Marin Shkreli and “America’s” Medical Insurances Problem
In 2015 the media went abuzz after Martin Shkreli, an “unrepeated capitalist’ who raised the price of Daraprim (Pyrimethamine) from $13.50 to $750 per pill.
Daraprim is used to treat toxoplasmosis and cystososporiasis, two diseases caused by a virus that surprisingly many of us have, but only a few are affected by. Those who need the medication have “compromised immune systems,” such as AIDS and cancer patients.
People feel that he made an egregious decision to raise a price like that, practically against a group of “sick and dying individuals.” This may be falls but people are saying that average prescription was hundreds of pills, and if so, that means a typical prescription outlay …show more content…
Instead what’s happening is everyone’s insurances premium is going to go up in price, assuming that people don’t pay for their own insurance and don’t get all or some through their employer and aren’t being covered under a government plan.
There are many issues with what Marin Shkreli did, but he primarily did it because there are few, if not any, supply competitors within the United States. He mostly likely knew it would take years for any competitors to get through the necessary FDA testing. It looks like the biggest problem is individuals and the government allows this, and that a lot of people have no, if not any, interest in changing
