Minorities and Majorities
Questions: A description/ summary of the article. 1. This article was based on minority and majority groups in the United States. It explained how the census was showing an increase in the minority groups. It started breaking it down even more and explaining why. It showed how last year was one of the highest years for multicultural couple, and that the rate of that would only increase as well. Also, the article showed some estimates about how the future and how most kids under five years of age will be multicultural. Another thing that this article covered was how the census could be a little incorrect. Since most people won’t read all of the ethnic choices and could mistakenly not select one or more choices that would narrow it down even further. Which could be the difference of being considered a minority and majority.
Question: Your own opinion about the article. 2. I feel as if this article is a great way to show the world that we are on a road of diversity. Although the one thing that really bugs me about this article is not really to be blamed on the article but rather the census. Since if you check the box saying you are white for instance, and don’t check the not Hispanic or Latino box then you incorrectly place yourself. For that small mistake, you actually misplace yourself making some of these calculations wrong. Looking past that factor though, you can see that regardless of the percentages we can simply see children are become more diverse just by looking at our society. Although I do like how this article was speaking on the highest type of mixed racial couples were black and white decants. Since that’ll break some of the stereotypes. Overall this article was great to show people that we are diversifying, I only had a problem with the census calculations. Other than that, it was a great article to read on.
Question: How the article relates to our class and concepts we are studying. 3. This article relates to our class and concepts in the sense that our first few discussions and chapters talked about diversity and how minorities can be treated unfairly compared to majorities. This articles talks specifically about how our minorities are increasing and with that it can stop stereotypes, or at least decrease it. It generally talked about minorities and their upcoming, some of the main things were learned about in this class. In some of the classmate’s discussions from week 2 they were stating different ways to stop stereotypes along with just making the U.S. a place everyone is treated equally. This article talking about a growing minority can be a major way to fix that.
