refuses to grow. For older children the religious symbolism can also be reflected upon as well as discussing themes such as selfishness and forgiveness.

In this tale, a Giant returns to his home after a trip to discover many children playing in his garden. He is angered by their trespassing and banishes then all by constructing a large wall to keep them out. Winter comes to the garden and remains until the children sneak through the wall. When the Giant awakes to find them playing happily in his garden that has finally become spring, he realizes how selfish he has been. He notices one little boy crying because he is too small to climb the trees like the other children and goes to help him.
The other children are frightened and run away, but the tiny child kisses him and gains the Giant's love. The Giant tears down the wall and makes his garden a permanent play area for the children, but much to his dismay, his favorite little boy who kissed him never reappears. Many years goby and the child finally returns one morning when the Giant is very old. He reveals himself as Christ and brings the Giant to his "garden, which is Paradise? The other children return that afternoon to find the dead Giant covered with white flowers
