Management Aptitude Analysis
Introduction
According to Daft, there are three skills that all managers must possess in order to perform effectively. These skills are: 1. Conceptual skills – the ability to see how a team fits as part of the organization and how the organization fits as part of its industry. They are especially important for top managers who have to think strategically and solve complex problems. 2. Human skills – the ability to relate to motivate, coach, lead, interact and understand other people. They are important for managers at all levels. 3. Technical skills – the ability to use the tools, methods, techniques, and specialized knowledge needed to perform a specific task. They are especially important for first line managers and individual contributors [ (Daft, 2012) ].
The self assessment helps identify how ready a person is to be a manager. This is very important because there are people who just lack the skills necessary to be a manager, but they can still work on learning them.
There is a lot we can learn from this exercise about ourselves and our readiness to be managers. If we find we are weak on a particular skill, then we can focus on becoming better by reading more about it, and taking courses.. This exercise can also help us realize that maybe we are better individual contributors than managers.
Results
I obtained the following results after completing the exercise: * Conceptual skills – 25 points * Human skills – 22 points * Technical – 9 points
I was not surprised about my technical skill score because I have never been a technical person. I have always struggled with the mechanical aspects of a job because I have always been a people person. I pride myself in knowing each of my direct reports really well to be able to lead them, motivate them, and recognize their potential to eventually lead

Management Aptitude

...The objective of this Management Aptitude Questionnaire was to identify your present level of management skills and to see what level of management would best suit your personality. You will learn the difference in the three categories of management skills and to identify the position that potential managers would likely be fit for. There are three levels of managers which are Top Managers, Middle Managers, and First-Line managers. All managers must have three necessary skills in order to be effective and efficient in and organization which are Conceptual skills, Human skills, and Technical skills. The top-level managers require more conceptual skills and less technical skills. The lower-level managers require more technical skills and less conceptual skills, and all managers require a high level of human skills in an organization because they all have to interact with people. “Many managers get promoted to their first management jobs by having excellent technical skills. However, technical skills become less important than human and conceptual skills as managers move up the hierarchy” (Daft, 2012, p.11). Human skill should be the most important in an organization to avoid a high employee turnover due to poor communication, coordination and motivation techniques.   Results The results were: Conceptual skills total score = 28 points Human skills total score = 22 points Technical skills total score = 15 points The results showed a higher total for conceptual skills...

Construct and Support an Argument

...Construct and Support an Argument Angela Miars University of Phoenix Management MGT 521 Russell Arenz III July 12, 2010 Construct and Support an Argument My decision to continue my education and pursue an MBA is to gain the required skills needed to start a new career in my near future. Pursuing an MBA will make it possible to live a better economic life and to have a good job with security and top pay. I have chosen this route even with the current economic situation, knowing that new jobs may not be available by the time I finish with my MBA. An MBA would benefit me greatly in a variety of ways. Pursuing an MBA will aid in the development of the skills I need in the finance and accounting areas. Of course the increase in pay from possessing an MBA does not hurt either. When researching jobs online I am finding that by having a master’s degree, the pay is substantially higher than those with a bachelor’s degree. Other than career and financial reasons, I do have a personal goal to achieve more than my siblings. Out of four sisters only two of us have a bachelor’s degree. I would love nothing more than to become the other sibling to obtain a masters degree. Plain and simple, I want to do better than all of my sisters. In this economy, having a good paying job with security is vital. “In nearly every sector of the globe, the prospect of making more money and living a better economic life draws thousands of students to MBA programs” (Euders.com, 2009)...

...able to identify skill and abilities, Values and attitudes, and have an open mind about Age and gender. Skills and knowledge are imperative considerations for a manager when choosing to hire a person. There are various tests to measure mental aptitudes and abilities. Some of these provide an overall intelligent quotient (IQ) score. Others provide measures of more specific competencies of people entering various educational programs or career field. Such tests are designed to facilitate the screening and selection of applicants for educational programs or jobs. Some jobs, such as firefighters and police, require tests for physical abilities. Muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance are two of many physical ability dimensions. For instance, one of the requirements for joining the military is that you have to take and pass the ASVAT exam. It is important to do your best because if you are just trying to pass the exam you may not like the kind of job that you will be doing while serving the Armed Forces. The better your score the better job and option on what you can do while in the service. Aptitude and Ability are important considerations for a manager when initially hiring or selecting candidates for a job. ...A job description identifies characteristics of the job to be performed in terms of the tasks, duties, and responsibilities to be fulfilled (Youssef, 2012) Companies use a job description to find new employees, review current employees and compensate them as well. Job descriptions are formed from the information gathered in a job analysis. A job analysis is a procedure used to identify the content of a job in terms of activities involved and attributes or job requirements needed to perform the activities. A typical job description has three main parts: identification, general summary, and a detailed list. The identification section of a job description includes the job title and department, the job location, job number and grade, as well as the employee’s exempt or nonexempt status. The second part or the general summary section provides a clear and concise statement that summarizes the particular job and differentiates it from others. Lastly, a detailed list should be included of all important functions, tasks, duties, assignments, commitments and responsibilities associated with the job. Tasks, tools and technology, knowledge, skills and abilities, and educational requirements are the main requirements listed in a job description. The tasks would be the required work for that particular job position. Tools and technology is what you would need to assist you in completing the required tasks. You might need to be familiar with certain equipment or even software such as the...

Introduction to Psychology

...Introduction to Psychological Testing Lady Scott PSY/475 July 10, 2013 Michelle Bailey Introduction to Psychological Testing The definition of testing according to the American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms by Christine Ammer (1997) “a set of standardized questions, problems, or tasks designed to elicit responses for use in measuring the traits, capacities, or achievements of an individual”. There are four major categories of testing, the first being mental ability test. “In the world of psychological testing, the term mental ability includes a wide variety of cognitive functions, such as memory, spatial visualization, and creative thinking” (Hogan, 2007). These tests are independently given to an individual to test their intelligence independently. These tests can also be given in a group setting, when done so it is to measure mental capacity overall in every day school topics. Test that are given to future college students fit under this category as well, being that is also test intelligence or possible level of attainment in school. The next category in testing is achievement test. “These tests attempt to assess a person’s level of knowledge or skill in a particular domain” (Hogan, 2007). Achievement testing is the most commonly used test, especially in grade school. Teachers use these in order to see if their students are learning the material being taught and to get a clear understanding of the student’s level of understanding of basic studies in several subjects...

...Aptitude From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search For the Debian software, see Aptitude (software). An aptitude is a component of a competency to do a certain kind of work at a certain level, which can also be considered "talent". Aptitudes may be physical or mental. Aptitude is not knowledge, understanding, learned or acquired abilities (skills) or attitude. The innate nature of aptitude is in contrast to achievement, which represents knowledge or ability that is gained.[1] Contents [hide] 1 Intelligence 2 Combined aptitude and knowledge tests 3 See also 4 References Intelligence[edit] Aptitude and intelligence quotient are related, and in some ways opposite views of human mental ability. Whereas intelligence quotient sees intelligence as being a single measurable characteristic affecting all mental ability, aptitude refers to one of many different characteristics which can be independent of each other, such as aptitude for military flight, air traffic control, or computer programming.[2] This is more similar to the theory of multiple intelligences. Concerning a single measurable characteristic affecting all mental ability, analysis of any group of intelligence test scores will nearly always show them to be highly correlated. The U.S. Department of Labor's General Learning Ability, for instance, is determined by combining Verbal, Numerical and Spatial aptitude subtests. In a given person some are low...

Personality

...True Identity Tony Bradford PSY/250 May 2, 2011 Douglas Butler It is safe to say that no two people are alike. Although we may have some comparable characteristics, overall, everyone is different. The reason why human beings are so dissimilar is because of their distinctive personalities. The mere fact that we all have different parents, life styles, family members, and different routine patterns that they have become accustomed to, seals the fact that we all will be unique in our own way. All of these combined, contributes to the foundation of one’s personality. I believe the personality of a person is the sum of a person’s physical, emotional, mental as well as their social characteristics. What makes people different? Why are some people more likable or more likely to be socially accepted by others? Why are people judged by the way that they act or appear to be rather than by what they have to offer? These are just a few questions that came to my mind when I overheard a group of teenagers talking about this kid that attempted suicide because he felt as if he was an outcast to his peers. This story made me realize that the personality of an individual can determine whether or not a person is capable of overcoming some of the cruel and insensitive barriers that are placed in his or her pathway by the people that he or she has to deal with on a day to day basis. There are many traits that I have adopted throughout my life which defines my personality. ...
