Summary of Macquarie Island
Macquarie is an island in the Southern Ocean home to many animals, among them rabbits and cats which were introduced and now inhabit the island. These rabbits began to consume all the vegetation. In 1968, in an effort to control the situation, scientists introduced the Myxomatosis virus, which is lethal in hopes of eradicating the rabbit, this drastically decreased the rabbit population. As the population of the rabbit species decreased the cats also decreased. Therefore, the cats required a new source of food, the burrowing seabirdsand begin to cou until the birds faced extinction. Eventually, the population of rabbits began to proliferating again despite the presence of the virus, and they continued to strip as

...dive to a depth of 1,800 feet (550 meters) and hold their breath for up to twenty minutes. A normal heart rate for a penguin is approximately sixty to seventy beats per minute. Before a dive, their rate increases to 180 to 200 beats because they hypersaturate their blood with oxygen. As they dive into the water, their heart rate decreases to 100 beats per minute. Almost immediately, their heart rate slows down to twenty beats for the remainder of their dive. Their heart rate drastically decreases, so they can use the stored oxygen in blood and muscles for a longer dive. Once they hit the surface again, their heart rate goes back to 200 beats per minute to restore the oxygen they used during the dive. Large breeding colonies on South Georgia Island hold estimated 300 000 pairs of the gentoo penguin. Averagely, thirty inches tall and weighing twelve pounds, these penguins are congeneric to the Adélie penguin. Gentoo penguins have bright reddish-orange beaks and long stiff tail feathers that stick out when they walk. They have white patches behind their eyes running along the back of their head, causing the penguin to look like they have “earmuffs”. Similar to the Adélie, the Gentoo appetite consists mainly of fish and krill. Unfortunately, the Antarctic’s Gentoo penguin’s status is near threatened. The antarctic is home to sixty percent of the world’s seal population. Estimated, there are about 650 000 southern elephant seals left in the world. With the scientific name Mirounga leonina...

...CONTEMPORARY BUSINESS LAW Session 1 – Introduction to Law/Australian Legal System _______________________________________________________________________________ 1. WHAT IS LAW? 1.1 Legal Terms A Law - A particular legal rule. The Law - A declaration of behaviour in our society. - A comprehensive and changing set of rules. Jurisprudence - The general principles underlying the law: the foundation for the making of the law. Natural Law - The principles of reason and justice which flow from the law of nature (or the law of God) and which form the foundation of our legal system. Religious Law - What is right and wrong? Rationalist Law - What is reason? 1.2 Foundation for Democratic Law Natural law is based on the notions of the laws of God and reason/common sense – ie, a combination of Religious and Rationalist law. We see direct examples of Christian teachings in our law. A notable example is the case of Donoghue v Stevenson which is a major case in the law of tort. John Locke explained that natural law involved a fundamental belief that all men are equal and will, therefore, equally respect and not harm each other. His view inspired the core principle of the American Declaration of Independence and, as a result, two of the most impacting speeches: American Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be...

Philosophy & Ethics

...AS Religious Studies [pic] PHILOSOPHY & ETHICS Revision Summary Notes Revision Notes Foundation for the Study of Religion Part One: Philosophy of Religion Plato and the Forms Influence of Socrates • Socrates said that virtue is knowledge – to know what is right is to do what is right. • All wrongdoing is the result of ignorance – nobody chooses to do wrong deliberately. • Therefore, to be moral you must have true knowledge. The problem of the One and the Many Plato was trying to find a solution to the problem that although there is underlying stability in the world (sun comes up every morning), it is constantly changing (you never step into the same river twice). 1. An old theory about this problem is that we gain all knowledge from our senses – empirically. 2. Plato disagreed with this. He said that because the world is constantly changing, our senses cannot be trusted. Plato illustrated his idea in the dialogue, ‘Meno’: Socrates sets a slave boy a mathematical problem. The slave boy knows the answer, yet he has not been taught maths. Plato suggests that the slave boy remembers the answer to the problem, which has been in his mind all along. So, according to Plato, we don't learn new things, we remember them. In other words, knowledge is innate. Plato’s Theory of the Forms Plato believed that the world was divided into: 1. Reality and; 2. Appearance |REALITY ...

British Petroleum Oil Spill Disaster

...British Petroleum (BP) Case Study Executive Summary This case study report examined a public relation management problem that British Petroleum (BP) faced since the oil spill accident happened in April, 2010. In addition, this thesis recommended possible solutions and implementation plans for BP to deal with the public crisis. On April 20, the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico led to the largest accidental release of oil into marine waters in history. As a result, a huge loss of money and life was caused and affected serious environmental damage to wild animals and water pollution. BP was accused of their irresponsibility that it took 87 days before the well was closed and sealed. BP’s shares plummeted to the lowest point since 1996. The communities around the Gulf of Mexico blamed BP for their carelessness and appealed for more actions to recover their low income life. BP has already established $20 billion fund to respond the situation in the Gulf of Mexico. However, according to recent research, the amount of the money is not enough to straighten out the crisis.  In order to examine the case, we performed PEST and SWOT analysis methods. We focused on evaluating economic and socio-cultural factors that were the major elements had affects on BP’s public image. At the same time, we analyzed and key strengths and opportunities that essential for BP to revitalize its brand image. Our analysis revealed two crucial factors. First, BP’s own...

Public Securities Corporation

...1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Public Securities Corporation (PSC), a wholly-owned stock brokerage firm of the AFP Retirement and Separation Benefits System (AFP RSBS) envisions itself to be one of the top stock brokerage firms in the Philippines. The company was acquired by the AFP RSBS from a group of private individuals in 1994 with the main objective of taking advantage of the favorable prospects in the stock market and at the same time, to generate income for the mother company. Value turnover at the Philippine Stock Exchange slowed by 30% and lost P383 billion from P1.2 trillion in 1997 to P817 billion in 1998 due to the Asian Financial crisis. The decline in value turnover resulted to less commission income generated from broking services that caused both local and foreign brokers to leave the Philippine equities market and applied for temporary suspension, while others opted to cease operations totally. Political instability also discouraged investors in Philippine equities during the Estrada Administration. Illegal trading activities, such as frontrunning, insider trading and “kiting” resulted to the loss of investors’ confidence towards the regulatory bodies, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Philippine Stock Exchange. This paper presents three frameworks to analyze the effectiveness of the company’s current strategy. Among the frameworks employed was PEST Analysis or Political, Economic, Social and Technological Analysis which was used to...

...Summary Australian law is based on the culture of English law. The following characteristics derive from the English background of our law: * A system of representative democracy, using parliaments to make laws. See chapters 7 & 8. * A legal profession divided formally or informally into solicitors and barristers. See chapter 3. * A ‘common law’ system: * The system of law derived from the English legal system. Uses judicially decided cases as the basic form of law. See chapter 10. * The way that the law is made: Judges make law based on decided cases (precedents) and develop sets of legal principles which emerge from the judgments in decided cases.’ See chapter 12, 13, and 14. * The category of laws which grew from the medieval royal courts (‘the courts of common law’) and other areas of law, which came from the medieval Lord Chancellor’s role (‘equity’). See chapter 10. * Decision making in courts after an adversarial trial: derived from historical ‘trial by battle’ introduced by Normans. The battle has since then become a verbal one. See chapter 2. * A court system for dispute resolution: See chapter 11. However, Australian law has developed distinct characteristics of its own: * A federal system made up of a Commonwealth and States and Territories: separates out the powers of different bodies of government. See chapter 8. * A limited recognition of indigenous customary law: Mabo (No 2) held that native title to land could...
