In terms of the colours used throughout the piece, it is relatively simple. The main colours utilised are: red, purple and blue. At first, I will explain what each of the main colours mean before explaining how the relate to the genre of crime fiction.
Red was the main themed colour in the artwork, as it ties in with the title ‘Mademoiselle Écarlate’. I wanted to utilise the colour that was written into the title (as écarlate is the french word for scarlet) and showcase it on the movie poster in the title colour and, more importantly, the lipstick colour. In general, red is an attention demanding colour. It is emotionally intense and is often used to evoke erotic feelings in the audience. According to the theory of colour, the colour red is often associated with feeling such as: strength, power, passion, desire, love and, danger. The sultry nature of the colour plays perfectly into the role of a femme fatale…show more content… The main purpose of having consistent purple nails was to signify that the killer was female. It is an automatic assumption that the killer would be male, as that is the general narrative that is showcased in different types of media. Therefore, without having the coloured nails, it would be presumed that the killer, and person wielding the gun, would also be male. Again, in conjunction with the theory of colour, purple is a more so feminine colour and can convey feelings of romance and nostalgia. Purple is often associated with: power, dignity, independence and mystery. Again, playing on this concept of a femme fatale. In this case, Mademoiselle Écarlate is using her sexuality in order to gain or complete an objective. In this case it is luring someone in using her sensuality and desirability in order to murder
