Analysis of "This Isn't a 'Legal' Matter This Is War"

...definitional, resemblance and proposal claims as effective building blocks to his claim will be looked at; as well as ethos, pathos and kairos. Looking into the claims of the article Krauthammer begins with a causal claim of “subpoenas cause terrorists.” He is claiming that in the past, the United States has usually reacted to attacks of terror in a judicial way which has led us to be a weak target. Next, he claims that “the post-Cold War era is the age of terrorism,” which is a categorical claim that is stating that terrorism is a form of war. He also uses a resemblance claim comparing the 9/11 attacks to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Japan attacking Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack like 9/11 and Franklin Roosevelt responded with a pledge to bring all of Japan to justice. Roosevelt wanted a justice of war and Krauthammer is stating that this should be the case for the 9/11 attacks. He has a strong pathos approach here, and uses it at the end of the article by tying Pearl Harbor into his statement, or question, “it rose to the challenge. The question is: Will we?” This was a great ending that fires up the audience to fight back. The definitional claims Krauthammer uses give strong support to his claim. Looking at the claim: “This is the formidable enemy’” we need to define what “This” is and then what “formidable enemy is. “This” is defined in the previous claim as terrorism and...

The Sniper

...enveloped in darkness but for the dim light of the moon that shone through fleecy clouds, casting a pale light as of approaching dawn over the streets and the dark waters of the Liffey. Around the beleaguered Four Courts the heavy guns roared. Here and there through the city, machine guns and rifles broke the silence of the night, spasmodically, like dogs barking on lone farms. Republicans and Free Staters were waging civil war. On a rooftop near O'Connell Bridge, a Republican sniper lay watching. Beside him lay his rifle and over his shoulders was slung a pair of field glasses. His face was the face of a student, thin and ascetic, but his eyes had the cold gleam of the fanatic. They were deep and thoughtful, the eyes of a man who is used to looking at death. He was eating a sandwich hungrily. He had eaten nothing since morning. He had been too excited to eat. He finished the sandwich, and, taking a flask of whiskey from his pocket, he took a short drought. Then he returned the flask to his pocket. He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk a smoke. It was dangerous. The flash might be seen in the darkness, and there were enemies watching. He decided to take the risk. Placing a cigarette between his lips, he struck a match, inhaled the smoke hurriedly and put out the light. Almost immediately, a bullet flattened itself against the parapet of the roof. The sniper took another whiff and put out the cigarette. Then he swore softly and crawled away to the left. Cautiously...

Remembered Event

...Son Class: SNHU 2011 Topic: Write about an remembered event Many people in the world believed that games online are nothing more than wasting time and money. However, nowadays people have changed their thought about games online and considered them as one kind of sports which called e-sport. E- Sports are very different with the other games because it require players to think in game, practice skills to cooperate with allies and defeat the enemies, and especially the players must have the sportsmanship just like the other sports. E-sports also differ from normal game online with regard to the organization. It was held as a real competition sport and the prize for the champion can reach to millions dollars. One well-known e-sports game I played is LOL- League of Legends. In this game, ten people were divided equally into two teams. All you need to do is cooperate with your allies, find a properly strategy, kill the enemies and finally, destroyed the tower’s rivals to achieve the victory. Nevertheless, the most important thing which I like about LOL is that it brings me many kinds of feelings such as disappointment, happiness, excitement… notably the surprise. Then one day, all of these feelings happened to me in the way I had never expected. There was a normal Sunday when I had to meet my friend at a gaming center at 8:00 o’clock. Unfortunately, I was still at home because in the previous night, there was a fantastic movie on TV and I went to bed late and forgot to set the alarm...

The Sniper

...The Sniper By Lian O’ Flaherty Just like flicking with your fingers, everything can change. Imagine, that in this week you are playing football with your best friend, and then the sun raises monday morning. Just a normal weekstart. But now, you are enemies. Deadly rivals. Now you are not “partners in crime” where you are at the local candy-store with your friend. One distracts the store-owner, while the other steals the candy. Now you are “enemies in crime” We are in the Middel-East Ireland, the current capital, Dublin. We are on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge. It comes to expression already at the beginning of the text (PP. 1 LL. 8) “On a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge, a Republican sniper lay watching”. This is our main character we follow through the short story. As mentioned, he is a Republican man, who fights for a free Ireland in the Civil War. And like the Civil War, the story takes place somewhere between June 28th 1922 and May 24th 1923, and lasts under twentyfour hours. But the text shows, that our main character is a professional soldier. (PP. 1 LL. 13) “He was eating a sandwich hungrily” and (PP. 1 LL. 14-15) “He finished the sandwich, and taking a flask of whiskey from his pocket, he took a short drough” and (PP. 1 LL. 16) “He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk a smoke. It was dangerous. The flash might be seen in the darkness, and there were enemies watching. He decided to take the risk” These three quotes shows, that he is prepared for...

The Sniper

...Irishmen who supported the treaty contrary to the Republicans who fanatically opposed. The Sniper is the main character and is on the Republicans’ side.  The author is very detailed in his description of the sniper: ” a man who is used to looking at death”. Especially this phrase is very effective because it instantly gives the impression that he may have very cold looking eyes, thus he seems cold, careless and cynical. Also the quotations: “He had been too excited to eat.” and ”…but his eyes had the cold gleam of the fanatic” support this. The word excited’ suggests that he enjoys having the chance to fight. He seems very determined and devoted, which shows how personal this battle is. I think he sees himself as a true freedom-fighter and maybe even a hero. He is the one who doesn’t compromise. However deeper into the story, it is clear that that is not entirely the case: “The sniper looked at his enemy falling and he shuddered.” This shows that he is able to kill, although he does not enjoy doing it. The phrase: He began to gibber to himself, cursing himself, cursing everybody,” Here one gets the feeling that he starts to realize the bitter irony of Irish people fighting each other instead of continuing fighting the real enemy- England to the bitter end. The Imagery in the story is very describing: ”The long June twilight faded into night”, “The body hit the ground with a dull thud”, “blood was oozing through the sleeve of his coat”. Not only does the effective...

A Friendly Neighbour

...When he stands up, I wonk him again and down he goes. Then I roll him down the stairs into the early-spring muck and am like, If you ever again, I swear to God, I don’t even know what to say, you miserable fuck. Karen got home. I pulled her aside. Upshot was: Keep the doors locked, and if he’s home the kids stay inside. But after dinner I got to thinking: Guy comes in in his shorts and I’m sitting here taking this? This is love? Love for my kids? Because what if? What if we slip up? What if a kid gets out or he gets in? No, no, no, I was thinking, not acceptable. So I went over and said, Where is he? To which Lynn said, Upstairs, why? Up I went and he was standing at the mirror, still in his goddam underwear, only now he had on a shirt, and I wonked him again as he was turning. Down he went and tried to crab out of the room, but I put a foot on his back. If you ever, I said. If you ever again. Now we’re even, he said. I came in your house and you came in mine. Only I had pants on, I said, and mini-wonked him in the back of his head. I am what I am, he said. Well, that took the cake! Him admitting it! So I wonked him again, as Lynn came in, saying, Hey, Roger, hey. Roger being me. And then he rises up. Which killed me! Him rising up? Against me? And I’m about to wonk him again, but she pushes in there, like intervening. So to wonk him again I had to like shove her back, and unfortunately she slipped, and down she went, and she’s sort of lying there, skirt hiked up—and he’s...

Accepting In Cormac Mccarthy's Road

...“Simul Justus et peccator.” This Latin phrase is a core doctrine of the Lutheran faith. It states that all people are righteous, yet sinners at the same time. By recognizing that we are all simultaneously righteous and sinful, and by becoming vulnerable and obedient enough to pray for our enemies, hate will be transformed to love and violence replaced by peace. While this may seem like a straightforward process, in reality, it is extremely complex. Accepting, and more importantly, loving someone who has different cultural practices, different religious beliefs, and different moral values is not only difficult, but contradicts our human tendency to believe that everything we say, do and learn is right and good. How can someone else be right and good if their beliefs are different from our own? The only way to grasp this incredibly perplexing and complex task is to pray for those who we perceive to be different from ourselves and find examples to lead us,...
