The YMCA is a well-known organization all throughout the United States. The YMCA was founded in 1844 by George Williams in London. Anyone who worked at the Y at the time was a volunteer. The mission was to bring the Christian faith into the lives of young men and bring the community together. The YMCA has since become an organization that represents the true qualities of leadership. The YMCA has built their legacy over 160 years. “Today, the Y engages more than 10,000 neighborhoods across the U.S. As the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to helping people and communities to learn, grow and thrive, our contributions are both far-reaching and intimate—from influencing our nation’s culture during times of profound social change to the individual support we provide an adult learning to read.” (YMCA) The YMCA is a much diversified organization that inspires individuals to be leaders through true characteristics. “The YMCA movement defined character as the demonstration of four core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.” (YMCA) Leadership is the process of aiding or influencing one another to accomplish a task. The Y portrays leadership in every aspect of their business. Today the Y is known for its physical fitness aspect in many areas. The Y leaders and founders wanted to inspire others to get involved and to learn the true meaning of team work. Developing these sports into Y’s all across America was not about winning. They wanted children of all ages to portray the characteristic of respect and responsibility through competition.
