...Omega Paw Incorporated Lucas Robertson Comm 1006 Austin Davey Executive Summary Omega Paw Inc. is facing a decision of how to grow their company in the future. Their president and inventor of their keynote product, the “Self Cleaning litter box”, Michael Ebert, knows that with the company’s success in the last year there is room for expansion. The company reached sales of $1 million last year by selling its products to pet stores across North America through manufacturer representatives, and now has a marketing budget of $100,000, which Mr. Ebert wants to use to grow the company. The current method of distribution has worked well for them, but Mr. Ebert wonders whether the company should expand its distribution into other markets. He knows that the company could revisit its old methods, a T.V. campaign in the U.S. and selling the products directly to its customers via mail order. The company would run a trial in the U.S. for two weeks and monitor the customer response, costing roughly $20,000. The cost comes from the producing of a T.V. commercial, a 1-800 number, and two companies to take the calls and collect the money. The company could also simply continue selling to pet stores through manufacturer representatives, and try to grow the number of distributors they have, which is currently over 60. They would achieve this growth by investing in advertisements in trade magazines for $3-4,000 per issue. The...

...Spencer Beck Dawn Kelsey COMM 200: Gateway to Communication Studies November 20, 13 Review of Literature: The Rhetoric of Harry Potter Every so often there are stories that take the world by storm and make such an impact that they become part of our everyday world. (Czubek et al. 442) Jk Rowling’s Potter book series is by far one of the most loved series by adults and children for over sixteen years. First published in 1997, the world has fallen in love with Harry Potter and the magical world that he saved from destruction several times over. For me, growing up and being forced to read was always a problem until my father bought me the first book and I have been hooked ever since. A proud owner of all the books in hardback, audio books and all the movies, some would say I’m a bit of a Harry Potter nerd. For me, Harry Potter has become an everyday part of my world. In this review of rhetoric, three main components will be examined. The will be the examination of identities. Secondly, an examination of the commodity culture in the Potter books. Lastly, Christian undertones will be looked at. Identity Harry spent 11 years of his life not knowing who he was or where he belonged. He thought he belonged to his horrible Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. Todd A. Czubek and Janey Greenwald have written an article that explains the parallels between Harry Potter and the Deaf world. Using a “deaf lens” we can gain insight into social arrangements in the...

...2.What are Branding Challenges and Opportunities? Savvy customers informed consumers expectations are 13% higher than supposed by manufacturer. It means they are very knowledgeable about the differences in price and quality between the various brands (considered). Brand proliferation increased number of other brands and brand extensions . Brand proliferation is when a firm puts out new brand names under the same product lines. For example, Huggies is a firm owned by Kimberley-Clark. Huggies is best known for producing disposable diapers, and has different product lines such as Pull-Ups and Little Swimmers. Media fragmentation traditional TV ads / increased role of internet . Various ways of research. The style of mass advertising campaigns of yesteryears does not hold too strong a ground. It has become too expensive to go national on the TV network with no specific plans for points of attack and reinforcement in relation to brand's potential in different areas. In other words, marketing people should concentrate on those areas, which offer better prospects of brand's growth.Under such circumstances, it has become challenging for brand managers to be practically aware of the media costs and the effects of fragmenting a TV campaign. Not only that, they also have to be able to plan an integrated communication campaign with various tools of communication at their hands. The managers have to capitalize on the factor of fragmentation and align their campaigns accordingly) Increased...

...Final Paper: COMM 202 Jessica Matzell University of Maryland University College 1442 words Herbie Hancock, an American pianist, keyboardist, bandleader and composer believes that for music to grow or become anything, the artist must experiment and try new things. Herbie Hancock's theories allow for the movement of jazz music from the traditional to a more progressive new form. He believes what makes history is what music reflects on. Music has made an impact on all levels in history. The early days of jazz provided many styles, which highlighted the talent and innovation of African American music including Ragtime and Dixieland. Ragtime also contributed to the movement of African Americans to march against racism. Dixieland was a form that made a mockery of how Caucasian people danced. Soul is the movement of power to African Americans, all of which reflected what was going on in history during that time. For traditional jazz to be played in the present time would have no meaning to the people playing it. For instance, a young jazz musician playing Charles Mingus' song "Fables of Faubus" (which was about the wrong doings of governor Faubus) would have no meaning to the musician because he/she never lived that era. As for new, recent music, the artist plays what he/she feels in respect to the present. For instance, Herbie Hancock's new album came out about a month ago called "Possibilities". This album was called his "all-star project" (Downbeat; Pg 38) because it...

...Gun Control in America Alicia Buford COMM 215 Instructor Bruce Massis May 20, 2013 Did you know that in the United States that there are almost as many firearms as there are citizens (Wadman, 2013)? Consequently, the second amendment of the constitution gives each American citizen “The Right to Bear Arms.” The right to bear these arms is a just that, a right but, along with that right comes responsibility. Since the days of the pioneers, firearms have been an element of the American tradition as defense and a means of hunting or activity. However, as we progress through the 21st century the use of guns has changed significantly. Some of the reasons for the change are the steady increase in crime and the battle for the right to have possession of hand guns. Due to the number of gun owners in America, one might think that we have a strong affection for guns and gun ownership rights. This could not be further from the truth. Americans views towards guns have shifted significantly. In a 1998 Harris Poll taken a year before Columbine, shows that almost 70 percent of Americans favor “stricter gun control” (Contexts, Fall, 2003). So what should we do about this? I believe that stricter gun control legislation should be the solution to much of the gun violence that is plaguing our nation. Restricting the right to bear arms, especially assault weapons should make our communities safer. Granted, many people in community all across this country own guns. A large...

...“This Time is Different: Comparing Al-Qaeda’s Unique Place in the History of Terrorism with the Freedom Fighters of the Irish Republican Army” Al Qaeda and the Irish Republican Army are two of the most complex and famous terrorist organizations in modern history. While both groups share some principles with one another, and undoubtedly have committed and continue to commit horrible acts, the world’s perception of each is undoubtedly different from the other. There is an apparent contradiction in Karl Heinzen’s famous quote: “If to kill is always a crime, then it is forbidden equally to all; if it is not a crime, then it is permitted equally to all.”[1] This difference in public perception is a result of several key tenets of each organization’s strategy and structure. The IRA fights to protect and support the liberties of the Irish people, while Al Qaeda relies upon the religious doctrine of a radical Islamic minority to carry out jihad against Western infidels. Al Qaeda, while claiming to represent the entire Muslim world, has never had a real home or a consistent base to draw upon; inversely, a large proportion of the Irish people are steadfast in their support for the cause. Al Qaeda’s indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians has resulted in a falling out with a large percentage of its former supporters. Finally, the IRA had a distinct, tangible, and realistic goal of expelling the British from Ireland, while Al Qaeda seeks to establish a new caliphate based...

Although, Robins has only held his position for 6 months, he has been successful. Robins has hired 15 new trainees, which will operate under, Operation Supervisor Monica Carrolls. Robins has scheduled an orientation for the new employees on June 15th. Robins would like all 15 of the new hires to be working by July. Background Robins has made the common mistake of creating a task saturating situation, coupled with procrastination. Robins now finds himself in a predicament, facing a deadline and rapid growth of unforeseen circumstances. It began when Carrolls advised him of all the requirements the new hires must complete prior to starting work; Robins pledged to Carrolls the process will be completed on time. Robins returned to work after Memorial Day and began his final inspections on all new hire files. To Robins surprise, several of the applications were not complete. ...*Mummion* None ??? Conclusion: As shown in the table above, Mummion has the closest properties to Sodium as it has no precipitate. This therefore, means that Mummion must contain Sodium but, looking at the graph we see that Potassium also has similar properties to Mummion, so it could contain Potassium too. Evaluation: Nothing went wrong during the experiment, no chemicals were spilt which gives us the results shown above. Although about 4g or a roughly a small spatula of Mummion was used, it could have been weighed out, which would add to the consistency of our final results. Cation Analysis – Flame Test Background: When a sample of salt is burned in a blue Bunsen flame, the flame will produce a distinctive colour unique to the ion. This is due to the electrons emitting radiation (light) as they change energy levels. [15] Can be used when testing for heavy metal contamination in former industrial sites (pers comm). Equipment: Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid (6M); Bunsen burner; Sodium Chloride (0.1M) Lithium Chloride Potassium Chloride (0.1M) Copper (II) Sulphate (0.1M) Calcium Chloride Strontium Chloride Barium Chloride (10%) Mummion; Method: First, a Bunsen burner with a tripod, heat proof mat and gauze is required to do this experiment. PPE such as a lab coat and goggles are needed to prevent accidental injury. Then, turn the Bunsen burner on and turn it about ¾ of the way open so that you can see the flame, but it is still burning a blue colour. Next, make sure that...
