...entertaining, persuading and also by carrying a vague general function of culture to millions of people."(Frederick 18). In order for mass media to exist, there must be an audience. Today's society is very selective; each receiver reacts differently through his or her own experience and orientation according to mass media. Therefore, mass media exists in many different forms such as magazines, television, newspapers, internet, motion pictures, and even plays. Some examples of these forms of mass media are cosmopolitan magazine for young modern women and TSN television network for sports fans. With such extreme varieties of mass media existing in today's societies there are three major constraints that seem to have an impressionable impact. These constraints can keep mass media very restricted. The major constraint of mass media is competition. Each form of mass media wants to be the one to target the audience, so therefore competition between mass media is very strong, because capturing the inside of the sports world is critical. Apart from the competition among the various forms of media there is also competition among each form of the media example Fox network competes with all television networks for a market share of the audience. Network companies such as Fox buy the contracts to show American football games for millions of dollars, which they in turn make their money back through companies wanting to advertize on their network during these football games. The audience Fox...

...Austin Lawton 6/17/14 English 101 “Austin Lawton goes for the shot and hits. Oh no, he seems to be hurt. This is a horrific scene.” What if this is said? What if basketball isn’t there for me anymore? What will I fall back on? That is why I plan to get my degree in computer engineering. If basketball doesn’t work out, my fall back plan will be put to use using my degree. I’ve been around computers for as long as I can remember. My mom was a middle school principal so she was a little computer savvy. We had a computer and she used to put me on the internet and let me play games. When I got done playing the games I tended to roam around the computer. Not knowing that while I’m doing so it helped me get comfortable with a computer. I used to explore the settings, the internet, and almost any program my mom had on the computer. In elementary school I got enrolled in a summer program that was dealing with computers. We made PowerPoints, typed papers in Microsoft Word, and even searched the web. This is when I got interested in computers and felt like I knew everything I could about computers. Oh was I wrong, this was nothing but it was pretty impressive that a kid of my age was so advanced. My mom eventually got a new computer and needed help hooking it up. It was funny because she went to use the bathroom before we started. Me being impatient and curious, I wondered if I could hook it up by myself. So I tried and surprisingly I hooked the whole computer up before my mom could...

...Daniel Hemmings Mkt/435 Amber Topping 8-25-2014 Air Jordan Shoes Introduction The Nike Air Jordan Shoe line launched in 1985 and forever changed the course of athletic footwear. Focused primarily at first in basketball shoes, Nikes new golden child not only changed the design and comfort of the basketball shoes, but also the general dynamic and look of basketball shoes. Before the AIR JORDAN, all basketball shoes were white. This simple statement only begins to describe the sheer magnitude of the changes that were about to occur to the sport of basketball and to the athletic footwear industry once Michael Jordan entered the league. (Retrieved on 8-25-14 from: http://sneakernews.com/air-jordan-brand-jordan). A Little History As one can see form the statement above, the men hired to launch the ad campaign for Nike and the Air Jordan shoe line could have never imagine the empire that would be created with the tag line “Everybody wants to be like Mike”. Now one could argue that Michael Jordan becoming arguably the greatest basketball player of all time really established the Air Jordan shoe line, but ultimately it is because they forever changed the face of basketball shoes and turned them in to a fashion statement. Michael Jordan eventually bought out Nike and took sole ownership of the shoe line, however the line is still advertised through Nike, as a minority ownership group. One thing Nike and Michael Jordan have continued to do well, is understand their...

...always find a way to make the products better. Take their basketball shoe line for example. When Nike made their first pair of basketball shoes they probably had no idea what they were doing. Today Nike has one of the best lines of basketball shoes out there with the Air Jordan line. These shoes are always light weight and they feature great support and breathable leather which are both needed in a good basketball shoe. Also Nike makes their products stand out with their brilliant use of colors and unique designs. In 2009 Nike introduced the Nike+ products and teamed up with Apple. This allows runners to sink their shoes with their IPods and it will allow them to see how far they have run, how many calories they have burned and also keeps time for them. Nike has also done this with their basketball shoes which allow players to link up through their IPods again. However this new design helps measure a player's vertical, quickness, and other aspects of their game. Nikes products keep improving with the time and there is no end in sight to what Nike can do with their products. Nike has many competitors in their industry. These companies include but are not limited to Puma, Underarmor and Addidas. These competitors drive Nike to strive for new innovations every day. Nike competes with Addidas in the basketball market. Nike owns over 80% of U.S. basketball market to as where Addidas owns only about 14%. Nike and Underarmor are major competitors in the work out clothing industry but Nike...

...to believe in the coach. The team goes on to make the playoffs and eventually win states and be the Cinderella story, a small town school goes up against the big boys to win the Indiana state basketball championship, a David vs. Goliath story. I believe perseverance and desire, desire to not give up and that nothing is impossible is the intended message the movie is trying to get across. A coach persevering with the whole community and his players, and the players and coach having the desire to believe they can win and that they belong. The Major Characters The biggest character in the movie was played by Gene Hackman as Coach Norman Dale. Norm was an old college basketball coach who returned to coaching after twelve years to coach at a small High School in Indiana. The next major character was Myra Fleener, a fellow school teacher that looked after Jimmy and did not treat Norm very well at first. She eventually respects him and believes in the coach and they form a relationship. The third major character in the movie was Shooter, a drunk father to one of the players. Norm took him under his wing and built up his confidence and helped him to get sober. The fourth major character in this movie I felt was Jimmy Chipwood. Yeah, he didn’t say much throughout the movie, but he was a major theme in the movie and was seen throughout it. Jimmy was the star player who decided not...

...The gap in the rules and regulations of high school and college basketball is doing aspiring athletes a disservice. These athletes deserve standard regulations throughout their years of play. The three major differences are: game length, three point line, and the existence of the shot clock in college. In a high school basketball game there is four eight minute quarters adding to a thirty-two minute game. Each team receives five timeouts, three sixty second timeouts and two thirty-second timeouts. In a college game there is two twenty minute halves for a total of forty minutes. Each team has four seventy-five second timeouts and two thirty second timeouts. In college, there are also media timeouts which give coaches extra time to coach their teams without using one of their own timeouts. There is no such thing as a media timeout in high school basketball. The gap in the game length of high school and college is not adequately preparing prep players for the next level of play. The players are not used to such long of games when they reach the college level, therefore they are not in the best shape they could be. A high school season last about twenty-five games while a college season lasts about forty games. This aspect also is doing players a disservice because it is not preparing them adequately...

...Sports Career as a High School Basketball Coach As a part of this assignment, I chose to interview a friend of father’s who is a head basketball coach in my hometown. I was recently home for Spring Break and was able to meet with Ken Overton to discuss his career as a high school basketball coach and the years he spent as a teacher. I also was able to ask him many questions about how he chose this path and what steps are needed to realize this dream. I admit it is a little difficult to envision such a path at my age but it seems with a lot of hard work and education, I can see myself coaching basketball. I already love the sport and hope to make it a central focus of my future. While I already knew there is not a lot of money in high school coaching, I also feel this position is more about a calling than a salary. Interview Questions: 1. How long have you been a high school basketball coach? 2. What type of education do you need to become a high school basketball coach? 3. How many years of coaching before you become head coach? 4. What has been the most impressionable experience of your coaching career? 5. Do you think your coaching makes a difference? 6. How would you define the job satisfaction of coaching? 7. How do you feel about having to teach history in the classroom and also coach the team after school and in spare time? Why can’t it be a separate job position? 8. ...I chose to further examine the film Hoosiers from week 13 of class. After reviewing the film I will compare it with chapter 13 of Major Problems. Hoosiers really caught my interest as a great underdog story and that is why I chose to further study the 1986 classic. I always had heard people talk about this movie but I had never seen it. In this paper I will discuss the historical period Hoosiers is set in, compare and contrast major themes from the week, and evaluate the film based on its effectiveness. Hoosiers is a fictional movie that is actually based on real events in a small town in Indiana. It is based on a true story but does change some of the truths, as evidenced by the ESPN article. The message I gathered from the film was that anything is possible if you can work hard and accept change. The little town of Hickory was very set in its ways and uncooperative of the new basketball coach. Once the town and players learned to accept something different, the team flourished. The argument the film presents is to never count someone out. No matter how small a school or town is, hard work can trump talent and compete with the big boys. The message of acceptance resonates with the viewer and is most likely why Hoosiers is so highly regarded as a sports movie. The historical period that Hoosiers is set in is 1952 rural Indiana. In this time period, people are more centralized around common goals and the entire town knows when someone moves in. There are no...
