Maniac Magee by author Jerry Spinelli gives us a first person account of a homeless boy, Jeffrey, and how he learns to cope with prejudice and racism. Orphaned at age three when his parents die in a trolley accident, Jeffrey runs away from the unhappily married relatives he has been living with and is ultimatly able to help resolve long standing racial tensions between two towns.
Just as Jeffrey is willing to help resolve such powerful issues such as racism and homelessness, so are many organizations and non profits. Website like http://www.endhomelessness.org and http://nationalhomeless.org are fighting and building movements to hopefully put an end to homelessness.
