There are many things that can have an emotional impact on society. One of these things that has had an impact on people is social media. In a short essay this impact of social media on individuals’ lives is explained by, Maria Konnikova in “The Limits of Friendship”. Konnikova highlights how communication and relationships are changing drastically. Konnikova also states that our social circles are changing dramatically, while citing a well known British anthropologist named Robin Dunbar. Konnikova’s viewpoints are easily related to how social media can emotional impact people. In another piece of writing Bill Wasik’s, “My Crowd Experiment: The Mob Project” Wasik explains his experience with boredom and how it led to the creation of something new and powerful. Wasik describes the introduction of the flashmob to the world and the great social impact the flash mob has had. He also describes a phenomenon called the “bandwagon effect” and how it has influenced many people’s decisions in the world today. Social media has made it particularly easier to stay in touch with many people as well as feeling a sense of belonging. While bringing people together social media has also gave way to certain movements and trends that have been able to spread worldwide. With social media’s impact on the world today as such a driving force, there is little evidence that social media will be stopped anytime soon. I believe, that I the future social media will continue to be at the forefront of the world and will make people feel closer.
